It avoids growing intact cells during the protein-making step, but it is a specialized biotechnology workflow—not a consumer-ready way to manufacture molecules. Researchers have demonstrated selected proteins in laboratory systems; that does not establish routine commercial production or approved medicine supply.
What “freeze-dried cell parts” means
The closest technical term is cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS). Rather than relying on actively growing, intact cells to make a protein, CFPS uses a cellular extract containing the machinery needed for protein production, combined with other reaction components. Lyophilization—freeze-drying—stores extracts and reaction ingredients in a dry state for later use. A 2014 study of lyophilized E. coli-based systems explored this approach for storage and later synthesis.

The dried material is not a complete manufacturing process on its own. The user still needs an appropriate template and reaction formulation, suitable handling and rehydration, and a way to assess the resulting protein. For some targets, making the protein is only part of the challenge: the product must also have the required structure and modifications.
How the workflow makes a protein
Prepare the extract and reaction
A representative bacterial cell-free glycoprotein protocol begins with constructing and culturing a bacterial chassis, then producing a cell lysate. The lysate supplies cellular machinery; the reaction is assembled with the ingredients needed for synthesis and the target instructions. In the reported protocol, researchers assemble and freeze-dry reactions before using them for cell-free glycoprotein synthesis. The 2023 Nature Protocols article describes the workflow.

Rehydrate, synthesize, and characterize
When the dried reaction is used, it is rehydrated and allowed to produce the target protein under the selected conditions. Researchers then characterize the product to determine what was made and whether it meets the intended specifications. The published protocol says its described research workflow can be completed in one week or less; that is a laboratory-protocol duration, not evidence that commercial manufacturing takes a week.
Why freeze-dry a cell-free reaction?
One motivation is to reduce reliance on bulky frozen aqueous storage and make protein synthesis more portable or distributed. Researchers have also investigated lyophilization as a way to remove contaminating bacteria while retaining protein-synthesis capability. Neither goal guarantees a particular storage life or operating range: stability and performance depend on the formulation and process. A 2015 study examined a completely cell-free system, while a later study explored lyoprotectants for on-demand therapeutic production.

- (Adjustable timer & temp) This commercial food dryer has a control panel with which you can choose the most optimal time and temperature for your ingredients. You can set the time between 0 and 24 hours and the temperature can be adjusted between 30 and 90 ° C.
- (Freezer dryer with 10 layers) This food dryer has ten stainless steel trays of food quality 304 and 30*28 cm each. Each layer can contain up to 775 grams of food, so that you can dry different types of fruit and vegetables at the same time.
- (360 ° hot air freezer) The dried machine for dried beef has a drying fan mounted on the back and 360 ° air circulation technology, which helps to dry your food evenly. The machine does this without centrifuging and retains the original taste of your favorite food.
- (Specially selected material) Our Jerky drying machine is made of stainless steel of food quality. The drawer is dishwasher resistant. The machine also has a built-in LED lamp, so that you can easily keep an eye on your food while drying. The door has a switch with magnetic induction.
- (Keep your food) Dry freezer with a built -in motor on the back and an internal fan.Prepare completely natural dried foods and snacks. This stainless steel food dryer is perfect for making dried meat, dried fruit, fruit bars, yogurt, vegetables, nuts and even bread.
Freeze-drying changes how a reaction can be stored and deployed; it does not remove the need for specialized preparation, target-specific formulation, or quality checks. Results from one formulation should not be treated as a performance promise for another.
Which proteins have researchers made?
The 2023 glycoprotein protocol reports synthesis of model sfGFP and target proteins including CRM197, protein D, and human erythropoietin. A separate 2019 paper describes crisantaspase expression in a single-pot, endotoxin-free lyophilized cell-free system. These are experimental demonstrations. They do not establish regulatory approval, routine clinical supply, or commercial production by these methods. The indexed record for the glycoprotein work and the record for the crisantaspase-related study describe those research contexts.

What the cost evidence does—and does not—show
In a 2022 paper, the authors of “Constructing Cell-Free Expression Systems for Low-Cost Access” reported that their desiccated extracts were 203–424 times cheaper than the commercial versions used for their comparison. That figure applies to the study’s specific extracts and comparison, not to all cell-free systems or to the total cost of manufacturing a finished protein. The paper describes the study-specific approach.
There is no defensible broad industry-wide cost, market-size, or production-yield figure established for freeze-dried cell-free manufacturing. A cost comparison for extracts alone should not be mistaken for a cost estimate covering facilities, labor, scale-up, purification, testing, or regulatory requirements.

How to judge a reported system
Results are meaningful only in the context of the target and conditions. When comparing published systems, look for:
Recommended Free Tools
- Extract and composition: the source of the cellular extract and what the reaction contains.
- Target and product requirements: the protein being made and whether it needs particular post-translational modifications, such as those relevant to glycoproteins.
- Dried formulation and storage: how the reaction was prepared and the stated storage conditions, rather than assuming a universal shelf life.
- Workflow burden: whether the report includes chassis preparation, lysate production, reaction assembly, synthesis, and product characterization.
- Cost basis: what was compared and under what study conditions; a reagent-level comparison is not a manufacturing-cost figure.
Without comparable targets, formulations, storage conditions, and cost methods, ranking systems as though they were tested side by side would be misleading.
Is it ready for commercial or medical production?
The cited work establishes research demonstrations and a specialized protocol, not general commercial readiness. A laboratory result does not by itself show that a process can be scaled reliably, meet product-quality requirements, or supply an approved medicine. Freeze-dried CFPS is best understood as a research and technology-development approach with potential advantages in storage and deployment, whose usefulness depends on the specific protein and process.
