On Android, Gemini can interact with apps through several separate routes: connected services can provide information or perform supported actions, Android permissions govern device features such as the microphone and location, and an app-specific screen-automation permission lets Gemini read and operate an app’s visible interface. These controls are not interchangeable, and the details below describe Google Gemini—not every Android AI assistant.
How Gemini accesses and uses apps
Gemini’s app interaction is best understood as three distinct access paths. Each exposes different information and has a different control.

Google describes Connected Apps as integrations that let Gemini use supported apps and services to answer requests or take actions. Examples include searching or summarizing Gmail, making a calendar event, playing music through supported services such as YouTube Music or Spotify, finding photos in supported gallery apps, and calling or messaging through default apps or WhatsApp. Some users may also be able to ask Gemini to control devices through Google Home. Google says Gemini is hosted by the Google app on Android, so permissions for device capabilities are governed through that app’s Android permissions. A connection to an app or service is different from permission to use a phone feature, and both are different from permission to operate another app’s screen.

What screen automation can see and do
Screen automation is a separate, app-by-app permission for Gemini to read and interact with an app’s screen while carrying out a task. Google’s help documentation identifies the feature as beta. For each app, the available choices are Always allow, Ask every time, or Do not allow. The setting can be changed later. Availability may vary; consult Google’s help for multi-step tasks in Android apps for current instructions.
During a task, use View progress to inspect what Gemini is doing in its on-device virtual phone environment. You can tap Take control or stop the task. Google warns that automation can make mistakes or produce unexpected results, including purchases, and says users are responsible for its actions. Separately, Google’s security blog says purchase confirmation is designed into the flow; that is a statement about the product’s design, not a promise that mistakes are impossible. Google describes its broader approach as explicit user control, data protection, transparency, and safeguards against prompt injection in its May 12, 2026 security post.

What information may be involved
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says information handled by Gemini can include prompts and spoken requests; files, photos, and videos you upload; screen or page content you explicitly share; Gemini’s responses; information from Connected Apps and other Google services; device and app information; data made available through system permissions or mobile features; and interaction logs. This describes Google’s service. A connected third-party service processes information under its own terms and privacy policy. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice was last updated June 29, 2026.

Location is not controlled by one setting alone
Google says Gemini uses location to make responses more relevant. By default, this can be a general area inferred from your IP address or Home and Work addresses in your Google Account. With device permission, Gemini may process precise location; it may also receive precise location from another Google service even if precise location for the Google app is off. Google says permitted precise location from the device or browser is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity, and location stored with that activity is coarsened to a general area. However, location can still appear in a prompt or response saved in a chat.
What Gemini activity settings do—and do not—control
Gemini Apps Activity and its Keep Activity setting govern the storage and use of Gemini interactions in the circumstances Google describes; they are not universal switches for all Google services or device data. Google says you can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity, change its auto-delete period, and control whether data is used to improve Google AI. Its privacy notice also describes use of data to provide, maintain, improve, develop, and personalize services.

When Gemini and Assistant work together inside the Gemini mobile app, Google says the relevant record is Gemini Apps Activity if Keep Activity is on. When Google Assistant powers features or devices outside that app, activity is saved in Web & App Activity if that setting is on. Changing Gemini activity settings does not automatically change separate controls such as Web & App Activity or Location History.

There is a specific photo and video caveat: Google says photos or videos shared from a connected gallery or through a screen action or upload may be used to improve services with human reviewers if Keep Activity is on. Turning off or deleting an activity record should not be read as proof that information was never processed; check the privacy notice for the handling relevant to a particular feature.

What happens when Gemini is waiting for a voice request
Google says Assistant waits in standby for activation and does not send what you say while it is in standby. After it detects activation and Voice Match, it sends the request to Google’s servers. A sound that resembles the activation cue can trigger an unintended activation. Google says an unintended activation is stored and treated like a normal activation if Keep Activity is on; with it off, that interaction is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity, according to its Android Gemini mobile app help.
Review the controls that match what you want to restrict
- Disconnect services: Open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and disconnect any service you do not want Gemini to use. This governs service integrations, not Android device permissions.
- Review device access: Open Android Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions and adjust access to features such as the microphone, camera, contacts, or location. Names and navigation can differ by Android version or manufacturer.
- Limit screen interaction: Open Gemini’s screen-automation settings and set each listed app to Always allow, Ask every time, or Do not allow.
- Manage interaction history: Review Gemini Apps Activity and its Keep Activity and deletion options. Check Web & App Activity and other Google activity controls separately if you want to manage those records too.
For a personal Google Account on Android, Google says Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Device assistance remain available when Keep Activity is off, while other integrations such as Google Workspace are unavailable in that state. Work or school accounts have different guidance and limitations, so do not assume personal-account behavior applies to them.
Gemini and Google Assistant can still overlap
Gemini is Google’s current AI assistant experience on Android, but Google documents that Assistant may still power some familiar quick voice actions and that some Assistant features are not supported in Gemini. Which assistant handles a request can depend on the feature, account, language, and device. Activity may therefore fall under different settings depending on whether the action happens inside the Gemini mobile app or through Assistant elsewhere.
Google’s descriptions explain its intended product behavior and controls; they do not establish that all Android assistants work the same way. Other assistants may have different app integrations, permissions, and privacy policies.
