Halfords lists the current Carrera Subway-E 2’s range as 25–40 miles (about 40–64 km) per charge, describing 40 miles as an ideal-conditions maximum. Treat that as a broad estimate, not a guaranteed distance: the listing does not disclose the conditions or test method behind its figures. Assistance mode, weather, tyres, wind, and the combined weight of rider and luggage can all affect how far you get.
What range should you plan for?
For the current Carrera Subway-E 2, Halfords’ product listing gives a range of 25–40 miles per charge. It calls the figure a real-world range, while its ideal-conditions caveat applies to the furthest end. The listing does not specify a test protocol or give the rider weight, route, temperature, wind, tyre pressure, or assistance mode used to arrive at the range. That makes the figure useful for setting expectations, but not precise enough to promise that a particular journey will be within reach.

For an unfamiliar route, use the lower end of the range as your starting point rather than planning around 40 miles. Leave additional margin when the ride is cold, windy, hilly, heavily loaded, or likely to involve frequent stops. This is conservative trip-planning advice, not a separate test result for the bike. Once you have observed how your own bike performs on familiar routes, your experience can help you plan more accurately for similar conditions.
Is 40 miles realistic?
It is the upper, ideal-conditions end of the retailer’s stated range, not a distance every rider should expect on every ride. Halfords does not publish a current-model range breakdown by assistance mode or by weather, rider weight, or terrain. There is therefore no supported way to say that a particular mode, route, or rider will achieve 40 miles. If arriving with battery to spare matters, build your plan around a more conservative distance and account for the conditions you expect.

What is behind the range estimate?
The current model has a removable 378 Wh (10.5 Ah) Bafang battery. Halfords says it can be charged off the bike and that a completely flat battery takes up to six hours to charge using the supplied 2 A charger. Those specifications describe the battery and charging, not a fixed miles-per-charge result: the distance depends on how much assistance is used and what the ride demands.
The display shows remaining range, and the current listing names five assistance modes: Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+, and Boost. Halfords does not publish a tested distance for each mode. A display estimate can help you keep an eye on the ride, but it should be read in the context of your actual conditions; the listing does not establish a precise prediction method or guarantee for the remaining distance.
What Halfords’ number does—and does not—tell you
The 25–40-mile range is a useful starting point, but it is not a controlled comparison between the five modes or a promise tied to a particular rider and route. Halfords does not say which mode, temperature, wind, tyre pressure, elevation, or rider-and-luggage weight produced either end of the current range. The 40-mile figure is explicitly associated with ideal conditions, so it is best treated as an upper estimate rather than a target to rely on.

What affects how far it goes?
Assistance mode and how you ride
Using a lower assistance level when it provides enough support is a practical way to avoid using more assistance than you need. Increase support when it is useful, such as on a climb, rather than assuming one mode will suit every part of a route. The available modes are not accompanied by current-model miles-per-mode figures, so treat this as a way to manage assistance, not a quantified promise of extra distance.
The older manual for a different Subway E system lists pedalling behaviour, speed changes, and stop-start traffic among factors that affect range. Those are reasonable considerations when planning a ride, but they are not measured current-model results. Where the route allows, a steady pace and fewer unnecessary speed changes may help you avoid demanding bursts of assistance; traffic conditions are not always under your control.
Temperature, wind, and route
Halfords explicitly names temperature and climate, as well as wind speed and direction, as range factors. A headwind can make a route more demanding than the same distance with a helpful wind; colder conditions are another reason to leave more margin. The earlier system’s manual also identifies route and hills as factors, but it does not provide a current-model penalty for a particular climb or temperature.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not apply a made-up percentage reduction to account for cold, wind, or elevation. The current listing gives no controlled comparison for those conditions. Instead, consider the direction and difficulty of the route, allow for less predictable conditions, and avoid treating the display’s remaining-range figure as a substitute for a conservative plan.

Tyre pressure and condition
Halfords identifies tyre pressure as a factor and lists Kenda 27.5 × 1.95-inch tyres on the bike. Before a longer ride, check that the tyres are inflated within the pressure range printed on their sidewalls. The appropriate value is the one shown on the tyre, not a pressure guessed from a generic e-bike recommendation. A floor pump with a pressure gauge can make the check easier; no particular pump or accessory is required by the range information.
The earlier SR Suntour manual also lists tyre condition and e-bike maintenance among general factors that may affect range. That is a reminder to keep the bike in good working order, not a specific maintenance schedule or a quantified range claim for the current Bafang model. Halfords describes optional CycleCare plans for regular maintenance, repairs, and servicing; whether a service plan is worthwhile depends on your needs, and it is not required to achieve the listed range.
Rider and luggage weight
The retailer specifically points to the combined weight of rider and luggage. Include what you plan to carry when judging whether a route is suitable, rather than thinking only about the distance or the bike by itself. The product listing does not publish a range adjustment by weight, so it cannot support a miles-per-kilogram calculation.

