For a solo Ethereum validator, getting staked ETH back is a three-stage process: the exit queue assigns an exit epoch, a further 256 epochs (about 27.3 hours) pass before the validator becomes withdrawable, and an automatic protocol sweep sends eligible funds to its withdrawal address. The total wait varies: queue time and sweep time are separate and neither has a guaranteed duration.
What happens when a solo validator exits?
A voluntary exit does not send ETH immediately. It starts a protocol process, and the validator remains active while waiting for its assigned exit epoch. During that time it is still expected to perform its duties and remains subject to slashing rules. Ethereum’s Staking Launchpad warns: “Do not turn your validator off until this epoch is reached.” After the exit epoch, the validator is no longer active and stops earning rewards. Ethereum.org’s staking withdrawal guide was updated August 17, 2026; the Staking Launchpad explains the epoch and sweep process.

Initiate the exit
A solo validator can sign and broadcast a voluntary exit message with its validator keys. This does not require gas. Ethereum also documents an execution-layer-triggered exit using withdrawal credentials; that route requires an on-chain transaction and gas. The protocol then assigns an exit epoch according to available exit capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWait until the validator is withdrawable
After the exit epoch, the validator must wait 256 epochs before it becomes withdrawable. The Launchpad gives this interval as about 27.3 hours. This is a post-exit delay, not the queue time before the exit epoch.

Let the sweep send the funds
When a validator is eligible and has valid execution-layer withdrawal credentials, the protocol’s automatic sweep sends the full withdrawal to the designated address. For a normal full exit, you generally wait for that sweep rather than submit a separate claim transaction. The automatic sweep itself does not require you to pay gas.
How long does it take to withdraw staked ETH?
There is no fixed total wait. Think of it as three durations added together: the time to reach the assigned exit epoch, the 256-epoch delay after that epoch, and the time until the sweep reaches the validator. The first depends on queued exits and network exit capacity. The last depends on sweep position, the validator population, eligible withdrawals, and missed slots.

The Launchpad describes a sweep that can check up to 16,384 validator accounts and process up to 16 eligible withdrawals per block. Its published examples estimate sweep duration—not exit-queue duration—under its stated assumptions:

These are capacity illustrations from the Ethereum Staking Launchpad, accessed October 7, 2026—not a prediction for an individual validator or a measure of how long the exit queue will take. Queue conditions change, so a wait estimate seen at one moment may no longer apply when you initiate an exit.

Do you have to claim ETH after exiting?
For a solo validator with a valid execution-layer withdrawal address, a full withdrawal is sent automatically once the validator is withdrawable and reached by the sweep. You do not normally need to make a second claim transaction. The key condition is the withdrawal credential: legacy 0x00 credentials do not include an execution-layer address and must be upgraded to 0x01 or 0x02 before funds can be delivered.

Withdrawal credentials determine where funds go and how rewards above the validator’s effective balance are handled. Choose the destination carefully: Ethereum.org says each validator can be assigned one withdrawal address once, and the address cannot be changed after submission to the consensus layer. Its withdrawal credentials guide was updated January 22, 2026.

| Credential | Effect on withdrawals |
|---|---|
| 0x00 | Legacy format without an execution-layer withdrawal address; upgrade to 0x01 or 0x02 before withdrawals can be delivered. |
| 0x01 | Automatically sweeps balance above the 32 ETH effective-balance ceiling to the withdrawal address. |
| 0x02 | Supports compounding in 1 ETH increments up to a 2048 ETH maximum effective balance; automatic sweeps generally occur above that threshold. Some partial withdrawals below it require a manually submitted execution-layer transaction and gas. |
Conversion from 0x01 to 0x02 is irreversible. The distinction matters if you expect to withdraw only rewards rather than exit fully: the credential determines whether an eligible excess is swept automatically or whether a particular partial withdrawal requires an on-chain action.

If you stake through a pool or hold a liquid-staking token, you generally do not initiate the underlying validator’s protocol withdrawal yourself. The provider or pool controls validator credentials. You typically redeem through its process, subject to its liquidity and terms, or sell the token on a market. That provider redemption wait is not necessarily the Ethereum solo-validator exit queue.
Ethereum.org’s liquid and pooled staking overview says Pectra introduced execution-layer-triggered withdrawals for pools, allowing exits from a withdrawal address without relying on node operators’ signing keys. This is a protocol capability; it does not mean all providers offer the same redemption method, liquidity, or timing. The relevant questions for a pool are who controls keys and withdrawal credentials, which queue or redemption process governs your wait, and whether you receive ETH directly or redeem or sell a token.
What may change the exit queue
Exit capacity and queue conditions determine how long it takes to reach an exit epoch. Ethereum’s Glamsterdam page describes a roadmap proposal intended to increase exit capacity and reduce withdrawal times; it is a proposal, not a reason to assume those changes are already active. See Ethereum.org’s Glamsterdam roadmap for its status.
