Formula 1 Grand Prix qualifying is a three-stage knockout: in 2026, all 22 eligible cars start in Q1, six are eliminated, another six leave after Q2, and the remaining 10 contest Q3. Q3 sets the top 10 qualifying places, while the times from the stage in which drivers are eliminated rank the rest.
What happens in Q1, Q2 and Q3?
The FIA’s 2026 Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 05, set the standard qualifying periods at 18 minutes for Q1, 15 minutes for Q2 and 12 minutes for Q3. The field narrows after each stage.

| Stage | Cars taking part | Duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 22 | 18 minutes | Six slowest are eliminated; 16 advance. |
| Q2 | 16 | 15 minutes | Six slowest are eliminated; 10 advance. |
| Q3 | 10 | 12 minutes | Drivers compete for qualifying places 1–10. |
The 22-car field and six-car elimination pattern are specified for 2026 by the FIA Sporting Regulations. Formula 1’s 2026 regulations explainer also describes the expanded field and eliminations.
Q1: all eligible cars begin
Every eligible car may take part in the opening 18-minute session. The six slowest are knocked out. In the normal 22-car classification, their Q1 times rank them from 17th to 22nd.

Q3: the top 10 fight for position
The final 10 have 12 minutes to determine the first 10 qualifying places. The fastest Q3 lap earns pole position, subject to any subsequent sporting decisions that affect the grid.

How do qualifying times determine the order?
Each driver’s position is based on the best time set in the stage where they were last eligible: Q3 times order the top 10, Q2 times order the six Q2 eliminations, and Q1 times order the six Q1 eliminations. If drivers record identical times in a qualifying period, the driver who set the time first receives priority under the FIA rules.
Qualifying produces a classification, not necessarily the final race-start order. Grid penalties and other sporting decisions can change where a driver starts.

Why are six cars eliminated in 2026?
The 2026 field has 22 cars, so eliminating six after each of the first two stages leaves 10 for the final session. Formula 1’s 2026 rules guide explains this adjustment in the context of the expanded grid.

No. Standard qualifying determines the Grand Prix starting grid. Sprint Qualifying is a separate knockout session that sets the Sprint grid and uses shorter session periods. The FIA treats the two formats separately in its sporting regulations; Formula 1’s weekend guide provides additional context on Sprint weekends.
