The device does not run a Gemini model locally: it connects to a network, authenticates the request, sends input as JSON, and parses the returned data. An ESP32 is one documented example of hardware with Wi-Fi and HTTPS support, but the same basic pattern applies to any board and framework capable of making verified HTTPS requests.
What happens during a Gemini API call?
Think of the microcontroller as an HTTPS client. The model runs on Google’s service; the board sends it a request and waits for a response. Google’s API reference says its REST APIs can be used from environments that support HTTP requests.
- Connect: Join Wi-Fi or another network that provides internet access.
- Build the request: Select a model and construct the API endpoint and JSON body.
- Authenticate and send: Include the API key in the request header and use HTTPS with server-certificate verification.
- Read the result: Check the HTTP status, receive the response body, parse its JSON, and use the parts the project needs.
This is a cloud round trip. It depends on network availability and the hosted API, not just on what the microcontroller can compute.
How a basic generateContent request is structured
Google documents generateContent as an HTTP POST to a model-specific REST endpoint:

POST https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/models/{model}:generateContent
Replace {model} with the model name currently appropriate for your use case. The model is part of the URL path. A simple text request uses a JSON body with a contents field and a parts array containing the text. The request includes Content-Type: application/json and authenticates with the x-goog-api-key header. See Google’s generateContent API reference for the current request and response formats.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
At a high level, the JSON body has this shape:
{
"contents": [
{
"parts": [
{ "text": "Your prompt goes here" }
]
}
]
}
This illustrates the body structure only; it is not a complete firmware example. The API returns a response object, which firmware must read and parse rather than treating the network call as a plain text print operation.
Is generateContent the right API for a new project?
It is a clear way to understand a request-and-response exchange, and Google describes it as returning the complete response in one package. However, Google’s current API reference recommends the Interactions API as its standard primitive, oriented toward agentic workflows, server-side state, and complex multimodal or multi-turn work. The Gemini API quickstart calls generateContent legacy and recommends Interactions for new projects.

- High-performance dual-core processor – ESP32S is equipped with a powerful dual-core 32-bit CPU with a main frequency of up to 240MHz, providing smooth and efficient computing power for IoT and embedded applications.
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth dual-mode support – Integrated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and low-power Bluetooth, supporting wireless data transmission, remote control and smart device connection.
- Rich interfaces and functions – Provides GPIO, UART, SPI, I2C and other interfaces, supports touch sensing, infrared remote control, DAC and other functions, suitable for a variety of electronic projects.
- Low-power design – With multiple power saving modes, supports deep sleep and ultra-low power operation, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices and remote monitoring systems.
- Compatible with multiple development environments – Supports for Arduino IDE, for ESP-IDF, for MicroPython and for PlatformIO, easy to develop, suitable for beginners and advanced developers to quickly build smart applications.
Choose based on the task, and check Google’s live documentation for the currently recommended endpoint, model name, and API status before implementation. The REST request pattern remains useful to explain the mechanics, but it should not be mistaken for Google’s preferred choice for every new build.
What the board and firmware need
The ESP32 is a grounded example, not a guarantee that every board or firmware configuration can make a particular request. Arduino-ESP32 documents station mode for connecting to a Wi-Fi network for internet access. Espressif’s ESP-IDF HTTP client supports HTTPS; its documentation describes mbedTLS support and certificate verification using a PEM certificate or the ESP x509 certificate bundle. See the ESP HTTP Client documentation and Arduino-ESP32 Wi-Fi documentation.

For a real board and framework, confirm these practical requirements:
- Reliable internet access and compatible Wi-Fi or other network hardware.
- An HTTPS client configured to verify the server certificate. Do not disable verification as a shortcut.
- Enough available RAM for TLS buffers, JSON serialization, and response parsing for the payload you send.
- Handling for timeouts, lost connectivity, HTTP/API errors, and response size.
The cited documentation establishes ESP32 network and HTTPS capabilities; it does not establish universal memory requirements, a board-specific payload ceiling, or that a particular board has been tested with Gemini. Those depend on the board, framework, configuration, model, and request.

Where should the Gemini API key go?
Google says, “Treat your Gemini API key like a password.” Its key guidance says not to check keys into source control or expose them in production client-side code, because compiled code can be extracted, and recommends a backend proxy for client-side applications. Applying that advice to inspectable microcontroller firmware is a practical inference: a key stored in a device shipped to users should not be considered secret.
For a prototype kept under your control, a developer may decide to store a key in firmware, but it can be extracted and abused against the project’s quota or billing. Do not put a production credential in a public example repository. For a product or device delivered to others, a safer pattern is:
Device → your authenticated backend → Gemini API
Keep the Gemini credential on the backend. Depending on the product, the backend can authenticate devices, apply request limits, control logging, and revoke access centrally. These are design options for your service, not requirements imposed by Google. Review Google’s Gemini API key guidance for current key restrictions and billing-alert advice.

API key changes to verify before deployment
Google’s key documentation describes a move to authorization keys and a September 2026 deadline for standard-key acceptance. That date has passed as of October 4, 2026, but the documentation alone does not establish whether a particular project or key is currently affected. Check the live key documentation and the status of your project’s credentials before following migration steps or deploying; do not assume an older key will continue to work.
Quick Recap
What to check when a call fails
- Connection: Confirm the device joined the network and can reach the internet.
- TLS: Check that HTTPS certificate verification is configured with the certificate or bundle required by the chosen stack.
- Request: Confirm the endpoint, model name, JSON structure, content type, and authentication header match the current API documentation.
- Response: Inspect the HTTP status and response body, and handle API errors rather than assuming every response contains generated text.
- Resources: Account for timeouts, memory available for TLS and JSON, and the size of the actual request and response on the chosen board.
