Google Drive is cloud storage for files you upload or create, with tools to organize, find, and share them. A personal Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos; work and school accounts may have different storage and access rules. Your files are private by default, and you control whether others can access them through sharing permissions.
What is Google Drive?
Drive is a file space linked to your Google Account. You can upload files, create Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, put items in folders, search for them, and share selected files or folders with other people. The files are stored in the cloud, so you can access them from signed-in devices with an internet connection.

Sharing is permission-based: you choose who can open or work with a file. Google says Drive content is private unless you choose to share it. Its privacy guidance also says content is encrypted in transit and at rest, and that Drive content is processed for features such as search, spam filtering, and malware protection. Google says it does not use Drive content for advertising. These statements do not replace careful sharing choices, account security, or workplace policies. Google Drive Help: How Drive protects your privacy and keeps you in control.
How does Google Drive work?
- Sign in: Use a Google Account to open Drive.
- Add or create files: Upload files from a device or create Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Organize and find items: Use folders and Drive search to locate files.
- Share selectively: Choose people and permissions when you want others to access a file or folder.
- Access from other devices: Open Drive online or use Drive for desktop to work with files from a computer.
How much storage do I get?
Google says a personal Google Account has up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. The amount available to Drive is therefore not a separate 15 GB allowance: mail and photo content also use the shared quota. Work and school account storage can differ, so check your account details or ask your administrator rather than assuming the personal allowance applies. Do files shared with me use my storage space?
In ordinary cases, files someone shares with you count against the owner’s storage, not yours. The accounting can change if you make a copy, add your own files to someone else’s shared folder, or become the owner of files. What happens when storage is full?
Google warns that reaching the account storage limit can prevent Drive uploads or file creation, Gmail sending or receiving, and Google Photos backups. My Drive and shared drives: what is the difference?
My Drive is centered on an individual account: an individual owns its files. A shared drive is designed for work or school collaboration, and the team owns its files. Google Drive Help puts it this way: “Members of a shared drive share ownership of any files and folders.” If a person leaves, shared-drive files remain with the team, subject to the organization’s access and retention policies.

Drive for desktop: streaming or mirroring?
Drive for desktop offers two ways to keep Drive files available on a computer. Streaming minimizes local storage use; mirroring keeps full local copies and therefore uses computer disk space.
| Mode | Where full files live | Local disk use | Offline availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Primarily in the cloud; the computer uses storage for work and cached or recent files | Low in typical use | Make files available offline when needed |
| Mirroring | In the cloud and as full copies on the computer | Uses local disk space | Mirrored files are available offline |
Changes to streamed or mirrored files sync so they appear across devices. Shared drives can only be streamed in Drive for desktop. Choose streaming if saving computer space matters most; choose mirroring if you need full local copies and have enough disk capacity. Google documents offline viewing and editing for Docs, Sheets, and Slides; changes sync when the device reconnects. For computer files managed through Drive for desktop, streaming requires you to make needed files available offline, while mirrored files are stored locally.