- Map the full journey. Consider the total riding distance, not just the outward leg. Include hills, likely stops, and any parts of the route where changing conditions could make assistance more useful.
- Choose a conservative distance. If you have not yet learned how the bike behaves on a similar route, plan around the lower end of Halfords’ stated range and leave extra margin for cold, wind, hills, or luggage. Do not treat the upper figure as a target you are certain to reach.
- Check the tyres. Before setting out, read the pressure range on each tyre’s sidewall and check inflation. This addresses one of the factors the retailer identifies without assuming a pressure that may not suit your tyres.
- Use assistance deliberately. Start in Eco or another lower setting when it gives enough help; use a higher setting when the ride calls for it. The display offers Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+, and Boost, but the product listing does not tell you how many miles any one mode adds or subtracts.
- Watch the display during the ride. Use its remaining-range information as one input to your decision-making. If the route ahead is more demanding than expected, adapt your pace or assistance where practical and reassess whether you have enough margin to complete the planned ride.
- Recharge with time in hand. The battery is removable and may be charged off the bike. Halfords says a completely flat battery takes up to six hours with the supplied 2 A charger, so allow for that maximum charging time when planning a departure after a depleted ride.
Why older Subway E range figures may differ
Some older information refers to a 30-mile Turbo / 62-mile Eco chart in an SR Suntour HESC manual dated November 2020. The chart states that its figures assume 12.5 mph (20 km/h), level road, and 15–20°C. That manual describes an earlier system, not the current Bafang configuration with its 378 Wh battery. Its distances should not be presented as test results for the current Subway-E 2.

The older manual does provide a wider list of general e-bike range factors: rider weight, luggage, route choice, pedalling behaviour, maintenance, tyre condition and pressure, hills, speed and speed changes, traffic flow, and wind. These points can help explain why two rides of the same nominal distance may use a battery differently, but the manual’s system-specific chart cannot establish what the current model will do. Keep the generations separate when comparing figures found online.
In short, the older 62-mile Eco figure is not evidence that the current bike will cover 62 miles, nor does the 30-mile Turbo figure predict what the current Boost mode will achieve. The manual is for the SR Suntour HESC system, while Halfords describes the current bike as using Bafang components and a 378 Wh battery. The model generations and their stated conditions are different, so use Halfords’ current 25–40-mile listing when setting expectations for the present bike.

If you want to learn what range to expect on your usual journeys, compare like with like rather than treating one ride as a universal benchmark. Note the factors that the current product information and earlier manual identify, then compare rides with similar conditions. A long headwind ride with extra luggage is not a fair direct comparison with a mild-weather ride on a flatter route.

- Note temperature and wind direction, and whether the route includes significant hills.
- Include rider and luggage weight as context, without assuming a fixed mathematical adjustment.
- Check that tyre pressure is within the sidewall range and note any meaningful difference in tyre condition.
- Consider whether stop-start traffic or frequent speed changes affected the ride.
This approach can help you build a personal planning reference for routes you repeat. It does not turn those observations into a controlled test or establish a guaranteed range for other riders. Halfords has not published a current-model comparison across modes or conditions, and no independent current-model range test is established here.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far can the Carrera Subway-E 2 go on one charge?
Halfords lists the current model at 25–40 miles (about 40–64 km) per charge. It describes 40 miles as an ideal-conditions maximum, so plan conservatively until you know how your bike performs on your routes.
Can the Subway-E 2 really reach 40 miles?
Forty miles is the upper end of Halfords’ estimate, associated with ideal conditions. The listing does not publish the test conditions or a mode-by-mode range, so it cannot guarantee that distance for a particular rider, route, or weather.
How far will it go in Eco or Boost mode?
Halfords lists Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+, and Boost, but does not give a tested range for each mode. Use a lower setting when it provides enough support, and leave extra margin when a route or conditions are demanding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long does the battery take to charge?
Halfords says the removable 378 Wh (10.5 Ah) Bafang battery can be charged off the bike and takes up to six hours to charge from completely flat with the supplied 2 A charger.
Why do I see 30-mile and 62-mile figures for an older Subway E?
Those figures come from a November 2020 SR Suntour HESC manual for an earlier system. Its chart assumes 12.5 mph (20 km/h), level road, and 15–20°C; it is not a range test for the current Bafang Subway-E 2.
The Bottom Line
For the current Carrera Subway-E 2, use Halfords’ 25–40-mile claim as a range, not a guarantee. Plan nearer the lower end for an unfamiliar ride, account for assistance mode, weather, wind, hills, tyre pressure, and carried weight, and treat the display’s remaining-range figure as a guide. Older 30-mile Turbo and 62-mile Eco numbers belong to a different system and should not be applied to the current bike.
