There is no reliable single distance for quadruped robots: manufacturers publish battery runtime for representative models, not a standardized distance-per-charge result. To estimate a robot’s route distance, you need its actual moving speed and runtime with the intended battery, payload, terrain, and task pattern.
What published specifications say
Two manufacturer examples show why runtime should not be mistaken for range. Unitree lists Go2 battery life of about 1–2 hours for AIR, PRO, and X, and about 2–4 hours for EDU with the long-endurance battery. Boston Dynamics lists 90 minutes average runtime for Spot. Neither figure is a guaranteed number of metres or kilometres travelled on a charge.

| Robot and configuration | Published battery information | Published speed information | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unitree Go2 AIR, PRO, X | About 1–2 hours of battery life, according to Unitree’s Go2 product specifications. | The Go2 page gives a maximum running speed of approximately 5 m/s tested in a lab; its performance table lists speed from 0 to 2.5 m/s. | A measured or guaranteed distance per charge for a defined route, payload, or operating pattern. |
| Unitree Go2 EDU with long-endurance battery | About 2–4 hours of battery life, according to Unitree’s configuration table. | The product page’s speed figures are not a distance-per-charge test for this battery configuration. | A corresponding route distance or standardized comparison against other configurations. |
| Boston Dynamics Spot | 90 minutes average runtime and a 564 Wh battery, according to the Spot product specifications. | Maximum speed is listed as 1.6 m/s. | A conversion of average runtime and maximum speed into a guaranteed travel distance. |
These are different machines, configurations, and specifications—not results from a shared route test. The pages do not state one common test protocol that would allow a fair distance-per-charge comparison. Unitree says its parameters may vary by scenario and configuration; Boston Dynamics says Spot runtime may vary with payload and environmental factors.
Why runtime is not the same as distance
Runtime tells you how long a robot can operate under some set of conditions. Distance describes how far it travels over a route. The two figures connect only when you know how much of the runtime is spent moving and the speed the robot sustains while doing so.

A robot may spend part of a deployment standing by, turning, inspecting an object, interacting with an operator, or performing another task. A route may also require pauses at waypoints or careful movement through obstacles. That time consumes part of the operating window without adding the same distance as uninterrupted forward travel. Even when a robot is walking, its speed on the route may be below a published maximum.
Maximum speed is particularly easy to misuse. Unitree describes approximately 5 m/s as a Go2 maximum running speed tested in a lab, while its performance table separately shows 0–2.5 m/s. Boston Dynamics lists Spot’s maximum speed as 1.6 m/s. Those numbers are not measurements of average speed throughout a real mission. Multiplying a maximum by an advertised runtime would therefore produce a theoretical calculation, not a manufacturer-verified range.

How to estimate distance for a particular mission
For a first estimate, use the robot’s average speed while it is actually moving and its observed operating time under the conditions you intend to use. Keep moving time separate from total mission time. The calculation is:
Estimated distance = average moving speed × time spent moving

For example, if a hypothetical robot averages 0.5 m/s while moving and spends 30 minutes moving, the arithmetic gives 900 metres: 0.5 metres per second × 1,800 seconds. This is an illustration of the formula, not a range claim for Go2, Spot, or any other specific robot. If a deployment lasts an hour but the robot is moving for only half that time, use the half-hour moving period in the distance calculation.
For a real estimate, collect data from the exact model and battery configuration on a representative route. Record both total elapsed operating time and the time spent walking, then calculate distance from the route or odometry data available for the robot. Repeat under the intended conditions; a single result may not represent a different payload, surface, temperature, or task schedule.

