Exchange operators make money mainly by charging for transactions and clearing, selling market data, and providing related services. The mix varies by company: some operate multiple venues and clearing businesses, while others also sell technology, connectivity, listings, or routing services. That is why an exchange group’s revenue is not simply a fee on each stock trade.
How exchange operators earn revenue
An exchange group can connect buyers and sellers, process trades after they are agreed, and package information generated by its markets for customers. Its filings may combine or separate these activities differently, so category labels matter when comparing companies.

Trading and transaction fees
Venues charge customers for using their markets. The fee may be based on the number of contracts, a transaction’s notional value, or other activity measures. Rates can also differ by product and customer type, such as members and non-members. Revenue therefore depends on more than the number of trades: average fees, trading volume, product mix, and customer mix all matter.

It reported $1,847 million in cash-equity trading revenue, alongside $1,307 million in transaction rebates and $366 million in SEC Section 31 fees. Nasdaq says Section 31 fees are assessed to it and passed through to customers. It reported cash-equity trading revenue net of transaction-based expenses of $515 million. These are Nasdaq’s 2025 figures, in U.S. dollars, not an industry-wide fee pattern. Nasdaq 2025 Form 10-K

Clearing and post-trade services
Clearing happens after a trade is agreed. Depending on the arrangement, clearing services can validate obligations, manage exposures, and process a transaction toward settlement. An exchange venue and a clearing house are not necessarily the same operation, and not every exchange operator clears every trade.
Companies also classify these services differently. CME Group combines clearing with transaction and platform charges in its principal fee category. It says that category includes trade matching, clearing, electronic-platform trading, portfolio reconciliation and compression, and risk mitigation. Most of its fee revenue is recognized when a trade is successfully executed; a smaller settlement-related portion is recognized over the contract’s short lifecycle. Its cash-markets description also notes that trades may be completed bilaterally or through a third-party clearing house. CME Group 2025 Form 10-K

Market data and information services
Operators can sell information generated by their markets, including quotes, prices, order-book details, trades, summaries, and historical data. Customers may buy directly from the exchange group or receive data through distributors and resellers. Subscriptions, licenses, connectivity, and distribution arrangements can all be part of the model; pricing depends on the product, customer, permitted use, and agreement.
CME describes real-time, delayed, and end-of-day data services. Its 2024 filing says its basic real-time quote service charges a flat monthly fee for each screen or device displaying quotes. That is a description of that particular service, not a universal pricing rule for all market data or customers. ICE’s 2025 filing describes exchange data products that include proprietary real-time and historical pricing, order-book, and transaction information. CME Group 2024 Form 10-K ICE 2025 Form 10-K

What the revenue figures show
CME Group’s 2025 Form 10-K reports the following revenue for the years ended December 31. Amounts are in millions of U.S. dollars. The 2024 figures are included as a historical comparison, not as the latest year.
| Revenue category | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Clearing and transaction fees | $5,281.1 million | $4,988.2 million |
| Market data and information services | $803.1 million | $710.2 million |
| Other | $436.4 million | $431.7 million |
| Total revenue | $6,520.6 million | $6,130.1 million |
These figures illustrate CME’s own reported mix; they are not typical ratios for every exchange operator. In particular, the largest category combines several activities rather than representing only fees for executing trades. CME Group 2025 Form 10-K

Why exchange revenue is hard to compare
- Different business scope: One group may operate cash-equity and derivatives venues, clearing operations, listings, technology, connectivity, or data businesses; another may have a different mix.
- Different accounting presentation: Some filings show rebates and transaction-related expenses separately, while others present exchange transaction and clearing revenue net of rebates. Gross and net figures are not directly interchangeable.
- Different fee drivers: Per-contract fees, notional-value charges, transaction counts, volume, product mix, and customer rates can all affect revenue.
- Different reporting categories: A line called “clearing and transaction” may contain platform or other post-trade services, not just execution charges. A data category may likewise include several products and distribution arrangements.
Cboe’s 2025 filing, for example, reports transaction and clearing, data-vantage, and routing-and-clearing categories. CME reports an “other” category, while ICE describes data and connectivity services related to its venues. Company names can therefore refer to diversified market-infrastructure groups rather than a single stock exchange. Cboe 2025 Form 10-K ICE 2025 Form 10-K
For a meaningful comparison, use the same fiscal year and check the companies’ business scope, revenue categories, fee drivers, treatment of rebates and pass-through charges, and data distribution models. A raw total-revenue comparison can obscure those differences.

Other services contribute too
Trading, clearing, and data are important revenue sources, but they do not exhaust the possible business lines. Exchange groups may also earn money from listings, technology, connectivity, routing, and other operational services. Which of these appears as a separate reported category depends on the company.
