To play a game you already own, connect the account that holds the game, check that the exact title and store edition are supported in your region, then launch it and verify ownership when prompted. Owning a game does not by itself make it playable on GeForce NOW: the title must also be in the service’s catalog.
What happens when you play a game you own?
GeForce NOW does not install and run the game on your local computer, phone, tablet, or TV. Instead, it starts a remote PC game session on NVIDIA’s cloud hardware and streams the resulting picture and sound to your device. Your device sends your controls back to that session. It acts as the screen and input endpoint, while the game runs remotely.

This is why a game in your Steam, Epic Games Store, or other PC library is not automatically available to launch. The game must be supported by GeForce NOW, and the storefront version in your account must match the version the service supports. NVIDIA verifies ownership through the relevant store or publisher account when you launch a game. Its FAQ states that users need to own or purchase a game from a supported store before playing, while also including free-to-play games in the service’s catalog. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ explains the ownership requirement.

Check whether the exact game will work
Before changing account settings or choosing a membership, search the GeForce NOW supported-games catalog. Search for the title and check the store or edition listed. A game with the same name may have different PC storefront editions; support for one does not establish support for all of them.
- Catalog listing: Is the game listed as supported, and does the listing correspond to the store edition you own?
- Region: Is the title available where you live? NVIDIA says availability may differ by country because of local content-rating restrictions.
- Play method: Is it Ready-to-Play or an eligible Install-to-Play Steam title? The distinction affects setup and storage.
- Account: Can you connect and sign in to the account that owns the supported edition?
- Device: Does your computer, phone, tablet, TV, or other device support GeForce NOW and the features you need? NVIDIA supports several device types, but compatibility can vary.
NVIDIA currently markets GeForce NOW as supporting more than 4,500 games. Its European games page also advertises access to 2,200+ Install-to-Play titles for Premium members. These are NVIDIA’s published catalog claims, not independently audited counts; they do not mean every listed game is owned by you, available in every country, or available through every store edition. The catalog listing for your title and region is the practical check. See NVIDIA’s European service page and European games page for those claims.
Connect the account that owns the game
NVIDIA lists Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, Epic Games Store, Steam, and Xbox among the connected stores or accounts. Its current pages also describe linking libraries and subscriptions such as PC Game Pass in some regions. Available connections and library-sync features can change, so use the current GeForce NOW app and FAQ for the options shown to your account. Linking a library is a convenience for finding eligible games; it does not make every game in that library compatible.

For Steam library syncing, NVIDIA’s release highlights say the Steam profile must be public. They also say a newly purchased game may require you to press Sync again before it appears in the synced library. The same release page describes Ubisoft library syncing for supported Ubisoft games bought directly from Ubisoft or through Epic Games Store. The release highlights cover features from different app versions, so button names and placement may vary. If an option is not where an older instruction says it should be, check the current app interface and NVIDIA’s release highlights rather than assuming your game is unsupported.
Play a supported game you already own
NVIDIA’s documented process is straightforward. You can use the GeForce NOW app or its browser experience, but the exact screen labels may vary between devices and app versions. Follow the prompts displayed in your own client.
- Choose a membership. Open NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW how-to page for the current membership options and requirements. Membership terms and prices can change, so check the current page for your location rather than relying on an old price.
- Open GeForce NOW. Start the app on a supported device or open the browser experience.
- Connect your store or publisher account. Choose the account that holds the game and follow the sign-in and authorization prompts. Use the same account that owns the PC edition you intend to play.
- Find the game. Search the GeForce NOW catalog. Confirm the listed storefront edition and play method instead of relying only on the fact that the title appears in your personal library.
- Launch the game tile. GeForce NOW starts a cloud session. When the store or publisher sign-in appears, log in and allow it to verify the game license. The service may ask you to connect or authenticate an account again even if you have already browsed a synced library.
- Play in the stream. The game runs remotely and its display is streamed to your device. Use the device’s controls or a supported gamepad.
For a free-to-play title, you still need to find a supported listing and complete any account sign-in the game requires, but you do not need to buy the game first. For a paid title, GeForce NOW membership and game ownership are separate: a membership provides access to the streaming service, while the game license comes from the supported store. NVIDIA membership gift cards apply to GeForce NOW memberships; games are purchased from supported stores. See its membership gift-card page for the scope of those cards.