- Identify the exact configuration. Record the model, battery version, and any configuration details that affect the mission. Do not assume that a runtime listed for one Go2 version applies unchanged to another.
- Define the route and task pattern. Include surfaces, inclines, turns, obstacles, stops, inspection or work tasks, and any return leg. A route that includes repeated stops is not equivalent to continuous walking.
- Use the intended payload and environment. Test with the equipment the robot will carry and in conditions representative of the deployment. For Spot, Boston Dynamics expressly identifies payload and environmental factors as influences on runtime.
- Measure moving speed and operating time. Track actual distance and moving time separately from stationary task time. Use the measured moving average—not the maximum speed—as the speed input.
- Plan against the complete route. If the robot must return to its starting point, include the return distance and any time spent doing work along the way. Do not treat one-way distance as round-trip capability.
Conditions that change the result
When asking for a distance estimate or comparing two claims, specify the conditions that shape both energy use and time spent moving. The manufacturer pages establish that configuration, payload, and environment matter; they do not provide a universal adjustment factor for each one.

- Battery and robot configuration: Confirm the exact model and battery version. A runtime for a long-endurance battery should not be assigned to a standard-battery unit.
- Payload: State the weight and type of anything carried. Spot’s manufacturer specifically cautions that payload can affect runtime.
- Surface and terrain: Describe the floor or ground, inclines, uneven sections, and obstacles. A route description makes a test more useful than a bare distance number.
- Gait and pace: Ask what gait and average moving speed were used. A maximum speed does not say how quickly the robot covered a mixed route.
- Walking versus waiting: Report how much time was spent walking, stopped, or doing work. Total runtime and moving time answer different questions.
- Operating environment: Specify temperature and other relevant environmental conditions. Boston Dynamics notes that environmental factors can change Spot runtime.
- Route definition: Clarify whether the quoted distance is one-way, total distance travelled, or a complete out-and-back mission.
Go2 battery versions and what they mean for distance
Unitree’s Go2 page lists a standard battery rated at 8,000 mAh (236.8 Wh) and a long-endurance version shown at 15,000 mAh in the model table. It also lists standard and long-endurance battery versions among the Go2 configurations and accessories. These specifications help identify the battery, but capacity alone does not establish how far a particular Go2 will travel: the page gives battery-life ranges by configuration rather than a route distance measured under specified conditions.

If you own a Go2 and want more time between charging sessions, check that any battery listing is compatible with your exact model and configuration. A battery with a different capacity should not be presented as a guaranteed distance upgrade; route conditions and the way the robot is used still matter.
How to compare a seller’s range claim
A range number is useful only if you can tell what was measured. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the conditions and result in terms that match your mission, rather than relying on a speed figure multiplied by a runtime figure.
- Which exact model and battery version were tested?
- What payload, gait, surface, incline, and operating temperature were used?
- What was the average speed while moving, and how much of the test was spent walking versus stopped or doing work?
- Was the outcome runtime, one-way distance, total distance travelled, or a route that included a return?
- Was the figure measured on a representative mission, or calculated from separate speed and runtime specifications?
For a deployment where reaching a location and returning matters, request a route test with the intended payload, task pattern, and environment. The published Go2 and Spot specifications do not provide a common route protocol or a verified cross-model distance figure, so a claim without its test conditions cannot reliably answer whether either robot will complete your particular mission.

For longer deployments, the operational question may be how the robot can recharge during the workday, not only how long it runs after one charge. Boston Dynamics describes the Spot Dock as a self-charging station and says additional docks can be placed at larger sites to extend operating range. This is a way to support operation across a site; it does not change the meaning of Spot’s published runtime into a single-charge distance guarantee. See Boston Dynamics’ Spot Dock support description for the charging-station details.
What you can conclude from the available figures
For the named examples, the defensible comparison is in operating time: Unitree lists about 1–2 hours for Go2 AIR, PRO, and X, about 2–4 hours for Go2 EDU with the long-endurance battery, and Boston Dynamics lists 90 minutes average runtime for Spot. The manufacturer pages do not establish a representative distance per charge for those configurations. A realistic route estimate requires the exact robot and battery, measured moving speed, and runtime observed under the payload, terrain, environment, and task pattern that the mission will actually use.
