For a 65-inch 4K TV, start at about 6.5 feet (1.98 metres) if you want an immersive view. It is a preference-based starting point, not a required minimum. Sony Support lists 47 inches (about 3.9 feet) as a minimum reference distance for a 65-inch 4K TV; that closer figure addresses pixel visibility, not the viewing distance everyone will find most comfortable.
Why the recommended distances differ
There is no single objectively correct seat for a 65-inch TV. The two commonly cited figures answer different questions. A minimum reference distance is about how close you can sit before individual pixels may become discernible. A viewing-angle recommendation is about how much of your field of vision the screen occupies, and therefore how immersive the picture feels.

Sony Support’s guidance, last modified January 17, 2025, gives 47 inches for a 65-inch 4K TV as a minimum reference. Sony says its 4K recommendation is based on a distance of 1.5 times the screen’s vertical size, and advises adjusting for personal preference and room layout. In other words, 47 inches is not a universal ideal or a requirement to sit that close.
What Hi-Fi? gives 1.98 metres (6.5 feet) as a useful 65-inch 4K starting point, using a rule of thumb of roughly 1.2 times the screen diagonal. Its guidance connects that distance with an approximately 40-degree field of view for home-cinema viewing. That larger angle makes the picture more immersive, but whether it feels right is personal.

Choose a distance based on resolution and viewing style
Resolution changes how close a viewer can sit before the picture’s pixels are noticeable, so distance guidance should always name the resolution assumption. The cited advice generally places a Full HD viewer farther back than a 4K viewer at the same screen size.
| Use or reference | Distance for a 65-inch TV | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 4K, immersive starting point | 1.98 metres (6.5 feet) | What Hi-Fi?’s recommendation, based on roughly 1.2 times the diagonal and an approximately 40-degree home-cinema viewing angle. |
| 4K, minimum reference | 47 inches (about 3.9 feet) | Sony Support’s minimum reference for a 65-inch 4K TV, intended as pixel-visibility guidance, not an all-purpose ideal. |
| Full HD, recommended range | 2.48–4.13 metres (about 8.1–13.5 feet) | What Hi-Fi?’s range for a 65-inch Full HD TV. |
| Full HD, general manufacturer rule | Three times the vertical screen size | Sony’s general HD rule; the cited guidance does not give a separate 65-inch distance for this formula. |
| Older regional chart, UHD | 2 metres | A Samsung Singapore brochure lists this as general guidance for a 65-inch UHD TV; the older brochure credits Rtings. |
| Older regional chart, Full HD | 2.7 metres | The same Samsung Singapore brochure’s general guidance for a 65-inch Full HD TV. |
The Samsung Singapore figures are supporting context rather than the lead recommendation: they come from older promotional material, with an exact publication year not confirmed. The fact that the figures do not match the other recommendations is a reminder that advice may use different assumptions and rules of thumb.

How viewing angle changes the experience
What Hi-Fi? describes around 30 degrees of field of vision as suitable for mixed use and around 40 degrees as a home-cinema target. A wider viewing angle makes a screen occupy more of your view, which can make films feel more enveloping. A narrower angle gives a more relaxed view for everyday programming. These are viewing preferences, not pass-or-fail thresholds.
At the 6.5-foot starting point, you are following What Hi-Fi?’s immersive 4K guidance. If that feels too close, move back until watching is comfortable; if you want a more cinema-like view and can sit comfortably closer, the Sony minimum reference helps explain why a 4K screen can be viewed from nearer than 6.5 feet. Do not treat the minimum as a target that you must reach.

How to find your seat in your room
- Check the TV’s resolution. Use the 4K starting point if the 65-inch set is 4K. If it is Full HD, consult Full HD guidance instead; do not apply a 4K figure without noting the difference.
- Measure from your seated eye position. Sit where you normally watch and measure from that position to the screen. The viewing-angle example from What Hi-Fi? assumes one viewer sitting straight on and at eye level.
- Choose the kind of view you want. For an immersive 4K starting point, try about 6.5 feet. For mixed viewing, What Hi-Fi?’s approximately 30-degree angle is a more relaxed reference than its 40-degree home-cinema target.
- Watch your usual content for comfort. If the picture feels too dominant, move back. If you prefer more immersion and the view remains comfortable, you can move closer. The cited recommendations are guidance, not safety limits.
- Account for every seat you use. A distance that works for one person directly in front of the TV may not suit people seated farther to the side or at different distances. Treat a multi-seat layout as a compromise rather than assuming one measurement will deliver the same view to everyone.
Adjust for the content you watch
For films, a closer seat can help create the more immersive viewing angle associated with home cinema. For mixed programming, the approximately 30-degree reference is a less enveloping alternative to the 40-degree cinema target. If watching sports makes you uncomfortable because your eyes have to scan across the screen, What Hi-Fi? suggests sitting slightly farther back.
These are different ways to balance a large image against viewing comfort, not separate fixed distances for every programme. If several people watch together, or you alternate between films, sport and everyday television, prioritize the seat and angle that remain comfortable across those uses.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
- 6.5 feet is a 4K immersion starting point. It comes from What Hi-Fi?’s viewing-angle-based guidance, not a rule that applies to every room or viewer.
- 47 inches is Sony’s 4K minimum reference. It concerns pixel visibility, not the distance every viewer should choose for comfort.
- Full HD guidance generally puts viewers farther back. What Hi-Fi? gives a 65-inch Full HD range of 8.1–13.5 feet, while Sony describes its general HD rule as three times the vertical screen size.
- Personal comfort and room layout matter. Sony explicitly advises adjusting its guidance for preference and layout; the angle example assumes a single, centered viewer.
Sony Support puts the central point plainly: “The best viewing distance depends on the TV’s size and display resolution.” For this screen size, resolution narrows the useful starting point, while your preferred level of immersion, content and seating arrangement determine where you will actually want to sit.
