One-click scans. No signup required.
No single scan can tell you how exposed your personal data is. Exposure shows up in separate places: breach records tied to your email address, public listings, reused passwords, and signs that someone has misused your identity. Each place needs its own check and its own response. This guide walks through them in order, says what each check can and can’t tell you, and pairs every result with a proportionate next step. None of it requires a paid service.
What “exposed” actually means
Four signals get lumped together, and they mean different things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A breach record: an organization that held your data was compromised, and your email appears in the leaked data.
- A public listing: your address, phone number or other details appear on a people-search or data-broker site.
- Weak or reused credentials: a password that works on more than one account, which turns one breach into several.
- Misuse: evidence that someone has used your information, such as an account you didn’t open or a charge you didn’t make.
A result in one channel doesn’t settle the others. Being in a breach isn’t proof of fraud. A clean breach lookup isn’t proof that nothing is out there.

Step 1: Check breach records tied to your email
Run an email lookup
Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) is a breach lookup and notification service. You enter an email address and it tells you which breaches loaded into its database include that address. It also offers optional notifications if your address appears in future breaches it lists.

Read a clean result correctly
A no-match means no match in HIBP’s data set. It doesn’t mean your information has never been exposed. The service doesn’t search every data broker, account, device or offline record, and it only knows the email addresses you test. Check each address you’ve used for important accounts, including old ones.
How common a hit is
At FTC PrivacyCon 2024, a presenter described a study that used the HIBP API. According to the transcript, 73% of participants had at least one breach associated with their email, and participants averaged 5.4 breaches each. Those are findings for that study’s participants. They aren’t a risk score for you or an estimate for the general population. They do suggest that finding a hit shouldn’t be a shock.

Gather your breach notices
Collect any notices you’ve received and note the organization and the data types each one names. Passwords, payment cards and Social Security numbers call for different responses. If a notice arrives unexpectedly, don’t click its links. Go to the organization’s official site or phone number to confirm it’s real.

If a breach involved passwords, change the password at that organization. Then change it anywhere else you reused it. Use a unique password for each account and turn on multifactor authentication where it’s offered. HIBP’s own page recommends a password manager for this. A manager is a convenience, not a requirement, and no particular provider is endorsed here.

Step 3: Separate exposure from misuse
Appearing in a breach or a public listing is an exposure signal. It isn’t evidence that anyone has committed fraud. Look for concrete signs instead:
- Transactions on bank or card statements you don’t recognize.
- Accounts, loans or inquiries on your credit reports that you didn’t open.
- Bills, collection notices or tax and benefit letters for things you didn’t do.
- Login alerts or password-reset emails you didn’t request.
Free credit reports are the main way to spot new accounts. Check the current rules at AnnualCreditReport.com before relying on a specific frequency. An FTC item noted that weekly free reports were extended through December 2023, so that detail is historical and shouldn’t be treated as today’s policy.

Step 4: Respond to an actual breach notice
The FTC runs breach-specific guidance at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. It matches recommended steps to the kind of information that was exposed. The FTC also says that if the company offers free identity theft or credit monitoring services, you should take advantage of them. Monitoring detects problems; it doesn’t prevent them, and it doesn’t measure your total exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 5: Respond to identity theft
If you see signs of misuse, the FTC’s recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov describes this sequence:

- Contact the companies where fraud occurred, and close or freeze the compromised accounts.
- Change the logins for affected accounts.
- Place a fraud alert and review your credit reports.
- Report the theft to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov to get a personalized recovery plan.
- Dispute fraudulent accounts with the relevant company and credit bureau, and keep a record of every contact.
Fraud alert or credit freeze?
| Fraud alert | Credit freeze | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Makes it harder to open new credit in your name | Limits access to your credit report until you lift or remove it |
| Duration | One year, per FTC guidance | Stays until you lift or remove it |
| Cost | Free to place and remove | Free to place and remove |
The FTC doesn’t say every reader needs either one. A fraud alert is a lighter, temporary measure. A freeze is stronger and lasts longer, but you have to lift it when you apply for credit yourself. Ask the credit bureaus how to place and lift each one.
Step 6: Check public broker listings separately
Breach databases say nothing about whether your address, phone number or relatives appear on people-search or data-broker sites. The only way to find out is to search for yourself on those sites. Each site has its own opt-out process, and listings can reappear. No comparative evidence here establishes that any paid removal service works better than doing this yourself, so treat coverage claims from any such service as unverified until you can check them. Prioritize the sites that show your current home address.
Quick Recap
A proportionate plan
| What you found | What to do |
|---|---|
| Email appears in a breach, no passwords involved | Watch for phishing; turn on HIBP notifications if you want them |
| Password exposed or reused | Change it everywhere it was used; make each one unique; enable multifactor authentication |
| Breach notice naming sensitive data | Follow IdentityTheft.gov/databreach; accept any free monitoring offered; review credit reports |
| Unfamiliar accounts or charges | Contact the companies, place a fraud alert or freeze, report at IdentityTheft.gov |
| Details on broker sites | Submit each site’s opt-out request and recheck later |
| Nothing found | Keep your credentials strong and re-check periodically; a clean result covers only what you searched |
