How Embedded Teams Can Trace Device Failures at Runtime

A useful embedded audit trail links events and measurements to the operation and device that produced them. Learn how instrumentation, correlation, and target validation fit together.

To understand what happened inside an embedded device, connect its events and measurements to both the operation in progress and the device that produced them. That takes deliberate instrumentation, useful timestamps and identity, and a way to correlate logs, metrics, and traces. OpenTelemetry provides APIs, SDKs, conventions, and collection components for that work; it does not provide the storage or visualization backend.

What runtime observability tells an embedded team

A field failure can leave an incomplete record: an event may have a timestamp but no clear device identity, or a log line may describe an error without showing which operation led to it. Observability is the practice of understanding a system’s internal state through its outputs. OpenTelemetry’s documentation defines it as “the ability to understand the internal state of a system by examining its outputs.” OpenTelemetry: What is OpenTelemetry?

For embedded software, those outputs need enough context to help answer practical questions: what occurred, where in an operation it occurred, and which device or process emitted the information. A pile of unconnected records is not an audit trail.

  • Traces show the path of a request or operation through software. They help locate where an operation stalled or failed, when trace context is propagated across its steps.
  • Metrics record measurements over time. They can help reveal changes in a runtime or system, but their meaning depends on what is being measured and how the target defines it.
  • Logs capture events, such as an error or a state transition. They are most useful when the event can be tied to its time, operation context, and producing entity.
  • Baggage carries context across parts of a distributed system. Whether it is useful in a given embedded architecture depends on how operations and components communicate.

The signals overview describes events and profiles as under development or proposal; the profiles page labels profiles Alpha. These maturity labels can change, so consult the current documentation before adopting them as a design dependency. OpenTelemetry profiles

How can logs, metrics, and traces be correlated?

Correlation gives separate telemetry records a shared context. OpenTelemetry’s logging guidance describes connecting logs with time, execution context such as trace and span IDs, and resource context. OpenTelemetry Logs specification

When a log is emitted during a traced operation, trace and span IDs can help a team move from the event to the relevant operation path. Resource attributes identify the entity producing telemetry and help users pivot between signals from that source. OpenTelemetry Resources

Legacy logs may not contain trace context. Where the application controls log emission, enrich records with available trace/span and resource context. If propagation is not possible in part of the system, preserve the context that is available rather than implying that every record can be linked to a trace.

Choose resource attributes that identify the product and deployment appropriately. Cloud-oriented defaults should not be assumed to identify a physical device adequately; the identifier set should reflect the system, privacy requirements, and storage constraints.

What should you instrument to diagnose a field failure?

Start with failure-relevant questions, not a goal of collecting everything. Select events, operation boundaries, and measurements that would distinguish likely failure modes. Runtime measurements are not automatically comparable between platforms: OpenTelemetry’s runtime semantic conventions note that runtimes differ in terminology and metric meanings, and do not define a universal set of top-level runtime instruments. The conventions are marked Development. OpenTelemetry runtime metrics semantic conventions

Use names and interpretations that make sense for the actual runtime. For each record, decide what timestamp and producer identity are needed to establish its origin. For operations that span components, propagate trace context where the architecture permits; include that context in logs when possible.

Code-based or zero-code instrumentation?

Instrumentation is necessary before runtime behavior can be inspected. OpenTelemetry distinguishes code-based instrumentation from zero-code approaches. Code instrumentation can provide deeper insight into application behavior; zero-code instrumentation can expose libraries or environments without changing application code, which can be useful for an initial view or when application code cannot be modified. OpenTelemetry instrumentation

For embedded systems, that distinction is a design choice rather than a guarantee of coverage. OpenTelemetry C++ lists traces, metrics, and logs as Stable components, but that status does not establish compatibility with every microcontroller, RTOS, compiler, SDK, or transport. Its instrumentation guidance says automatic instrumentation is not supported when the source code for the library to be instrumented is unavailable. How does telemetry reach a backend?

OpenTelemetry can generate, collect, and export telemetry, but teams use other tools for storage and visualization. The OpenTelemetry Collector can receive, process, and forward telemetry to backends. OpenTelemetry Collector

For a particular device, determine how telemetry leaves the target and what happens when the connection is unavailable. Buffering, sampling, retention, and export behavior depend on the product’s requirements and implementation. The Collector’s official quick start is explicitly a local demonstration, not production-ready deployment guidance. OpenTelemetry Collector quick start

A practical sequence for building the audit trail

  1. Choose failure-relevant signals. Identify a small set of events, operation boundaries, and runtime measurements that can answer the questions engineers expect to face.
  2. Attach origin and time. Ensure emitted records have timestamps and resource identity sufficient to distinguish the producing device or process.
  3. Connect operation context. Propagate trace context where the software architecture allows it, and enrich logs with trace/span and resource context when available.
  4. Verify navigation across signals. Export telemetry through the chosen pipeline and confirm that engineers can move among relevant logs, metrics, and traces in the selected backend.
  5. Validate on the actual target. Measure the effects on the device and transport, then set buffering, sampling, retention, and privacy policies to match system requirements.

General C++ support does not establish that a particular build fits a device’s memory, CPU, energy, or transport budget. Those costs—and behavior during disconnection—must be evaluated for the target, SDK, and deployment rather than inferred from platform-neutral documentation.
