Enterprise data teams can use agentic AI analytics to make governed data easier to query, connect insights across supported sources, monitor live conditions, coordinate repeatable workflows, and measure how AI agents are being used. The key distinction is that an analytics agent may only answer questions, while a separate monitoring or orchestration layer may recommend or trigger actions.
What counts as agentic AI analytics?
In an enterprise data setting, an agent can interpret a request, select relevant data or tools, and return an answer or carry out a step in a workflow. Those capabilities do not automatically come together in one product. Some data agents are designed to generate read-only queries; monitoring agents and workflow services can watch for conditions and act under separate permissions and controls.

That difference matters when evaluating risk. An answer-generating agent can still misunderstand a request or return an unreliable result. An action-taking system adds the possibility of an incorrect or premature response being executed. Treat vendor descriptions as descriptions of product capabilities, not independent proof of accuracy or business impact.
Five use cases for enterprise data teams
1. Governed natural-language self-service
Business analysts and other nontechnical users can ask questions in plain language instead of writing every query themselves. Microsoft describes Fabric data agents that can query lakehouses, warehouses, Power BI semantic models, and KQL databases. The agent can use underlying source access controls and applicable governance policies, so a user sees results permitted by their access rather than gaining access simply by asking a question.

This can reduce the friction of finding and querying data, but it does not make every answer correct. Users should be able to inspect the data and definitions behind important results, and teams should establish when an analyst must validate an answer before using it in a decision.
2. Analysis across supported sources and clouds
A natural-language interface can help users ask questions that involve more than one data source. Microsoft describes Fabric agents selecting among OneLake sources and semantic models. Google Cloud’s June 15, 2026 announcement describes Conversational Analytics in Lakehouse for querying distributed data lakes across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
These are not promises of universal connectivity. The available source types and configuration determine what an agent can reach, and Google marked the cross-cloud Lakehouse capability as preview in that announcement. Before designing a workflow around it, confirm the supported sources and the capability’s availability for your organization.

3. Operational monitoring and follow-up
Analytics can also feed a process that watches for a business condition and recommends or triggers a response—for example, notifying an owner when a monitored metric crosses a threshold. In Microsoft’s Fabric terminology, a Data Agent is read-only; Operations Agents monitor real-time streams and can recommend or trigger actions through services such as Activator and Power Automate. The Fabric data agent itself does not write data or launch those actions.
Keep the analysis step and the action step explicit in the design. Specify what condition starts a response, which system is allowed to act, who approves consequential actions, and how the team can review what happened. An alert or recommendation may be appropriate where automatic execution is not.
4. Multistep ingestion and reporting workflows
Repeatable data work often requires several components rather than one autonomous analytics product. AWS describes patterns for multistep tasks such as data ingestion and reporting, combining Amazon Bedrock with orchestration services such as Step Functions or EventBridge, Lambda functions, and state stores.

In this pattern, agents can help interpret or perform bounded tasks, while conventional services coordinate steps, preserve state, and handle triggers. It is an architecture approach, not a turnkey capability guaranteed in every analytics platform. Teams should define the workflow’s inputs, handoffs, retry behavior, and human review points rather than assuming an agent can safely manage the entire process on its own.

Organizations can analyze agent-use telemetry to see which departments use agents, which teams build them, where safety or compliance alerts arise, and whether use appears to save employee time. Google Cloud’s BigQuery guidance describes examples including department-level usage analysis, estimating employee hours using HR or business data, auditing grounding queries, and investigating Model Armor alerts.
Telemetry can show patterns, but it does not by itself prove that an agent caused a productivity gain. A time-saved estimate depends on the baseline, the way activity is measured, and whether the underlying business data supports the calculation. Treat value figures as estimates unless the measurement design supports a stronger conclusion.

How to assess an agent before deployment
Use these questions to compare a proposed agent or architecture with the job it is meant to do:
| Decision area | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Data grounding | Which structured sources, semantic models, business definitions, and cloud environments can it access? Are the definitions users rely on represented consistently? |
| Autonomy | Does it only read and explain, or can another agent or workflow trigger an action? Which actions require a person’s approval? |
| Governance | Are user entitlements, row- and column-level restrictions, sensitivity policies, and outbound access boundaries enforced across the full workflow? |
| Maturity | Is the specific capability generally available, in preview, or limited to select customers? What capacity, license, region, or tenant conditions apply? |
| Operations | Can the team inspect query behavior, version instructions, promote configuration through environments, and assign lifecycle ownership? |

Do not use an answer agent as a substitute for causal analysis
Microsoft’s “Privacy, security, and responsible use of Copilot in notebooks and Fabric data agents” guidance says Fabric data agents are not intended for deep or causal analytics, or uses requiring deterministic 100% accuracy. It gives “why did the sales numbers drop last month?” as an example of a causal question outside the agent’s intended scope. Use conventional investigation and human review for consequential causal conclusions.

Check permissions, licensing, and output handling
Microsoft’s Fabric data agent documentation says applicable Purview controls and source access restrictions apply. Publishing an agent through Microsoft 365 Copilot has documented Fabric capacity and user licensing conditions; users see results permitted by their access, including row- and column-level security. Microsoft marks the M365 Copilot consumption experience as preview and warns that Copilot’s orchestrator can reshape the agent’s returned output. Validate critical results at the point users receive them.

Confirm retention and availability in your environment
Microsoft states that Fabric data agent conversation history is stored within the Azure security boundary and retained for 28 days unless a user deletes it earlier by clearing chat. Confirm current retention and regional settings against your organization’s requirements. Product maturity, licensing, and configuration can change; in particular, Google’s June 15, 2026 announcement marks both BigQuery agentic workflows for root-cause analysis and scheduled actions, and cross-cloud Lakehouse conversational analytics, as preview for select customers.
Assign lifecycle ownership
A production agent needs owners for its design, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance—not just a team that builds the initial prompt or workflow. AWS guidance recommends cross-functional AgentOps teams spanning AI/ML, domain expertise, architecture, engineering, product, compliance, and platform roles, with lifecycle responsibility that includes retraining and monitoring. Adapt the ownership model to the system’s actual components and risks.
Where agentic analytics fits best
Agentic analytics is most useful when it removes a specific bottleneck—such as querying governed data, coordinating bounded workflow steps, or routing a monitored condition to the right owner. Choose the system’s autonomy to match the consequences of failure: a read-only answer, a recommendation for human review, or an approved workflow action. For causal conclusions or decisions that require guaranteed correctness, keep established analytical methods and accountable human judgment in the loop.
