How Far Apart Should Mesh Wi-Fi Routers Be? A Practical Placement Guide

Mesh routers have no universal maximum spacing. Compare manufacturer starting points and learn how walls, node placement and Ethernet backhaul affect the link.

There is no single maximum distance for mesh routers. The right spacing depends on your system, building materials, obstacles and whether the nodes communicate wirelessly or through Ethernet. As starting points, TP-Link recommends a maximum of 50 feet between wireless Deco units for best performance, while ASUS suggests 3–5 meters between an AiMesh router and node and no more than 10–15 meters between multiple ZenWiFi packs. These are model-specific manufacturer guidelines, not universal limits.

What distance should you start with?

Use the recommendation for your exact mesh system as a starting point, then check the connection where you place each node. The published figures vary because they apply to particular product families:

System guidance Suggested spacing What the figure means
TP-Link Deco No more than 50 feet TP-Link’s 2026 guidance for wireless Deco units, intended for best performance; it is not a universal limit. TP-Link Deco guidance
ASUS AiMesh 3–5 meters ASUS support guidance for the wireless distance between an AiMesh router and node; the support page does not state a year. ASUS AiMesh guidance
ASUS ZenWiFi No more than 10–15 meters ASUS guidance for the optimal distance between multiple ZenWiFi packs; the support page does not state a year. ASUS ZenWiFi guidance

These numbers are not directly interchangeable: they refer to different manufacturers and product families. A clear, open 10-meter path can work better than a shorter route through dense walls. Distance alone does not predict whether a node will get a usable connection.

Why the same distance can work in one home and fail in another

Walls, floors and construction materials

Each obstruction along the path can weaken a wireless link. Concrete, brick and steel are more challenging than standard drywall, according to TP-Link’s guidance on thick walls. ASUS likewise recommends fewer and less substantial walls between AiMesh devices. A node separated from the main unit by several floors or dense walls may therefore need to be closer than one in an open-plan space. TP-Link guidance on thick walls

Placement and interference

Put nodes in open locations rather than inside cabinets or behind large obstructions. Keep them away from metal objects and electronics that may interfere with the wireless link. TP-Link recommends placing Deco units at the same height and checking signal quality in its app; ASUS recommends minimizing walls between AiMesh devices. These are product-specific instructions, so follow the guidance for your own model. TP-Link Deco placement guidance ASUS AiMesh placement guidance

Place a node where it can still reach the mesh

A satellite needs a reliable connection back to the main router or another node. Placing it in the dead zone you hope to fix can leave it with a weak link, so it may not relay traffic effectively. Start nearer the main unit, then move the node toward the area needing coverage while checking its connection quality.

  1. Check the manufacturer’s placement recommendation for your exact model.
  2. Place the node in an open spot with fewer walls and obstructions between it and the mesh.
  3. Use the system’s app or indicator to assess the node-to-mesh link.
  4. If the system reports a weak or failed link, move the node closer or choose a clearer path.

For Deco, the app can assess link quality. NETGEAR Orbi’s status light uses colors to indicate good, fair or failed connections; consult the instructions for your specific Orbi model to interpret its light. TP-Link Deco app guidance NETGEAR Orbi status-light guidance

When Ethernet backhaul changes the placement decision

With wireless backhaul, each node depends on a radio connection to the rest of the mesh, so signal conditions constrain its placement. If your system supports Ethernet backhaul, a cable can provide a more stable and faster connection between Deco units and make their physical placement more flexible, according to TP-Link. Confirm that your particular system supports wired backhaul before planning around it. TP-Link Ethernet backhaul guidance

How to decide whether to move a node

  • The app or status light reports a weak connection: Move the node closer to the main router or another node, or reduce the number of obstructions between them.
  • The connection is good but a room still has poor coverage: Try a more open location nearer that room while keeping the node’s connection to the mesh strong.
  • A short gap performs poorly: Consider whether walls, floors, metal or interference block the path; a shorter distance does not guarantee a better link.
  • Wireless placement remains unreliable: If supported, consider Ethernet backhaul rather than stretching the wireless link farther.

Manufacturer app features and indicator behavior differ, so use the feedback provided by your own mesh system rather than treating another brand’s colors or checks as universal.