Ready-to-Play and Install-to-Play are different
GeForce NOW has two routes for supported games. The catalog or game tile indicates which applies. This distinction answers a common question: seeing a title in a Steam library does not necessarily mean it is already prepared to launch in the cloud.
Ready-to-Play
NVIDIA keeps Ready-to-Play games up to date and available to stream without requiring you to install them yourself. NVIDIA manages that backend preparation, making this the simpler path for an owned, supported title. You select the game and proceed through the store ownership check.
Install-to-Play
Install-to-Play is a Premium feature for eligible additional Steam games whose publishers have opted into Steam Cloud Gaming. Eligibility is limited; it is not a promise that every Steam game you own can be installed in GeForce NOW. If the catalog identifies an eligible title as Install-to-Play, you begin its installation inside the cloud session rather than expecting it to be preinstalled.

NVIDIA’s FAQ describes Premium memberships as including 100 GB of single-session storage. That storage can mean downloading the game again in a later session. Optional persistent storage can keep installations between sessions. For a game without Steam Cloud saves, persistent storage may also be needed to preserve progress. These are feature and storage terms, not universal guarantees about every game’s saves or settings. Check the current GeForce NOW FAQ for the latest eligibility and storage details before relying on a particular setup.
| Route | What you do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-to-Play | Select the supported title and verify ownership when prompted. | Exact store edition and regional catalog availability. |
| Install-to-Play | For an eligible Steam title, start the installation in the cloud session. | Premium eligibility, publisher participation, session storage, and whether persistent storage is needed for installation or save continuity. |
What you need on your device
Because the game runs remotely, your device does not need to install the PC game locally as it would for ordinary PC play. It does need to be one of the devices and configurations supported by GeForce NOW. NVIDIA lists computers, phones, tablets, TVs, and other platforms, but device compatibility and features differ. Check the current requirements for your specific device in NVIDIA’s FAQ; support for one device type does not establish that every model or feature works.

A gamepad is optional, not a general requirement. NVIDIA says gamepads are supported, including SHIELD controllers and third-party Bluetooth or USB-wired controllers on newer SHIELD models. If you want a controller, check compatibility with both your device and the game before buying or pairing one. Touch, keyboard, mouse, or built-in controls may suit some device-and-game combinations better; the supported input options depend on the setup.

If a game you own will not launch
Start by separating three different issues: catalog support, account ownership, and the way the game is delivered in the cloud. A connected library only helps identify eligible titles; it is not proof that a particular game edition can launch.
- The game is missing from GeForce NOW search: Search the supported-games catalog by title and inspect the listed store edition. If it is absent, owning it elsewhere does not add it to the catalog. Also consider that availability can differ by country.
- The game appears, but the store says you do not own it: Confirm that you signed into the correct store account and that it owns the PC edition listed for GeForce NOW. A console license, a different PC storefront purchase, or another account should not be assumed to satisfy that check.
- A recently purchased Steam game is not in the synced library: NVIDIA’s release notes say newly purchased titles may require another library sync. If Steam library sync is used, check that the Steam account meets NVIDIA’s public-profile requirement.
- The game is Install-to-Play rather than immediately launchable: Check that the title is an eligible Steam game and that the relevant Premium feature is available to your membership. Begin the installation in the cloud session and account for the possibility of downloading again in a later session.
- Progress or the installation does not persist: Check whether the game supports Steam Cloud saves. NVIDIA says persistent storage may be needed to retain Install-to-Play installations between sessions and may also be needed to preserve progress for games without Steam Cloud saves.
- The app or account-link option does not match an older guide: Interface labels and features change over time. Review the current FAQ and release highlights, then follow the prompts in your app version.
If the listing, account, and play method all appear correct but the launch still fails, consult NVIDIA’s current FAQ or support information for the error and device you are using. The supplied official pages establish the general ownership and catalog process, but they do not provide a universal fix for every game-specific sign-in or launch error.
How to decide whether GeForce NOW fits your library
It is a good fit for a particular game when the store edition you own appears in the catalog for your region, your account can verify ownership, and the required play method works for your membership and storage needs. If you are checking several titles, evaluate each one separately: games from the same publisher or store can have different catalog status, and an account connection is not a blanket compatibility guarantee.
If you do not own the supported PC edition, GeForce NOW does not supply it just because the game is listed. Purchase it through a supported store only after confirming the correct edition appears in the catalog. If you are considering Install-to-Play, also weigh the initial cloud installation, session storage, possible repeat downloads, and save continuity. NVIDIA’s how-to page and FAQ are the sources to check for changing membership, feature, and storage terms.
