Fighting-game teams can reduce repeated setup and make character iteration faster by reusing production systems: asset metadata and exporters, animation and move scripting, procedural workflows, and modular rigging tools. Those systems can make it easier to change timing, collisions, or asset handoffs without making every fighter look or play alike. Public examples describe faster iteration and less repetitive work, but do not quantify days or staff hours saved per character.
How do fighting game developers make new characters faster?
They can reuse the production infrastructure around a character rather than treating each fighter as a fresh technical setup. A shared pipeline can give artists and designers consistent ways to name, validate, export, rig, and tune assets. The character still needs its own decisions: silhouette, movement, animation timing, mechanics, collision behavior, and visual effects.

That distinction matters because “reusable system” can mean several different things. A team might reuse a tool that exports assets, a framework that helps build rigs, or a scripting system for moves. None of those choices necessarily means copying a finished fighter’s animations or gameplay. Reusing the path through production can remove repeatable setup while leaving the creative and combat work specific to each character.

The sources offer examples rather than a universal industry blueprint. A 2012 Game Developer account of NetherRealm’s Injustice-era technology describes a proprietary animation and move scripting system that supported fast iteration. Game Developers Conference (GDC) session descriptions from 2018, 2023, and 2026 discuss pipeline architecture, customization across body shapes, and procedural character workflows. Together, they show the kinds of work reusable systems can support; they do not establish that every studio uses the same architecture or that any one system caused a larger roster to ship sooner.

Where reuse can save repeated setup
- Asset handoffs: Shared naming, metadata, markup, validation, and exporter conventions help downstream teams receive assets in a predictable form. GDC’s 2018 technical-animation panel identifies asset management, metadata, asset markup, and exporter frameworks as character-pipeline concerns.
- Animation and move tuning: A scripting system can let a team adjust behavior and timing through a repeatable workflow instead of rebuilding implementation for every move. NetherRealm’s reported system is a direct fighting-game example.
- Repeated transformations: Procedural methods can automate some recurring preparation or asset-building work while leaving artists control over decisions. Embark’s GDC 2026 session description discusses this approach using Houdini, USD, Houdini PDG, and Solaris.
- Rig and tool maintenance: Frameworks, metadata, and version-conscious tools can help a pipeline evolve without entangling every tool change with every character rig. A GDC session on rigging and pipeline tools describes these architectural concerns.
What does a reusable character pipeline do?
A character pipeline is the repeatable route by which work moves from creation to use in the game. It is not just one application or a shared folder. It can include how assets are named and described, how artists and technical staff exchange data, how rigs are created or updated, how exports are checked, and how animation or move behavior is implemented.
The practical advantage is consistency at the boundaries between tasks. If a character’s asset metadata is incomplete or its export differs from the expected format, later steps can require manual repair. Shared rules and validation can expose such problems earlier. That does not make the character itself automatic; it makes repeated handoffs less dependent on each contributor remembering an informal process.
A production loop built on shared foundations
- Define the data and handoff rules. Establish conventions for names, metadata, asset markup, ownership, and export expectations. GDC’s 2018 panel identifies these as pipeline topics. The exact conventions are studio-specific; the useful principle is that downstream users should be able to determine what an asset is and how it is meant to be used.
- Build or configure repeatable tools around those rules. Exporters, validators, rigging utilities, or plugins can make a standard handoff easier to repeat. A useful tool should expose what contributors need to change without requiring them to understand every internal implementation detail.
- Keep character decisions editable. Use scripts or procedural steps for work that follows repeatable rules, but preserve points where artists and designers can adjust the result. Embark’s GDC 2026 description emphasizes a range from manual to automated procedural methods and a pipeline intended to support different project needs.
- Test the result in the game context. Verify that the asset imports correctly and that the fighter’s animation, move behavior, and collisions work as intended. A clean export is not proof that the character feels right or behaves correctly during combat.
- Feed changes back into the shared system carefully. If a recurring problem calls for a tool or rule change, determine whether the fix belongs in the shared pipeline or in the character-specific data. GDC’s rigging-tool session describes version-centric plugins and separation between tool code and rigs or their metadata as ways to make tools more adaptable.
This loop is a practical synthesis of the documented pipeline topics, not a prescribed sequence used by every studio. Teams differ in their tools, production structures, and how much character work is procedural or hand-authored.

How does scripting help tune fighting-game characters?
In a fighting game, a move’s timing and collision behavior are part of how the character plays. A team needs to revise those details as animation and gameplay are developed together. If changing them requires a slow or fragile implementation cycle, designers and animators may have fewer opportunities to test alternatives.

In a December 2012 Game Developer account about NetherRealm’s Injustice technology, Ed Boon described a proprietary animation and move scripting system. He said the more code-based component let the team iterate on animation timing and collisions with a “very fast turnaround.” The account presents this as a reported benefit of that system, not as a measured comparison against another workflow. It does not say how many hours or days the system saved, nor does it establish that all character content used the same rig or animation.
The broader lesson is that a reusable implementation path can make small changes easier to make and evaluate. It does not determine the right timing or collision values. Those still need character-specific design, animation, and testing. A shared system can support iteration; it cannot replace the judgment required to decide whether a change improves a move.
How can procedural workflows reduce repetitive work?
Procedural workflows encode repeatable transformations or rules so that a team does not have to perform the same setup entirely by hand for every asset. Depending on the task, a person may trigger a process, adjust its inputs, inspect its output, or let parts of it run automatically. The point is not to automate every creative decision; it is to reserve manual attention for work where it matters.

