Forums and review sites should treat user-generated content (UGC) as both a community-quality responsibility and a search-policy concern: actively moderate it, let people report abuse, keep useful public pages accessible, and use structured data that accurately describes what users can see. Markup can make a page eligible for certain search features, but it cannot guarantee indexing, rankings, or a rich result.
Start with moderation, not markup
Google identifies spammy forum posts and blog-comment spam as user-generated spam. A site can be responsible for addressing it even when users supplied the content or site staff did not notice the submission. Build a repeatable process to review reports and remove spam, abuse, and other policy-violating material.

- Provide an obvious way for users to report a post or review.
- Assign responsibility for reviewing reports and acting on them.
- Watch for spam patterns such as promotional posts, manipulative links, and reviews that do not reflect genuine experience.
Google lists active moderation and a reporting mechanism as criteria for its specialized UGC Fresh Data Program. That does not make these program criteria universal crawling rules, but it reinforces that moderation is part of responsible UGC operations. Google’s UGC Fresh Data Program documentation describes the program and its requirements.

Use the content’s actual shape and authorship to decide which structured data applies. Forum posts, Q&A pages, user reviews, and editorial reviews are not interchangeable.

| Page content | Appropriate approach | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| User-created discussion threads and replies | DiscussionForumPosting |
Do not use it for publisher-authored articles with comments or for product reviews. |
| A page organized primarily as questions and answers | Q&A markup | Google’s forum markup guidance recommends Q&A markup for this structure. |
| Genuine user reviews and ratings | Review or aggregate-rating markup, when the page meets the feature rules | Do not mark up fake, undisclosed incentivized, or externally aggregated reviews; self-serving review restrictions apply to local businesses and organizations. |
Google’s Discussion Forum structured data guide says: “Does your forum follow a question and answer pattern? Use Q&A markup instead.” It names community forums and social platforms where users post and reply as suitable examples, while excluding publisher-authored articles with comments and user product reviews.
Represent posts and replies faithfully
For a discussion page, identify the main discussion; on a page listing multiple discussions, do not falsely label one as the page’s main entity. Include the content that is actually on the page, including the full post and response text where displayed. Google’s required post properties include an author, author name, publication date, and a content representation such as text, image, or video. Comments likewise need an author, publication date, and text, image, or video representation. An external URL has a specific exception for a post represented on another page. Where available, link an author URL to the creator’s profile.

Keep useful UGC accessible and attributable
For ordinary Search crawling, public pages should be technically accessible to Google if you want Google to be able to discover and process them. If a page is blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, or requires a login, Google cannot access it as an ordinary public page for a search feature. Accessibility does not itself guarantee that a page will be indexed or shown.

Google’s UGC Fresh Data Program has additional, specialized criteria for qualifying high-volume platforms. Its documentation describes public, stable, dedicated URLs; creator attribution through a public profile; active moderation and reporting; significant audience and UGC volume; secure OAuth 2.0 API authentication; and strictly validated JSON-LD with on-page schema across URLs. Content should be submitted as fresh as possible, ideally within minutes, and engagement counters should be updated within 72 hours of creation. These are program-specific expectations, not requirements for every forum or review page. Further developer details are provided after acceptance.
Keep review markup genuine and separate from forum markup
Use review structured data only when the marked-up reviews and ratings are genuine, user-sourced, and visible to readers. Google’s review snippet guidance rules out fake reviews, reviews not based on genuine experience, and incentivized reviews unless the benefit is clearly and prominently disclosed. Do not combine ratings copied from other websites into your own aggregate rating.

For local businesses and organizations, there is a further restriction: a business or organization cannot use its own controlled reviews on its own pages to qualify for star review features. Ratings must come directly from users; human editors should not create or compile the rating. See Google’s review snippet structured data documentation for the applicable rules.
Do not use DiscussionForumPosting to mark up product reviews. Forum-post markup and review-snippet markup describe different kinds of content and have separate eligibility rules.

Distinguish customer reviews from Google’s Reviews System
Google’s Reviews System is about first-party, standalone editorial review content—for example, a page that analyzes, recommends, or compares products or services. Google says it does not evaluate third-party reviews users post in a product or service page’s reviews section. The system primarily evaluates pages, although a site with substantial review content may see broader evaluation.
This is separate from review snippet structured data. Markup may help Google understand qualifying user reviews and ratings, but it does not mean the editorial Reviews System is assessing those customer posts. Google’s Reviews System documentation explains the distinction.
Prevent user links from becoming link spam
Google names optimized links in forum comments or signatures as an example of link spam. Do not encourage keyword-rich signatures or let user-submitted links become a ranking-manipulation channel. For paid advertising or sponsorship links, use rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" as appropriate. See Google’s spam policies for its link-spam guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Validate the markup, then set realistic expectations
- Use the Rich Results Test to identify technical errors in supported markup.
- Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to see how Google accesses a representative page.
- Check that the structured data describes content visible on the page and that the page is not blocked by robots.txt,
noindex, or a login barrier when public access is intended. - Monitor Search Console where applicable for issues and search appearance information.
Google’s structured data policies require markup to be a truthful representation of visible page content. As Google states, “Google does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results, even if your page is marked up correctly according to the Rich Results Test.” A valid test result establishes neither indexing nor display. Read the general structured data guidelines alongside the relevant feature guide.
UGC pages and comment sections are not, by themselves, grounds to treat a site as violating Google’s site reputation abuse policy. The policy’s scope is distinct from the mere presence of third-party content. Google’s site reputation abuse policy provides the relevant definition.
