How Farmers Can Protect Crops From Wildlife Without Harming It

A practical, species-specific approach to reducing crop damage: identify the wildlife, assess exclusion and habitat options, and use temporary deterrents carefully.

To protect crops from wildlife without killing animals, first identify the species and document where and when damage occurs. Then address what is attracting or enabling access, use a suitable physical barrier where practical, and add species-appropriate repellents or scare devices only as supporting measures. No single deterrent works for every animal, crop, or site, and wildlife can become accustomed to some devices.

Identify the animal and map the damage first

Choose a deterrent only after you have a reasonable idea which animal is responsible. Different species damage crops in different ways, and a method that excludes one animal may do little against another. University of Missouri Extension recommends identifying the species, understanding its biology and habitat needs, selecting appropriate techniques, and evaluating the results (University of Missouri Extension’s wildlife damage management guidance).

Keep a simple record before changing the site: note which crop or field edge is affected, the location and pattern of damage, when it appears, and any animal activity you observe. This helps distinguish a recurring access route from a broader attraction and gives you a way to judge whether an intervention is helping.

Choose an approach that fits the problem

Think of non-lethal control as a sequence rather than a single product: reduce avoidable attraction, block access if feasible, and use temporary deterrents to supplement those measures. The right balance depends on the target animal, crop, area, terrain, and local requirements.

Approach Potential role Trade-offs to consider
Fencing, screens, netting, or wire Physical exclusion for persistent access problems Must suit the species and cover likely entry points; installation, repairs, upfront cost, and maintenance matter.
Habitat modification Reduce conditions that attract or support the target wildlife Changes need to fit local ecology; poorly chosen changes can create unintended effects.
Visual or acoustic devices Temporary or supplementary scaring Animals may habituate; noise, neighbors, and local restrictions may also matter.
Repellents Species- and use-specific product option Effectiveness varies; some products require reapplication and must be suitable for the crop and used according to their label.

Use barriers for repeated access

When wildlife repeatedly reaches the same crop area, a physical barrier can provide more dependable exclusion than relying on a scare device alone. Options include fencing, screens, netting, and wire; their design and suitability depend on the animal and the area being protected. Iowa State University Extension’s Problem Wildlife guidance and Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 2024 Vegetable Production Guide, Chapter 5 discuss exclusion approaches.

Before installing a barrier, consider how much ground it must cover, where animals are likely to enter, how durable it needs to be, and whether you can maintain it. A large or robust fence may require substantial initial expense and ongoing repair. Cornell’s vegetable guidance describes woven-wire and electric options with different cost and maintenance characteristics; neither is a universal fit.

Consider electric fencing only after checking suitability

Electric fencing is one possible physical exclusion method for crop protection, including in extension guidance on deer damage. Its suitability depends on the target species, fence design, crop, terrain, and installation. Before installing one, check applicable local requirements and use current manufacturer instructions. Guidance on managing deer damage to crop fields in Oklahoma is state-specific, not a specification for every farm.

Match netting or mesh to the crop and animal

Crop protection netting and wire mesh can be useful where they physically shield an appropriate crop area, but they are not universal solutions. Check that the material and installation address the animal’s access route without creating a new problem for the crop or site. Iowa State Extension’s Vertebrates in the Vegetables resource covers wildlife issues in vegetable settings.

Reduce what attracts wildlife where practical

Habitat modification means changing site conditions that draw or support the target animal, rather than trying to frighten it away after it arrives. USDA APHIS and University of Missouri Extension include habitat modification among non-lethal wildlife-management approaches. What is appropriate depends on local ecology and the species involved; avoid changes that simply shift the problem or cause unintended effects.

Use scare devices as temporary support

Visual and acoustic devices can help in some situations, but their effect may fade as animals become accustomed to them. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension discusses this limitation in its Repellents and Wildlife Damage Control guidance, and University of Florida IFAS Extension also notes habituation in its deterrent guidance.

If a scare tactic appears useful, treat it as one part of a plan: monitor whether damage changes, vary tactics when appropriate, and combine them with exclusion or habitat measures where feasible. Consider noise impacts on neighbors and check local rules before using devices that could be restricted.

Use repellents carefully and according to the label

Repellents are not interchangeable: their effectiveness depends on the target animal and conditions, and some need reapplication. Select a product intended for the relevant use and crop, and follow its current label. Pesticides must be used only as registered and directed on the label; also check current local rules. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s general guidance is older, so current product labels and local requirements should govern any present-day use.

Monitor results and adjust the plan

  1. Record the baseline. Note the crop area, damage pattern, timing, and observed animal activity before changing the site.
  2. Make one or a manageable number of changes. Start with practical habitat measures or a suitable barrier, then add a species-appropriate temporary deterrent if needed.
  3. Check for changes in damage and access. Compare observations with your baseline rather than assuming a device is working because it is present.
  4. Revise what is not working. Reassess the species identification, barrier coverage, maintenance, and whether wildlife has become accustomed to a scare tactic.
  5. Verify requirements before regulated methods. Check local wildlife rules and current product or equipment instructions before using repellents or electrical fencing.

What the USDA non-lethal figure does—and does not—show

USDA APHIS Wildlife Services says personnel encounter about 26 million animals each year when responding to calls for assistance and that “Approximately, 93% of them are dispersed using nonlethal methods” (USDA APHIS Wildlife Services Nonlethal Initiative). The page does not state a publication year for these figures. They describe the agency program’s response to calls; they are not a farm-level crop-damage reduction rate or a guarantee that a particular method will work for a grower.