It describes a pipeline built around Houdini and USD, with Houdini PDG and Solaris, and a mix of procedural methods ranging from manual to automated. The stated aim includes minimizing repetitive work while supporting games with different needs. This illustrates a possible production approach, not evidence that a fighting-game team should adopt the same software or that those tools independently guarantee faster character delivery.

For a fighting-game team, a useful question is whether a repeated task has stable rules. A predictable conversion or validation step may be a good candidate for automation. A task that depends on a fighter’s expressive pose, intended silhouette, or distinctive motion may need direct artistic control. The balance can vary: procedural setup can create a starting point, while an artist edits the result for the character.
Do fighting games reuse character rigs and animations?
The cited examples do not establish a general answer about how widely fighting-game teams reuse rigs or animations. NetherRealm’s account describes a shared animation and move scripting system, but does not say all characters used one rig or reused the same animation content. A common script or rigging tool is different from a common finished animation.
When teams do share rigs, assets, or customization systems, variation and compatibility become important production problems. GDC’s 2023 session description for Rumbleverse says its customization system had to support accessories across six body shapes. Technical artists and designers developed an accessory system and pipeline intended to enable customization while preventing broken or unappealing combinations.
That example is not a claim that the Rumbleverse system shortened character delivery. It shows a different challenge: reuse across multiple shapes creates combinations that need to be checked. For a fighting-game roster, the same general design question applies when a shared asset or rig must work across body proportions, costumes, or other character-specific variations. A system that accepts everything without compatibility rules may create more cleanup than it saves.

How can developers reuse tools without making every fighter feel the same?
Put reuse at the level where the work is genuinely repeatable, and leave distinctive character decisions available to the people making the fighter. A shared exporter can standardize delivery without standardizing a silhouette. A rigging framework can provide common capabilities without dictating the final poses. A move scripting system can offer a consistent way to implement behavior without requiring identical move timing.
It helps to separate five decisions when assessing a proposed shared system:
- Reuse scope: Is the team sharing low-level tools and handoff rules, or sharing finished character assets and animations? These have different consequences for character identity.
- Iteration cost: Does the system make it easier to change the details that the team actually needs to tune, such as timing, collisions, exports, or rig behavior?
- Distinctiveness: Can artists and designers still shape each fighter’s silhouette, movement, mechanics, timing, and effects?
- Compatibility burden: How many body shapes, skeleton variants, costumes, or game systems must a shared asset or tool support, and how will invalid combinations be caught?
- Change risk: Can the tools evolve during production without silently breaking existing rigs, metadata, or assets?
These are decision dimensions drawn from the documented pipeline and customization examples, not results of a head-to-head evaluation of named fighting-game toolchains. A team can use them to make trade-offs explicit: broad reuse may reduce duplicated setup but increase compatibility work; highly character-specific content may preserve control but create more one-off maintenance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does tool architecture matter over a long production?
A production tool that works for the first character may be awkward to extend after requirements change. New asset types, rig needs, or workflow steps can expose assumptions built into an early implementation. If tool code is tightly coupled to a particular rig or its metadata, updating one may force changes to the other.
Best Value
A GDC session on rigging and pipeline tools describes version-centric plugin architecture, scalable asset systems, rigging on demand, and separating tool code from rigs or their metadata. These are architectural approaches for keeping tools adaptable as production evolves. They are not a guarantee that updates will be safe: teams still need to manage compatibility and understand which existing assets depend on a particular tool behavior.
For a studio, the useful test is whether a tool change has a clear scope. If a plugin update changes how new rigs are generated, can older rigs still be identified and handled? If asset metadata changes, can tools distinguish the old and new forms? Planning for versioning and separation makes those questions part of tool design instead of emergency fixes late in production.
What can public examples—and their limits—tell us?
The clearest fighting-game example here is the NetherRealm account: a proprietary system for animation and move scripting, with Ed Boon reporting quick iteration on timing and collisions. The procedural workflow example comes from Embark and is described by GDC in 2026, but is not a fighting-game case study. The body-shape compatibility example comes from Rumbleverse’s 2023 GDC session. The pipeline and rigging architecture material comes from GDC session descriptions, including a 2018 technical-animation panel.
These sources support a practical conclusion: reusable infrastructure can reduce some repeated setup and make iteration or asset handling more manageable. They do not provide a quantified before-and-after production comparison, a universal pipeline pattern, or evidence that a named tool directly enabled a larger roster to ship faster. There is no defensible percentage or per-character time saving to report from these examples.
For readers evaluating a studio workflow, the strongest evidence of useful reuse is not simply that a team has a shared tool. It is whether the tool removes repeatable friction, supports the required character variation, preserves meaningful creative control, and can change without making existing work unreliable.
