Free image compression can mean a browser tool with limits on each upload, or a hosted image service that meters a production workflow. Those offers are not directly comparable: one may cap a batch while the other counts image transformations, storage, and delivery against a shared allowance.
What “free image compression” can include
A browser compressor typically puts its boundary at the task: how many files you can upload together, how large each file may be, or which conversions are available. A hosted image platform can cover a longer chain: generating image variants, retaining files, and delivering them to site visitors. Its free plan may therefore measure several kinds of usage rather than just uploads.

| What to compare | TinyPNG web tool | Cloudinary Free plan |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Browser-based image compression and conversion. | Hosted image and video API for transformations, storage, and delivery. |
| Published free allowance | Up to 20 images in one batch, 5 MB maximum per image, and up to three image conversions. TinyPNG FAQ, checked October 7, 2026: official FAQ. | 25 monthly credits for transformations, storage, and bandwidth. Cloudinary billing documentation, updated July 21, 2026: official billing documentation. |
| What is metered | Batch size, file size, and conversion allowance. | A shared credit pool: one credit represents 1,000 transformations or 1 GB of storage or image bandwidth. These categories draw from the same allowance. |
| Storage and delivery | The cited web-tool limits do not describe a hosted storage or delivery allowance. | Storage and image bandwidth are included in the credit model. Cloudinary also describes its broader service bundle in its pricing information. |

#1 Best Overall
- ✔️ AI Upscaling up to 8K: Enlarge small, low-resolution, or old photos with crisp details, clean edges, and fewer artifacts — perfect for prints, social media, blogs, and online galleries.
- ✔️ Fix blurry or noisy photos: AI restores clarity by enhancing textures, sharpening faces, hair, and fine details while reducing noise and JPEG compression errors.
- ✔️ Ideal for family photos, scans & mobile images: Improve pictures from smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, scanners, and old archives with professional-quality results.
- ✔️ Fast & easy 1-click enhancement: Batch-process multiple photos at once and improve image quality instantly — no editing experience required.
- ✔️ Reliable results & broad file support: Works with JPG, PNG, TIFF and more — stable AI processing even on old, compressed or damaged photos.
How Cloudinary’s shared credits are counted
Cloudinary defines one credit as 1,000 transformations, 1 GB of storage, or 1 GB of image bandwidth. These are equivalent measures for the credit system, not separate free allowances: transformations, stored assets, and delivered image data all contribute to usage.
Transformations
A transformation counts when Cloudinary creates a derivative that has not existed before. Repeated requests for the same transformation URL do not count again once that derivative is cached. URL-driven optimization features that create a new size, crop, format, or quality variant can therefore affect transformation usage.
Rank #2
Storage
Storage is a snapshot of what is held at the time it is measured. Cloudinary says it includes originals, cached derived assets, and backed-up revisions—not just the original image files.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is based on the sizes of assets successfully delivered. For free plans, Cloudinary measures transformations and bandwidth over a rolling 30-day window, while storage reflects the current moment. That difference matters: storage is a present footprint, while the other two measures track activity over time.
Rank #3
What a solo developer should compare
Start with the shape of your work, not the word “free.” A one-off batch of images has different requirements from a site that generates variants and serves them continuously.
- Workflow pattern: Is compression occasional and manual, or part of an upload and delivery pipeline running in production?
- Transformation demand: How many distinct sizes, crops, formats, or quality variants will you create? Reusing an existing derivative differs from generating a new one under Cloudinary’s documented counting rules.
- Stored footprint: For a hosted service, account for originals, generated files, and backups where those are included in the storage measure.
- Delivery volume: Estimate how much image data your visitors will receive, not only how many images you upload.
- Browser-tool boundaries: Check batch limits, maximum file size, conversion options, supported formats, and metadata behavior. TinyPNG says its web tool removes unnecessary metadata, which may affect displayed DPI or color profile; its developer API offers options to preserve selected metadata. See the TinyPNG FAQ.
- What happens at the limit: Find out whether the service warns you, pauses a feature, requests an upgrade, bills overages, or restricts the account. Cloudinary says it sends warnings as usage approaches plan limits and repeated upgrade notices after usage exceeds the allocation; its billing documentation also describes eventual account disabling if no action follows multiple notifications.
- What the service bundles: Cloudinary lists management, processing, storage and I/O, bandwidth and requests, CDN delivery, and service-layer components such as APIs, SDKs, console, support, and availability. Compare the components you actually need; the vendor’s assertion that its service can cost less than building in-house is a marketing claim, not an independent cost comparison. See Cloudinary pricing.
When to use a batch tool or a hosted pipeline
A browser compressor fits occasional, bounded work
If you need to compress a limited set of images manually, a browser tool’s upload caps make its boundary easy to see before you start. Confirm that your files fit the per-image limit and that the available conversions and metadata handling suit the job.
Rank #4
A hosted service fits integrated image delivery
If your application needs to create image variants and serve them to users, evaluate the whole pipeline: transformation volume, stored assets, and delivery traffic. A pooled credit allowance makes sense to assess against all three rather than treating the advertised monthly number as a simple count of images.

There is no universal break-even point
The available plan descriptions do not establish whether a hosted API or self-hosting will be cheaper for every solo project. A useful comparison needs your own traffic, typical image sizes, transformation mix, storage needs, and the current prices of the alternatives. Without those inputs, a break-even figure would be guesswork.
