It depends on the habitat’s radius and the gravity level you want. To create about 1 g, a rotating habitat with a 100-meter radius needs roughly 3 revolutions per minute (rpm); one with a 10-meter radius needs about 9.5 rpm. These are calculations from the rotation equation, not measurements from a working spacecraft.
Why radius determines the spin rate
At a distance from the rotation axis, circular motion requires inward acceleration. For a rotating habitat, its magnitude is a = ω²r, where a is acceleration, ω is angular velocity in radians per second, and r is radius. A person standing on the inside of the habitat presses against the floor; the floor’s normal force provides that acceleration, which is felt as weight. NASA discusses gravity level, gravity gradient, and Coriolis force as connected artificial-gravity design factors in its Physics of Artificial Gravity chapter.

For a chosen acceleration, rearrange the equation to get ω = √(a/r). To convert radians per second to rpm, multiply by 60/(2π). The larger the radius, the slower the habitat can rotate to provide the same apparent gravity: doubling the radius lowers the required rpm by a factor of √2.
Approximate spin rates for 1 g
Using standard Earth gravity of approximately 9.81 m/s², the equation gives these approximate rates:

| Habitat radius | Spin rate for about 1 g | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m | 9.5 rpm | Calculated from a = ω²r |
| 50 m | 4.2 rpm | Calculated from a = ω²r |
| 100 m | 3.0 rpm | Calculated from a = ω²r |
These figures illustrate the physics; they are not published NASA statistics or results from a spacecraft test. A lower target than 1 g would require a slower spin at the same radius.
What spin rate is comfortable for a crew?
There is no single “safe rpm” that applies to every person, task, and habitat. Human response depends in part on how quickly the structure rotates, its radius, what people do inside it, and whether they have time to acclimate.

Design guidance and test results are not universal limits
A NASA-hosted proposal describes about 6 rpm as a general upper limit for expected comfort and capability without an acclimation period. It notes that faster rotation may cause motion sickness in more people and make simple movement harder; the same proposal presents 3 rpm as a more modest baseline. These are design recommendations, not guarantees about how every crew member will respond. NASA Technical Reports Server proposal.

Why movement and body height matter
Turning the head or moving through a rotating frame can produce Coriolis effects, which may feel disorienting. The apparent acceleration also varies with distance from the axis, so a standing person’s feet and head do not experience exactly the same acceleration. A 2015 peer-reviewed review describes historical comfort estimates of 0.3–1 g at 6 rpm and radii of 12–24 m, while explaining the role of movement-related Coriolis effects. Those are historical estimates summarized by the review, not settled modern engineering standards. Review: Artificial gravity as a countermeasure for mitigating physiological deconditioning during long-duration space missions.
NASA also notes that later data suggested some earlier limits for Coriolis-related motion sickness were overly conservative. That does not make every faster design comfortable: conventional comfort criteria also consider walking and moving objects. Tolerance during a particular experiment, comfort during a particular task, and a good design for a long-duration habitat are different questions. NASA discussion of comfort criteria.

Why very low spin rates require enormous structures
Slower rotation can ease some human-factors challenges, but for a given gravity level it requires a larger radius. A NASA concept overview says that producing near 1 g at 1–2 rpm calls for a kilometer-scale structure. This is a concept-study statement about the scale involved, not evidence that a crewed rotating habitat of that kind is operational. NASA, Kilometer-Scale Space Structures from a Single Launch.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
- The required rpm cannot be specified without both the habitat radius and the desired acceleration.
- Small habitats need faster rotation for the same acceleration, which increases the importance of movement-related effects and acceleration differences across a person’s height.
- NASA materials discuss a few rpm as a human-factors design range, but comfort depends on task, acclimation, radius, and individual response.
- The cited material does not establish a single current human-safe spin threshold for every mission, or a definitive long-term artificial-gravity dose that prevents physiological deconditioning in a real rotating spacecraft.
