How Fiber Laser Cutting Is Reshaping Modern Metal Manufacturing

Fiber laser cutting can handle diverse metal parts and integrate with automation, but its production value depends on material, thickness, geometry, operating needs and safety—not power rating alone.

Fiber laser cutting is reshaping metal manufacturing by giving shops a precise, configurable way to cut sheet, tube and three-dimensional parts—and by pairing those machines with automated material handling. Its value is not determined by laser power alone: material, thickness, geometry, cut quality, throughput, setup, automation, operating costs and safety all affect whether a system suits a particular shop.

How fiber laser cutting works—and what changes on the shop floor

A fiber laser delivers energy through an optical fiber and focuses it onto a small spot on the workpiece. Fujikura attributes the precision of the process to beam quality and the high energy density created by focusing that spot. The focused heat cuts the metal along a programmed path.

Fiber lasers are one option among industrial metal-cutting processes. Fujikura Europe describes them as an efficient alternative to CO2 or plasma for some applications, while noting that those methods remain in use. Any efficiency or processing-time advantage is application-specific; a vendor comparison is not a guarantee of savings for every manufacturer.

The manufacturing change is also about machine configuration. Available equipment includes flat-sheet cutters, tube cutters, combined sheet-and-tube systems, three-dimensional cutting machines and systems integrated with loading and unloading. Cutlite Penta describes these configurations on its product page. Automation can reduce manual handling or link cutting to material storage, but it adds equipment and integration decisions rather than making every job automatically faster.

Monport 60W Fiber Laser Engraver, Fiber Laser Marking Machine with Red Dot Pointer, LightBurn Compatible 5.9"x5.9" Metal Etching Machine for Metal Marking with 100000 Hour Lifespan BSLcad Included
  • Brand New Integrated Mini Fiber Laser: The brand new Monport fiber marking machine has a smaller size and lighter weight; Simultaneously maintaining the original high performance and a lifespan of up to 100000 hours. The fiber laser can engrave all metals. (gold, silver, copper, stainless steel, brass, titanium, etc.)
  • Faster and More Accurate: The newly customized galvanometer system is equipped with more expensive silicon material reflectors, allowing for a maximum speed of 10000mm/s. Monport has also customized an F-theta field mirror, which, together with the entire marking system, can achieve a carving accuracy of 0.01mm.
  • Just Right Working Area: For a 60W Fiber Laser, an area of 150*150mm is optimal, as excessive engraving area may result in poor engraving effect or even distortion. After special tuning by Monport, even when carving at the edges, there will be no weak light.
  • Deep Engraving and Cutting Capabilities: With this 60W fiber laser marking machine, you can perform 2.5D metal engraving, deep metal engraving, and even some metal sheet cutting (usually the higher the power, the stronger the deep engraving and cutting ability, and the higher the efficiency. If you want stronger and faster results, Monport recommends purchasing a 60W or above machine)
  • Lightburn Compatible: All Monport fiber marking machines can be operated using Lightburn, but if you don't want to use Lightburn, we also provide free and easy-to-use software (Free software and backup parameters are saved on a USB drive and included in the packaging).

How thick of metal can a fiber laser cut?

It depends on the material, laser power, optics, process settings and the desired production result. Fujikura’s current product information gives these maximum-thickness examples for its 3 kW and 6 kW oscillators:

Material 3 kW example 6 kW example
SS400 mild steel 22 mm 35 mm
Stainless steel 10 mm 20 mm
Aluminum 10 mm 20 mm
Brass 12 mm 17 mm
Copper 2 mm 6 mm

These are Fujikura’s equipment-specific reference figures, not assured production outcomes. Its product information states, “These processing data do not guarantee processing,” and notes that results can be affected by laser conditions and peripheral optical systems and equipment. The figures alone do not establish production speed, edge quality, piercing stability or suitability for a particular part.

  • xTool F2 Ultra Single is a Class 4 laser engraver, the fiber laser output power being 60,000mW

Higher-power systems extend the range of available equipment, but a rating is not an independent performance test. Coherent announced its 30 kW EDGE FL30 on September 4, 2025, describing it as engineered for thick-sheet cutting. That is a manufacturer product announcement, not a neutral comparison or proof that a 30 kW system is appropriate for every fabricator.

Where the technology can change production

More choices for part geometry

Sheet-only cutting may fit work dominated by flat profiles; tube, combined sheet-and-tube or 3D systems address different geometries. The right format depends on the parts a shop actually makes and how material moves through the rest of production.

  • Revolutionary Working Area and HD Resolution: The F1 Ultra boasts the largest desktop fiber laser engraver working space at 220mm x 220mm, expandable to 220mm x 500mm if with the auto conveyor. This enlargement doesn't compromise the detail and precision of HD photo engraving in any corner, unlike other fibers with switchable lenses.

Potentially less manual material handling

Loading, unloading and storage can be integrated with cutting systems. Those options may support higher utilization or more consistent material flow, but their benefit depends on job mix, staffing, layout and integration. Assess the complete production cell rather than assuming automation pays off by itself.

Different cutting capabilities, not a universal replacement

Fiber, CO2 and plasma processes each remain relevant to some metal-cutting applications. A change in process should be justified by the shop’s materials, thickness range, part requirements and workflow—not by a broad claim that one technology has made the others obsolete.

How to compare fiber laser cutting systems

Start with representative parts and production conditions instead of comparing headline wattage or best-case thin-sheet speed. Ask vendors to demonstrate the work that matters to your operation and document the conditions behind their results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the material and thickness mix. Include the actual alloys and gauges the shop runs, including reflective metals where relevant, and distinguish routine work from occasional maximum-thickness jobs.
  2. Evaluate finished-part requirements. Inspect cut quality, piercing stability, repeatability and any deburring or other post-processing on representative parts.
  3. Measure throughput on real jobs. Compare representative nests and production runs, not only a vendor’s best-case speed on thin sheet.
  4. Choose a machine configuration. Decide whether the work requires sheet, tube, combined sheet-and-tube or 3D cutting, and whether loading, unloading or storage automation fits the production flow.
  5. Build a complete cost picture. Include installation and operation, power, assist gas, consumables, extraction, maintenance, training and service response. The sources cited here do not establish a neutral, like-for-like total-cost comparison or universal payback period; request application-specific quotations and test cuts.
  6. Check support and controls. Assess local service availability, software and controls, operator training and the support available when production is interrupted.
  7. Review safety and installation needs. Check enclosure, interlocks, ventilation, maintenance procedures and applicable requirements with qualified safety personnel before selecting and installing the equipment.

Safety is part of the equipment decision

Laser cutting involves hazards that require machine-specific controls. ISO 11553-1:2020 addresses laser-radiation hazards from laser-processing machines, associated safety requirements and information supplied by manufacturers. ISO reports that the 2020 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025 as current: ISO 11553-1:2020.

OSHA’s laser-hazards standards page points to ANSI B11.21 for machine tools using lasers, IEC 60825-1 for laser-product classification and requirements, and ISO 11553-1. Its Technical Manual says ventilation should reduce potentially hazardous fumes and vapors from laser cutting and related processes to appropriate exposure limits.

The applicable controls vary with the machine, installation, materials and jurisdiction. Use the machine manufacturer’s current documentation and involve qualified safety personnel in installation, ventilation, operation and maintenance decisions.
