The Sombrero Galaxy is about 30 million light-years from Earth and roughly 50,000–60,000 light-years across. Those are rounded estimates: its distance varies slightly among published sources, and its diffuse outer stars do not create a sharp, agreed boundary for measuring its full width.
How far away is the Sombrero Galaxy?
The Sombrero Galaxy—also known as Messier 104 (M104) and NGC 4594—is about 30 million light-years away. NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog lists 28 million light-years, while NASA’s description of a Hubble image released in 2025 says around 30 million light-years. A 2016 study using Hubble observations measured 9.55 megaparsecs, equivalent to about 31 million light-years.

These figures are consistent as rounded estimates, not measurements that must match exactly. The 2016 study, “The Distance to M104” by McQuinn and co-authors, used the tip of the red giant branch method. The authors also noted that earlier estimates varied by method and that Tully–Fisher estimates may be poorly suited to M104’s unusual shape. Public-facing distances therefore summarize measurements made or reported in different ways.

Its commonly quoted diameter is roughly 50,000–60,000 light-years. NASA’s 2003 Hubble image description gives 50,000 light-years wide; a NASA and Hubble Heritage Team educational lithograph from 2004 describes it as 60,000 light-years across.

Think of either number as an approximate width, not a precise edge-to-edge measurement. M104 has a visible disk as well as a fainter, more extensive component of old stars. The 2016 distance study discusses infrared observations showing the disk embedded in a substantially larger, roughly spherical distribution of old stars. What counts as the galaxy’s outer edge depends partly on which component and brightness threshold are being measured.
Why does it look like a sombrero?
We see M104 nearly edge-on. Its bright central bulge forms a rounded crown, while the flat disk and its dark dust lane stretch across the bulge like a brim. That orientation gives the galaxy its familiar hat-like outline; the appearance is a view of its structure from our direction, not its shape from every angle.

Its classification reflects that structure’s complexity. NASA describes it as a spiral galaxy, a straightforward description of its visible disk. The 2016 study notes that M104 has historically been treated as a large-bulge spiral, while its larger spheroid has led some researchers to classify it as elliptical. The differing labels reflect which structural features are emphasized.

How large does it appear from Earth?
Physical width and apparent size are different measurements. NASA’s 2025 Hubble image description says the galaxy spans about one-third of the full Moon’s diameter in the sky. That is its apparent angular size, not a claim that it is one-third as wide as the Moon in physical terms. Because M104 is so broad on the sky, NASA’s Hubble view combines multiple images into a mosaic rather than fitting the galaxy into one narrow field of view.

Can you see M104 without a telescope?
No: M104 is beyond naked-eye visibility. NASA’s Messier catalog gives it an apparent magnitude of 8.0 and says it can be spotted through small telescopes, most easily during May. NASA’s 2003 Hubble description likewise says a modest telescope can show it. Seeing it depends on observing conditions and equipment; the Hubble mosaic is not a view a person would see unaided.
