Fortnite no longer uses its old color-coded rarity tiers and quality names for cosmetics. Epic retired that system with v29.20; labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series remain, but they are Series labels, not the old rarity scale. A style is a separate variation of an individual cosmetic. To inspect styles included with a pack, select the item in your Locker and choose Edit.
What happened to Fortnite skin rarity?
For years, Fortnite’s cosmetic interface used colors and quality names to group items into rarity tiers. Epic said it retired that Battle Royale-inspired system with update v29.20 in its April 9, 2024 announcement, New and Upcoming Fortnite Shop and Locker Changes. That means the old color-and-tag labels should not be treated as Fortnite’s current, universal classification of cosmetic quality.

The change was to the labeling system. It does not mean that outfits, back blings, gliders, pickaxes, or their individual variations stopped existing. It means the old rarity colors and names are no longer the way Epic presents cosmetic quality in the Shop and Locker. If you are trying to understand a cosmetic you already own, look at its item details and available styles rather than trying to infer its current status from an old rarity color.

How rarity labels differ from Series labels
Epic said that Series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series would remain after the old color-and-tag system was retired. These labels serve a different purpose: they identify a named grouping of cosmetics, rather than assigning an item one of the old color-coded quality tiers.

So, seeing a Series label does not mean the old rarity system is still active under another name. The two kinds of labels answer different questions: the retired tiers expressed an old quality category, while Series labels help identify a named cosmetic grouping. A Series name also does not tell you how many styles an item has or how those styles are unlocked.
What a style means in Fortnite
Epic Support defines styles this way: “Styles are customizable or unlockable variations for cosmetic items such as skins, back blings, gliders and pickaxes.” In other words, a style is a version of a particular cosmetic, not a separate rarity tier. Depending on the item, its variations may be selectable or may have to be unlocked.
Styles can apply to more than outfits. A pack may include an outfit with several looks, a back bling with its own visual options, a glider with alternate designs, or a pickaxe with different appearances. The relevant question is always, “Which styles does this item offer, and what does this item require?” There is no universal number of styles attached to a particular Series.
There is no single style rule that applies to every outfit or cosmetic. The available variations and how you get them depend on the specific item. Do not assume that every style is included automatically, that every style uses the same unlock method, or that owning one version means you have every possible variation. A style can be visible in the item’s interface while still requiring an unlock condition.

How to find styles included with a pack
If you received or purchased a pack and want to check which styles are available for one of its items, Epic’s Support instructions are straightforward:
- Open the Locker.
- Select the outfit or other cosmetic from the pack that you want to inspect.
- Choose Edit to view the available styles for that item.
Repeat those steps for each included cosmetic. A pack’s outfit, back bling, glider, and pickaxe are separate items, so checking the outfit does not necessarily show the style options for the other contents. The Edit screen is the practical account-level check: it shows the variations associated with the item you selected rather than relying on a promotional image or a third-party list.
This is also the best way to avoid a common mistake after purchasing a pack. If a variation is not selectable, do not assume it is hidden in a different rarity color or that the purchase failed. Styles can be unlockable as well as customizable, and the unlock conditions depend on the cosmetic. Conversely, do not assume that a style shown in marketing imagery is automatically available on every related item.
Can old Battle Pass skins return to the Shop?
Epic’s August 7, 2024 announcement, Change to Item Exclusivity in Future Fortnite Battle Passes, says that future Fortnite Battle Pass items might be offered for purchase in the Shop at least 18 months after the relevant Battle Pass expires. “Might” matters: Epic says Shop selection depends on multiple factors and does not guarantee that any particular item will return.
This policy is about possible Shop availability, not a promise that a specific outfit will be sold. It also does not establish that all past Battle Pass items will return. When considering an item from a future Battle Pass, distinguish the stated possibility from a confirmed sale: Epic has not guaranteed an individual item’s return.

The timing is measured from the expiration of the relevant pass, and the announcement concerns future Battle Pass items. It should not be read as a blanket announcement that every older Battle Pass cosmetic has become available or that an item will appear exactly 18 months later. Shop selection remains a separate decision.

