In a 2025 U.S. study, people clicked traditional search results less often on visits where an AI summary appeared; Google separately reported that its overall organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year. Those findings measure different things. Site owners should track AI-feature visibility, Search clicks and downstream outcomes separately, then assess their own pages and queries.
What the evidence says about clicks
Pew Research Center observed different click behavior depending on whether a Google results page included an AI-generated summary. Its figures describe actions in a defined panel and period, not a forecast for any particular website.

| Observed action | Visits with an AI summary | Visits without an AI summary |
|---|---|---|
| Clicked a traditional search result | 8% of visits, Pew Research Center study (2025) | 15% of visits, Pew Research Center study (2025) |
| Clicked a link in the AI summary | 1% of visits, Pew Research Center study (2025) | Not applicable: no AI summary appeared |
The study covered 900 U.S. adults who shared browsing data and 68,879 Google searches from March 1–31, 2025. Researchers collected the corresponding search results from April 7–17, 2025 to identify whether summaries appeared. Pew cautioned that results can change over time.
The 8% versus 15% comparison is about whether people clicked a traditional result on those observed visits. It does not mean a site should expect its organic traffic to fall by a fixed amount: the study does not predict an individual site’s results, and it measured visits with and without summaries rather than isolating a universal causal effect.
#1 Best Overall
Why Google’s account is not a contradiction
Google said on August 6, 2025 that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year,” and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s aggregate account of Search traffic, not an independent study or a site-level causal estimate. The post does not give enough detail to calculate the effect for a particular publisher.
Google also reported in 2026 that AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users. That company-reported reach figure indicates the feature’s scale; it is not a measurement of traffic lost or gained by websites.
Rank #2
The findings can coexist because their scope and measures differ. Pew observed users’ next actions in a defined U.S. sample over a particular month. Google’s statement describes aggregate click volume across Search year over year. Neither by itself tells a site owner what happened to a specific page, topic or query set.
Separate visibility, clicks and business outcomes
AI-feature impressions, clicks from Search and results after a visitor arrives are related, but they are not interchangeable metrics. A page can receive an impression without generating a visit; a visit, in turn, does not automatically represent an engaged session or a conversion.

- Visibility: Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows impressions for links shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can group results by page, country, date and device.
- Search clicks: Use Search Console’s Web search reporting to examine clicks and queries. Google includes appearances in AI features in this reporting, but these data do not establish the overall causal effect of AI Overviews on site visits.
- Outcomes: Use an analytics tool to follow landing-page sessions, time on site and conversions. Google specifically points to Analytics for measuring outcomes such as conversions and time spent.
Google said the Generative AI performance insights had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. The report’s impressions are visibility measures, not counts of visits, engagement or revenue. Google also cautions that the newest data can be preliminary and that chart and table totals may differ because of aggregation.
How to investigate a traffic change
Use a consistent comparison rather than treating every organic decline as proof that AI Overviews caused it. Search demand, seasonality, query mix and site changes can also move traffic.
- Verify the property in Search Console. Open the Generative AI performance report and review impressions by page, country, date and device.
- Choose comparable periods. Compare the same pages and query groups across periods with similar seasonal conditions where possible. Check whether the affected queries actually showed an Overview; the feature does not appear on every query.
- Look for where the change occurred. Separate results by landing page, geography, device and time. A change concentrated in certain queries or pages is more informative than a sitewide total alone.
- Connect search data to outcomes. In analytics, inspect landing-page sessions, engagement and conversions for the same pages and time windows. An impression change without a corresponding outcome change has a different business meaning from fewer visits or conversions.
- Account for other causes. Review shifts in query demand, seasonality and site changes before attributing a result to AI Overviews. Search Console supplies performance data, not a causal attribution feature.
What SEO work matters for AI Overviews
Google’s guidance is to follow the same Search fundamentals for AI features rather than pursue a separate set of ranking tricks. Google Search Central says, “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

Make useful pages accessible and understandable
- Ensure pages can be crawled and are eligible for indexing.
- Make important pages discoverable through clear internal links.
- Provide useful, clear text and a good page experience.
- Keep structured data accurate and consistent with content visitors can see on the page.
Google describes AI Overviews as using query fan-out across related searches. Covering relevant subtopics comprehensively can help address user needs, but no content structure guarantees that a page will be cited or shown.
Best Value
Give readers a reason to visit
Google recommends material with unique viewpoints and first-hand perspectives. For a publisher, the practical goal is to offer something more useful than a generic summary—such as original expertise, evidence, or reporting—so that a searcher has a reason to continue to the site. This is guidance, not a promise of additional traffic.
Do not mistake eligibility for inclusion
Indexing eligibility can make a page eligible to serve as a supporting link, but Google warns that meeting its requirements and best practices does not ensure crawling, indexing or serving. Nor does every query trigger an AI Overview. Treat appearance as an opportunity, not an entitlement or a dependable traffic channel.
Google’s documentation does not require special AI markup or additional technical requirements for AI Overviews. Claims that a particular “GEO hack,” an llms.txt file or AI-specific schema is necessary are not supported by that guidance.
How to judge claims about AI Overview impact
Before applying a published percentage to your own site, check what the number actually measures and who it represents.
- Measurement: Is it observed clicks, impressions, referrals, sessions or conversions?
- Population and geography: Does it describe a defined user sample or aggregate company data? Does it apply to your market?
- Time and rollout: When were the observations made, and could feature behavior have changed since?
- Query mix: Did the analysis distinguish searches where an Overview appeared from searches where it did not?
- Source: Is the figure an independent observation or a company’s aggregate report?
Pew’s study and Google’s statement answer different questions; Search Console adds a third kind of evidence by showing impressions for AI-feature links. Taken together, they show why observed click behavior, aggregate traffic claims and a site’s own outcomes should not be collapsed into one universal percentage.
