How Federal Reserve Interest-Rate Decisions Can Affect Bitcoin

The Fed can influence Bitcoin through financial conditions and market expectations, but a rate hike or cut does not dictate which way BTC will move.

Federal Reserve decisions can influence Bitcoin through interest rates, financial conditions, and investor expectations—but they do not set Bitcoin’s price or produce a dependable “rate cuts up, rate hikes down” pattern. A move that was already expected may have little effect; the Fed’s outlook or the economic conditions behind its decision can matter as much as the headline.

What does the Federal Reserve decide?

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) sets a target range for the federal funds rate, the rate for overnight borrowing between banks. The Federal Reserve’s stated monetary-policy goals are maximum employment and stable prices. Its policy changes can affect other interest rates and broader financial conditions, which in turn influence spending and economic activity. The Fed does not set Bitcoin’s price.

Markets receive more than a rate number. After scheduled meetings, the FOMC releases a statement, and the chair holds a press conference. Projections and later-published minutes can also shape expectations about the future policy path. See the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy page for its policy materials and meeting communications.

How do Fed rate hikes affect Bitcoin?

There are plausible ways a tighter policy stance could weigh on Bitcoin, but none is a reliable price formula.

  • Opportunity cost: Higher interest rates can improve the return available from some interest-bearing alternatives. Because Bitcoin does not pay interest, that may make it less attractive at the margin to some investors. This is an economic mechanism, not proof that Bitcoin must fall after a hike.
  • Financial conditions and risk appetite: Policy changes can affect borrowing costs and investor willingness to hold risk-sensitive assets. Bitcoin may move alongside other assets in response, but its measured relationship with macroeconomic news has varied across studies.
  • Expectations: If markets anticipated the decision, the headline may already be reflected in prices. The statement, projections, or press conference may matter if they change investors’ view of what comes next.

Does Bitcoin go up when interest rates are cut?

Not necessarily. A cut can ease financial conditions and reduce the relative appeal of interest-bearing alternatives, which could support demand for speculative assets. But a cut may also signal that policymakers see economic conditions worsening. Investors may react to that information as well as to the policy change itself.

It helps to distinguish the policy impulse—the effect of a lower target rate—from the economic signal investors infer from the decision. The cited studies do not establish one causal explanation that applies to every meeting.

Why can Bitcoin fall after a Fed announcement?

A falling price does not necessarily mean that markets expected a hike and were surprised by one. Bitcoin could decline after a cut if the decision was less accommodative than expected, if the Fed’s communications suggested higher rates for longer, or if investors focused on adverse economic news. Conversely, a hike that was fully anticipated might prompt little movement in the rate announcement window.

For a specific meeting, compare the decision with what markets expected beforehand, then read the statement and projections and consider the press conference. A rate change that actually occurred is not the same as an unexpected change: the latter depends on what investors had already priced in.

What do studies say about the Bitcoin response?

The available findings do not support one universal estimate. Researchers examine different periods, event windows, assets, and measures of monetary policy, so results should be read in the context of how each study was designed.

Study What it examined Finding and qualification
New York Fed Staff Report 1052, February 2023 Intraday responses to monetary and macroeconomic news in the study’s data and method. Bitcoin was “orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news” in the analysis. The authors describe this as puzzling if Bitcoin is treated as a speculative asset that should respond to discount-rate news. It is a finding for that study, not a timeless conclusion.
“Monetary policy shocks and Bitcoin prices,” 2022 A model of monetary-policy shocks using the two-year Treasury yield. The paper estimates that a hypothetical unexpected 1-basis-point increase in the two-year Treasury yield on an FOMC meeting day is associated with a 0.25% decline in Bitcoin’s price. This is a model-specific estimate, not a forecast for an actual meeting or a rule for the effect of each basis point.
IMF working paper, “The Crypto Cycle and US Monetary Policy,” August 2023 Relationships between U.S. monetary policy and crypto-market cycles, including alternative policy measures and model specifications. The paper’s results depend on the sample, policy measure, and specification. They do not establish a stable one-direction Bitcoin response.
Mesut Savrul, 2026 An event-window study of 43 scheduled FOMC announcements between 2021 and 2026, considering realized rate changes, hike/hold/cut categories, and movements in the VIX and dollar index. The study says its available surprise measure has only two nonzero observations, so it focuses on alternative measures rather than formal surprise estimates. Realized rate changes should not be mistaken for cleanly identified policy surprises.

The New York Fed result and the yield-based estimate point in different directions, but they are not directly interchangeable. One analyzes intraday responses to news; the other reports a model-specific association with a hypothetical yield shock. The IMF paper examines crypto-market cycles, while Savrul’s event-window study uses realized rate changes and other measures over its stated sample. Differences in sample period, market regime, event window, and policy measure can help explain why findings conflict; they do not provide a universal trading signal.

How to interpret a particular Fed meeting

  1. Identify what was expected. A decision’s meaning for markets depends partly on whether it differed from expectations, not just on whether rates rose, fell, or held steady.
  2. Read the full communication. Compare the FOMC statement and projections with the decision, and consider what the chair said at the press conference. Later minutes may add detail to the discussion.
  3. Separate policy from economic news. Ask whether the move signals easier or tighter policy, and whether investors may also be responding to the economic conditions behind it.
  4. Check what any cited study measured. Note its event window and sample, whether it measured a realized rate change or a surprise, and whether it studied Bitcoin alone or a broader crypto or risk-asset group.

The Federal Reserve’s meeting statements, projections, press-conference materials, and minutes are available through its monetary policy page. A study’s historical association describes its own data and method; it cannot tell you how Bitcoin will respond to a current or future decision.
