Polar Night Energy’s “sand battery” is a form of thermal energy storage: electricity heats sand or a similar solid material, and the stored heat is later supplied for heating or industrial use. Finnish installations show the system can store renewable electricity for useful heat, including district heating. They do not show that the operating systems turn stored heat back into electricity; that capability remains under development.
How a sand battery works
The name can suggest a conventional electrical battery, but Polar Night Energy’s system stores energy as heat. During charging, electricity powers equipment that heats sand or another solid storage material. A closed-loop heat-transfer system carries energy into and out of the storage medium. When heat is needed, the system transfers it to a useful output rather than discharging electricity from the material itself. Polar Night Energy describes the operating principle and system outputs.

- Store: The solid material holds the energy as heat.
- Use: Heat-transfer equipment supplies heat when a customer or network needs it.
What the system delivers—and what it does not
Polar Night Energy says its system can provide hot water, process steam, or hot air, with output temperatures up to 400°C. That is a stated capability, not a temperature every installation necessarily reaches at all times. These outputs can serve heat users directly, but they are not the same as electricity returned to the grid.

Heat-to-electricity conversion is a separate development goal. Business Finland described the work as ongoing development in May 2025, while Polar Night Energy’s pilot description says the project is intended to evaluate conversion from heat to electricity. Those sources do not establish the final efficiency, commercial availability, or economics of such a system. Business Finland’s 21 May 2025 account and Polar Night Energy’s pilot announcement describe the work as development or evaluation, not a demonstrated grid-electricity service from the operating heat installations.

What Finnish deployments demonstrate
The projects provide examples of thermal storage at different scales. The figures below are reported by Polar Night Energy; thermal power describes the rate of heat delivery, while MWh describes stored energy capacity.

Pornainen demonstrates integration with a district-heating network; Kankaanpää provides an earlier commercial reference. Together, these projects support the case for storing energy as heat where there is a suitable heat demand. They do not establish that every location, heat network, or industrial process is a fit.
When this storage option may make sense
A thermal store is most relevant when the energy customer needs heat, rather than electricity, and can use the system’s delivered form and temperature. A municipality or utility considering district heating, or an industrial operator with a steady process-heat requirement, would need to assess:

- The required delivery temperature and heat output, compared with the system’s operating design.
- The desired storage duration, energy capacity, and rate of heat delivery.
- How the unit would integrate with existing heating equipment, the electricity supply, and network controls.
- Project cost and independently measured system efficiency over the relevant operating conditions.
The cited project sources give deployment figures, but not an independently verified, apples-to-apples comparison of cost, lifetime, or round-trip efficiency against electrical batteries or other thermal stores. Those values should not be inferred from the project capacities or temperatures.

What the emissions claim establishes
In 2026, Polar Night Energy reported a 70% emissions reduction for the Loviisan Lämpö project after one year. That is a company-reported result; the available account does not independently establish its calculation method or comparison baseline. The company’s report on the emissions target is evidence of the vendor’s stated outcome, not a universal reduction that can be applied to other installations.
