How Foldable Phone Screens Work—and Why They Crease

Foldable phone screens combine flexible OLED layers, protective materials, and a hinge. Repeated bending makes a crease visible, but its appearance alone does not diagnose damage.

Foldable phones use a flexible OLED display assembly, protective and support layers, and a hinge that guides the bend. The crease appears because the same narrow strip of that layered assembly bends every time the phone opens and closes; its visibility depends on the materials, bonding, support, and hinge design. A visible crease is an expected feature of the folding design, not by itself proof of a crack or imminent failure.

What is inside a foldable phone screen?

The inner display is a layered assembly, not a sheet of ordinary thick glass attached to a hinge. In simplified terms, the OLED creates the image, flexible supporting and protective layers help it bend while preserving a usable surface, and the hinge controls the phone’s folding motion.

Samsung describes layered ultra-thin folding-glass technology and a specially designed spine or hinge in its Galaxy Z technology guide. Corning explains that its ultra-thin bendable glass sits within the display stack, where it enables bending and helps protect the OLED. These examples show how some designs are built; they do not establish one layer order or bill of materials for every foldable phone.

Why does the screen crease?

Opening and closing the phone bends the same central strip of display again and again. That bend changes the shape of the layered assembly locally. When the phone is open, the strip may still be visible as a line or shallow trough; how noticeable it is depends in part on the materials and how the display is bonded and supported.

Corning says its bendable glass helps reduce creasing of the OLED’s organic layers. Samsung has also described model-specific construction changes intended to make the crease shallower: for the Galaxy Z Fold6, stronger bonding between the display and device was cited as one reason the crease is less pronounced than on the prior series. Neither example means a foldable screen can be guaranteed crease-free.

A crease alone is not a reliable diagnosis of damage. The available manufacturer descriptions do not establish a universal threshold for normal crease depth or a way to diagnose an individual phone from its appearance. A suddenly raised bump, dead pixels, or a layer that appears to be separating is a different concern; these sources do not diagnose those symptoms, so consult the phone maker or an authorized repair provider.

How the hinge and support layers affect the fold

The hinge guides the phone’s movement and has to give the flexible display room to bend. But the hinge is only one part of the system: adhesives, protective layers, and structures beneath the screen also influence how the fold is supported and how visible it looks when open.

For the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung says increased adhesive strength between the display and the device creates a shallower crease. Samsung’s separately announced Flex Titanium design uses a titanium-alloy film beneath the OLED panel and a titanium plate supporting the display module from below. The company says that design is intended to balance support with repeated-fold flexibility and reduce crease visibility; it is a Samsung-specific design description, not a standard found in all foldables.

What fold-count durability tests can—and cannot—tell you

A fold-count result applies to the particular panel and test conditions described by its maker. It is not a direct promise that every handset will last a fixed number of years: real use varies, and a lab count does not independently establish consumer lifespan.

Claim What it refers to
500,000 folds Samsung Display reported this result for its Galaxy Z Fold7 panel in a Bureau Veritas-verified test conducted over 13 days at 25°C in 2025. The test result concerns the panel, not a guarantee for every foldable phone. Samsung Display’s test announcement.
Over 10 years at about 100 folds per day; over six years at more than 200 folds per day These are Samsung Display’s 2025 extrapolations from the Fold7 panel test, not separately observed consumer-life figures. Samsung Display’s test announcement.
Up to 200,000 folds Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4/Flip4 guide says those models were tested for up to this many folds and certified by Bureau Veritas. It is an older, model-specific claim, and its page does not show a publication date. Its conditions should not be assumed identical to the Fold7 panel test. Samsung’s Galaxy Z technology guide.

Samsung Display’s 2025 announcement quotes Hojung Lee, its Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Display Product Planning Team, describing the test as a way to “build consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability.” That is the company’s characterization of its own test; it does not change the distinction between a panel test and a lifespan guarantee.

How to handle the inner screen and stylus

Follow the care instructions for the exact model you own. For the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Fold4, Samsung specifies the S Pen Fold Edition or S Pen Pro and warns that pens not designed for the device may damage the screen. Do not assume that guidance applies to every foldable or newer model; check that model’s current manufacturer instructions.

Samsung’s guide also says the inner glass surfaces of the Fold4 and Flip4 do not touch when those phones are closed. That design detail is not permission to place objects between the halves or press hard on the inner screen.
