Everlogue’s Reading Companion separates book discovery from factual answers: it selects recommendations from a structured catalog, then uses retrieved source material to answer questions about books. That distinction is the core of the project described by creator Sophia Castillo—not an independently audited assessment of the live app.
What Everlogue’s Reading Companion does
Everlogue combines a shared book catalog, private reading shelves, celebrity book-club selections and a conversational assistant called Ask Everlogue. Its catalog began with titles selected by Reese’s Book Club, Oprah’s Book Club, Read with Jenna and GMA Book Club. Readers can also import Goodreads shelves or request that a missing book be reviewed for inclusion.

The companion is designed around prompts such as, “What are you in the mood for—or what’s a book you loved and want something similar to?” Castillo says it searches the approved catalog, may include suitable Want to Read titles, and excludes titles a signed-in reader has already read or is currently reading. It returns three recommendations with brief, personal, spoiler-free explanations. These are the creator’s descriptions of intended behavior, not verified results from an independent test.
Two answer modes use different sources
The important architectural choice is that recommending a title and explaining facts about it are separate jobs. Everlogue’s catalog controls which books can be recommended; a retrieved knowledge base is intended to support factual discussion.
#1 Best Overall
| Mode | What it uses | Useful for | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog recommendation | Approved structured book records and reader shelf context | Mood-based discovery or finding a book similar to one the reader enjoyed | A candidate must be in the catalog and meet the eligibility rules Castillo describes. |
| Knowledge-base answer | Retrieved, indexed source material | Questions about a book’s premise, themes, book-club selection or author conversation | Factual answers depend on relevant retrieved material; the knowledge base is not described as covering every catalog title. |
Recommendations query Sanity directly through GROQ using @sanity/client. Catalog descriptions and genres can help inform a recommendation even if a title has no linked article. Conversely, a factual answer can draw on a retrieved article, but that does not make the article a prerequisite for recommending the book.
How retrieved knowledge supports book answers
Castillo says the knowledge base was seeded with six website sources, including book-club announcements, summaries and author interviews. She reports reviewing the material, checking citations and correcting it. The agent’s stated instructions require retrieval before answering, source support for factual claims and avoidance of unnecessary spoilers. Those are design rules reported by the creator, not a published accuracy study.

Sanity describes Sanity Context as a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives agents schema-aware, read-only access to Sanity content. Depending on configuration, it can expose live dataset content or prepared knowledge-base material, with tools for initial context, schema exploration, GROQ queries and reading larger fields. Context provides access to content; it does not run the agent loop, make recommendations on its own or write to the dataset. The application and its agent orchestrate the interaction. See Sanity’s Agent Context documentation.

How titles reach the shared catalog
A recommendation boundary is only useful if there is a process for expanding the catalog. Castillo describes several entry routes, each with review between discovery and publication.

- Missing-title requests: A search for an absent book can become a request for review rather than an automatic catalog addition.
- Book-club discovery: Book Club Watch monitors announcements from Reese’s Book Club, GMA Book Club, Read With Jenna and Oprah’s Book Club. Castillo says separate scheduled Sanity Functions handle the clubs because their announcement patterns differ.
A discovered title becomes a structured review record; editorial approval is what permits publication. Castillo’s concise principle is: “A title extracted from a webpage is evidence, not editorial truth.” The workflow makes human approval a gate, rather than treating a scraped announcement as sufficient authority to publish a catalog entry.
What the Sanity access boundary means
Sanity’s documentation recommends deliberately limiting what an agent can read. Context uses a read token, and a GROQ filter can constrain the documents exposed to it. The token should stay server-side. Castillo says Everlogue’s production dataset is private and that its Context endpoint uses a server-side token with Viewer permission. That description does not establish that the setup has undergone an independent security audit.

This distinction matters because the project includes reader information as well as book content. Read-only access limits the Context endpoint’s ability to alter dataset records, while document scoping limits what it can retrieve. Neither fact alone establishes the security of the full application, its other services or its handling of personal data.
What the project evidence does—and does not—show
The project submissions describe a coherent implementation pattern: structured records determine the candidate set, reader shelves help personalize eligibility, and retrieved sources are intended to ground factual discussion. They do not establish recommendation quality through user outcomes, a controlled comparison or an independently published evaluation.
Best Value
Castillo also reported an estimated combined model cost of about $0.015 for two live test questions. That is a creator-reported figure for a two-question sample, not a general cost per user, benchmark or forecast. It should not be used to infer the operating cost of a larger service.
For readers, the practical trade-off is legibility: the companion is described as recommending within a known catalog instead of freely inventing candidates, while factual answers depend on what the separate knowledge base can retrieve. A title can still be recommendable without an associated article; an answer about that title is only as well supported as the relevant retrieved material.
