It does not transfer a purchase to another account, and it does not make every subscription benefit or in-game item shareable. PlayStation uses Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5 and Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 on PS4; Xbox uses a Home Xbox setting. The rules for offline play, subscriptions and playing the same game on two consoles differ.
What game sharing does—and what it does not do
Digital purchases are associated with the purchasing account. A console-sharing setting lets other users on a designated console access certain content under the platform’s license rules; it does not give those users ownership of the purchase on their own accounts. If the setting is removed, an account loses access, a subscription ends, or a particular item is excluded from sharing, access can change accordingly.

In practical terms, the account that owns the game configures a console for other household users. They sign in with their own profiles on that console and can use eligible games without turning the arrangement into a transfer of ownership. Access can still depend on the title’s license, whether it has been downloaded, the subscription’s status, internet access, and which account is signed in.
These instructions concern PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. They do not describe Windows PC sharing policies, which are separate from Xbox console rules.

PlayStation: PS5 sharing and PS4 primary activation are separate
PlayStation does not use one identical setting across both generations. On PS5, the setting is called Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, the account activates a console as its primary PS4. For an account, sharing can be enabled on one PS5 at a time, and the account can also have one primary PS4 for the selected PlayStation Plus benefits described by PlayStation.
Set up Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5
- On the PS5 you want other users to use, sign in with the PlayStation account that owns the digital games or media.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable.
- Other users on that PS5 can then play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games and use eligible media. PlayStation says this access works even when the console is offline.
PlayStation’s support guidance says, “You can turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 console at a time.” If it is already enabled on another PS5, disable it there before enabling it on the new one. If you cannot access the old console, PlayStation provides remote deactivation as an alternative; deactivating a console remotely can affect access on that device, so use it when you intend to move the setting rather than as a routine sign-out.

Set up a primary PS4
- On the PS4 to share, sign in with the account whose games or PlayStation Plus benefits are involved.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Choose Activate and follow the console’s prompts.
Primary PS4 activation is not the name of the PS5 feature. PlayStation describes selected Plus benefits as shareable on one primary PS4 and on one PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. That allowance is tied to the account’s configured consoles; it is not a way to extend the arrangement to any friend’s console.

PlayStation Plus sharing is selective. PlayStation’s support guidance identifies benefits that can be used by other accounts on the configured console and benefits that remain tied to the member account. The fact that a game or feature is associated with Plus does not, by itself, establish that it is shared.

For catalog or Monthly games, distinguish the ability to launch a title through the member’s entitlement from owning it outright. If the entitlement ends or a game leaves an applicable catalog, access may no longer be available. A discount is also different from sharing: another user may play an eligible downloaded game on the configured console, but does not inherit the member’s discounted purchasing rights.
Xbox: designate a Home Xbox
Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles use the Home Xbox designation. Set it on the console where other household accounts should have access. Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox. On the designated console, other accounts can use eligible digital games, durable add-ons and content enabled through a subscription without the purchaser remaining signed in.

Set up Home Xbox
- Sign in on the Xbox console you want to designate using the account that bought the games or has the relevant subscription.
- Open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Choose the option to make that console your Home Xbox and confirm the prompt.
- Other accounts using that console can access eligible shared content under the applicable license and subscription rules.
Microsoft allows an account to change its Home Xbox up to five times in a rolling one-year period. Because changes are limited, choose the household console deliberately rather than switching the designation whenever someone temporarily uses another device.
Durable add-ons share; consumables do not
Xbox Home Xbox access covers eligible digital games and durable add-ons, as well as content made available through a subscription. It does not share consumable add-ons such as in-game currency or limited-use items. Microsoft states, “Ownership of consumable add-ons is entirely per account and isn’t shared.” A game may therefore be available to another household account while its purchased currency, single-use content, or other account-bound items are not.

On Xbox, the documented Home-and-roaming arrangement can let one user play on the Home Xbox while the purchaser uses another console, subject to Microsoft’s one-console-at-a-time rule for the same game. The purchaser signs in on the second, or roaming, console and must remain connected for roaming use. Other users’ roaming access on that device depends on the purchaser being signed in; Microsoft says their roaming licenses become invalid when the purchaser signs out. The Home Xbox, by contrast, carries the shared licenses for its other users.
This is not the same as giving the purchaser’s login to another person. Each person should use their own account, with the purchaser’s account used to configure the Home Xbox and to access the purchaser’s library on the roaming console. The rule is about the same game’s use across consoles, so do not assume that sharing creates unlimited concurrent play or that every title and license behaves identically.
For PlayStation, the cited sharing guidance establishes which users can access purchased and downloaded content on the configured console, including offline access on PS5. It does not establish a general simultaneous-play guarantee for the owner and another user on separate consoles. If two people need to play the same title at once, check the game’s own license and the current PlayStation account and console behavior rather than treating the sharing setting as a second copy.

Common problems and what to check
A game is missing or shows a lock
- Confirm the account that bought the game is the account that enabled the console-sharing setting.
- Check that the content was purchased digitally on that account and downloaded where required. A physical disc is not a digital license shared through these settings.
- On PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the console in use. On PS4, verify the purchasing account activated that PS4 as its primary console.
- On Xbox, confirm the console is designated as the purchaser’s Home Xbox. If using a roaming Xbox, sign in with the purchaser’s account and maintain the required connection.
- Check whether the game depends on an active subscription, is part of a catalog with eligibility conditions, or has a title-specific restriction.
The other user can play, but cannot use a feature or item
Check the type of entitlement rather than assuming all content attached to a game is shared. PlayStation Plus online storage, member discounts, claiming games on another account, automatic patch downloads and early access to time-limited trials are not among the shareable benefits listed by PlayStation. On Xbox, consumable add-ons are per account even when the base game or a durable add-on is accessible to other Home Xbox users.
Sharing stopped after changing consoles
On PS5, an account can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on only one PS5 at a time, so deactivate the old console or remotely deactivate it before enabling a replacement. On Xbox, account for the five-change rolling annual limit before changing Home Xbox; a change may not be available when needed if the allowance has already been used.