Availability and style inclusion are separate questions. Even if an item is offered in the Shop, Epic says the number of alternate styles included with it may vary. A returning item therefore should not be assumed to include every style that was associated with it in another context.
For example, an item can be offered while the set of alternate styles bundled with that Shop listing differs from the set players remember from a pass or an earlier release. Check the actual Shop listing and the item’s Edit screen instead of relying on an old image or a historical checklist.
Epic specifies one exception for LEGO Styles: if the item has a LEGO Style, that style always comes with the item in the Shop. That statement applies to the LEGO Style when one exists; it is not a general promise that every other alternate style will be included. It also does not guarantee that the item itself will return.
How ranked cosmetic styles work—and what not to assume
Epic Support guidance describes seasonal ranked cosmetic styles as unlocking according to the highest rank reached in compatible ranked modes, and says Arena does not count. Because eligibility can depend on the current season and the available official guidance does not establish a definitive current mode list, check Fortnite’s current official guidance for the season before relying on a particular mode to qualify.

This means a player should verify three separate details: whether the cosmetic is one of the seasonal ranked rewards, which modes are currently compatible, and what rank threshold unlocks the desired variation. Reaching a rank in a mode that is not eligible will not necessarily satisfy the condition. Do not transfer an eligibility rule from one season to another without checking the current instructions.
Some rank-displaying outfits are also described as showing the highest rank reached in the season in which the outfit was obtained. Epic Support gives Odyssey from Chapter 5 Season 2 as an example. Treat this as information about particular rank-themed outfits, not a rule that every ranked cosmetic or style updates dynamically, records every season, or follows the same timing. A rank display and a style-unlock condition can be related but are not automatically identical.

Fortnite has also had rules about which cosmetics can be equipped in islands with certain age ratings. Epic’s November 20, 2023 announcement, An Update on Cosmetic Gating, concerned that compatibility issue. It is separate from the retired cosmetic rarity labels: an island age-rating restriction does not tell you an item’s rarity or its style availability.
That announcement described a historical adjustment involving a small number of existing cosmetics and fewer than ten outfits remaining playable only in T-rated or regionally equivalent islands. Those figures describe the announcement at that time; they should not be read as a current count of restricted cosmetics. An island restriction is therefore not evidence that a cosmetic belongs to a higher or lower quality tier, and it does not explain why a style might be locked.

Common mistakes when reading Fortnite cosmetic information
- Using an old color as a current ranking. The former color-and-tag system was retired in v29.20.
- Calling a Series a rarity tier. Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series identify named groupings; they are not replacements for the old quality colors.
- Assuming a pack includes every displayed variation. Open the item in the Locker and choose Edit; styles may be customizable or unlockable.
- Checking only the outfit. Back blings, gliders, and pickaxes can be separate cosmetics with their own style options.
- Treating an 18-month window as a release date. Future Battle Pass items might be sold at least 18 months after expiration, but no individual return is guaranteed.
- Assuming a return includes every alternate style. Epic says the number of included alternate styles may vary.
- Generalizing one ranked outfit. Odyssey’s Chapter 5 Season 2 example does not establish how every rank-themed cosmetic behaves.
- Confusing age gating with rarity. Island compatibility and cosmetic labeling are different systems.
A quick way to interpret Fortnite cosmetic information
- Looking for the old rarity tier? The color-and-tag quality system was retired with v29.20.
- Seeing a Series name? Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series are examples of continuing Series labels, not the old rarity tiers.
- Trying to change an owned cosmetic? Select it in the Locker and choose Edit to inspect available styles.
- Expecting an alternate style? Check the item itself; styles can be customizable or unlockable, and availability varies by cosmetic.
- Waiting for a future Battle Pass item? Epic says future items might reach the Shop at least 18 months after a pass expires, but no individual return is guaranteed.
- Checking ranked progress? Confirm the current season’s eligible modes in Epic’s guidance rather than assuming every ranked mode or cosmetic follows the same rule.
