An F-Droid repository is a source of app listings and packages that you can add to the F-Droid client. Adding one makes its catalog available; it does not install any apps. To reduce risk, get the repository address from a source you trust and, when a signing-key fingerprint is provided, verify it against a value obtained through a separate trusted channel.
What an F-Droid repository does
The F-Droid client includes the official repository by default, and you can add other repositories or disable sources you do not use. A repository supplies an index describing available apps and packages, along with the associated APK files. Custom repositories do not necessarily build apps from source: they may simply distribute APKs obtained elsewhere. See F-Droid’s repository setup guide.

F-Droid documents signed index formats, including a v1 signed JAR containing index data and v2 JSON indexes. Its official repository publishes an entry point and signatures; for the v1 index, F-Droid recommends verifying the JAR signature before extracting the index. The API documentation describes the formats and verification.
How repository signatures relate to app signatures
These signatures serve related but distinct purposes. The repository signing key establishes the repository’s identity and protects its index. Android APK signing identifies the signer of an app package. F-Droid says its client automatically verifies integrity using the repository signature; signing is not a substitute for deciding whether you trust the repository or want a particular app. More detail is in F-Droid’s signing process documentation and signing-server documentation.

How to add a repository to F-Droid
F-Droid documents three ways to add a repository. The exact prompts can vary by client version; if the flow differs, use the current controls shown in your client rather than assuming a particular warning or screen will appear.
Use a repository link
- On your Android device, open the repository link from a source you trust.
- Choose “Add to F-Droid” when offered.
- Review and confirm the prefilled address in the F-Droid client.
Scan a QR code
- Scan the repository’s QR code with your Android device.
- When prompted, open the link in F-Droid and confirm the address.
Enter the address in F-Droid
- Open F-Droid and go to Settings > Repositories.
- Tap the plus icon, then enter the repository address or use the address populated for you.
- Enable the repository.
After setup, repositories appear under Settings > Repositories. You can inspect a source’s contents and choose apps individually. Adding the source does not install its apps. Follow F-Droid’s repository-addition tutorial for the documented flows.

How to check a repository before adding it
- Confirm where the URL came from. Prefer the repository maintainer’s official channel or another source you already trust. A working add flow confirms only that the client can use the address; it does not establish who sent it or whether the operator is trustworthy.
- Check the signing-key fingerprint independently, if one is published. Compare it with a value obtained through a separate trusted channel. A fingerprint copied from the same untrusted page or message as the URL does not independently confirm the repository’s identity. F-Droid’s mirror documentation shows an example repository URL that includes a SHA-256 fingerprint.
- Stop if the key changes or does not match. Contact the maintainer using a separately trusted channel before continuing; do not assume that a changed key is legitimate.
- Review the catalog before installing. Adding a repository only makes its listings available. Decide separately whether to install any app it offers.
- Keep the official source enabled unless you have a reason to disable it. Adding another source does not require turning off F-Droid’s default repository.
What a repository address can tell you
F-Droid’s setup guide describes /fdroid/repo/ as a customary repository path, not a requirement. Repositories can be served from other URLs, and the guide prefers HTTPS. The path or use of HTTPS alone does not establish that a repository is trustworthy; consider the operator and verify the signing identity when an independently confirmable fingerprint is available.
If you operate a repository
For maintainers, repository safety depends in part on protecting the signing key. F-Droid recommends generating a real public repository on a non-public machine, keeping its configuration and keystore there, backing them up, and deploying repository files to a separate server over SSH. Its setup guide warns that repository signing keys should not be on a public server.

The signing key is central to repository identity and needs secure custody and reliable backups for the repository’s lifetime. F-Droid documents fdroid init for creating a signing key, as well as manual key configuration. Signing-server and hardware security module approaches are options for higher-security operator setups, not requirements for someone adding a repository.
