The best-supported examples show how rumbles can help bonded females stay in contact and can play a role in attracting mates. This is a specialized, multisensory communication system—not evidence that elephant calls translate into human-like words or grammar. A fair comparison with people and great apes must distinguish what each source actually establishes rather than rank three groups on one scale.
What makes elephant communication different?
The clearest difference is that elephant communication is not centered on audible sound alone. Elephants use acoustic signals, including low-frequency vocal calls, and can detect seismic information carried through the ground. Scholarly coverage also describes chemical, visual, and tactile channels. These signals operate in social settings: who is signaling, who is nearby, and the relationship between them can matter as much as the signal’s physical form.

That is a different emphasis from the everyday human use of spoken and written languages, where people commonly coordinate through learned vocabularies and conventional grammar. The contrast is about the best-documented channels and functions in the material considered here, not a claim that humans never communicate through other senses or that elephants have no learned social behavior. Nor does it place elephants and apes on a single ladder of communicative ability.

What do elephant rumbles do?
Contact between separated animals
African elephant rumbles are low-frequency vocalizations. A 2010 review by Joseph Soltis describes rumbles as common and variable, and reports evidence that closely bonded females separated from one another exchange contact calls. Those calls may help coordinate movement or bring the animals back together. The evidence supports a social function; it does not provide a word-for-word translation of what any particular rumble “says.”
In that same review, elephants are reported to respond to rumbles at distances of up to 2.5 km. This is a reported response distance, not a guaranteed communication radius for every call, animal, or habitat. Sound transmission and detection depend on conditions, so the figure should not be treated as a universal range.
Mate attraction
The review also identifies mate-attraction rumbles produced by males and females. Rumble structure may carry information associated with the caller’s identity and aspects of reproductive or emotional state. These are supported functions and interpretations of call structure—not evidence for a fixed catalogue in which each acoustic pattern maps neatly to a human word.
How many call types are there?
Soltis’s review describes perhaps nine acoustically distinct call types in the African elephant vocal repertoire it surveys. “Perhaps” matters: this is an estimate from a review of African elephant vocal behavior, not a definitive count for every elephant population or a count of all signals across every sensory channel. Rumbles are especially common and variable within that vocal repertoire.

Can elephants communicate through the ground?
Elephants can detect seismic information: vibrations associated with sound or other events that travel through the ground. Low-frequency calls can couple into the ground, and a 2007 review by Caitlin E. O’Connell-Rodwell summarizes behavioral evidence that elephants detect seismic cues. Playback work summarized in the review indicates that elephants can discriminate callers or call types using seismic information.
That finding supports the basic claim that elephants sense ground-borne cues. It should be separated from stronger claims about exactly how the animals receive those cues, what a particular vibration means to them, or how routinely a specific signal communicates over long distances. The mechanisms and communication role of seismic components are more qualified than the behavioral evidence for detection. In other words, “elephants can detect seismic information” is better supported than a confident claim that a particular rumble has a precisely decoded seismic message.
Sound and seismic vibration are related but not interchangeable. A vocalization may produce both airborne sound and ground vibration, while the animal’s response to a playback can show discrimination without, by itself, revealing the full meaning or ordinary use of the signal. That distinction is useful whenever a description moves from sensing to communication: evidence that an animal detects a cue is not automatically evidence for a complete signaling code.
How do the different channels fit together?
A Cambridge University Press chapter summary in Elephants: Behavior and Conservation covers chemical, vibrational, visual, and tactile communication alongside cognition and social life. Taken with the acoustic evidence, this shows why it is misleading to describe elephant communication as simply “infrasound.” Low-frequency sound is a major and well-studied component, but it does not exhaust the ways elephants can signal or perceive one another.

In a multisensory system, a receiver may encounter more than one kind of cue, and interpretation can depend on context and relationship. A rumble exchanged by bonded females has a different likely social role from a mate-attraction rumble, even though both are rumbles. The useful question is therefore not only “What sound was made?” but also “What channel carried it, who was involved, and what function is supported by the evidence?”
Social learning and culture also appear in the broader scholarly framing of elephant cognition and communication. That context does not mean every signal is taught, or that every signal has a conventional meaning shared in the way words do. It cautions against treating calls as isolated noises detached from the social lives in which they occur.
How does this compare with human communication?
People commonly use learned spoken and written languages with productive vocabularies and conventional grammar. The sources considered here do not provide a direct technical comparison that measures human language, elephant signaling, and great-ape communication using the same criteria. A useful broad contrast is that the elephant material emphasizes low-frequency calls, seismic detection, and multiple sensory channels, while human everyday coordination is strongly language-centered.

This contrast should not be mistaken for an exhaustive account of human communication. People also use gesture, touch, facial expression, and other nonverbal cues. The point is narrower: human language gives people a highly conventional system for combining words and grammar, whereas the elephant evidence discussed here establishes particular signal functions and sensory capacities without demonstrating an equivalent word-and-grammar system.

That difference changes what it means to ask whether a rumble “means something like a word.” The evidence supports calls with functions such as contact and mate attraction, and suggests that call structure may reveal information about a caller. It does not establish a translation dictionary, human-style names, or grammar. Meaningful communication does not have to be human language to be socially important.
What can—and can’t—be concluded about great apes?
The available material supports a cautious, high-level comparison rather than a detailed account of great-ape signaling. Don Kulick’s 2017 Annual Review of Anthropology article documents the history of attempts to teach human language to apes and the wider ethical and conceptual debate about human–animal communication. That scholarship is relevant context, but it is not, on its own, a technical survey of ape communication mechanisms or a basis for broad claims about all ape species.
Accordingly, this comparison cannot responsibly rank elephants, great apes, and humans by syntax, gesture, vocal learning, or intentionality. The sources here do not establish enough directly comparable great-ape evidence to make those judgments. The history of attempts to teach apes human language should not be turned into the claim that ape communication is simple; equally, elephant vocal learning research should not be inflated into proof that elephants use human-like language.

How to assess claims about elephant “language”
When a claim says elephants have words, names, or a hidden language, ask what evidence it offers. A strong account should distinguish an observed vocal pattern from a proposed function, and a proposed function from a translation. For example, evidence that separated bonded females use contact calls supports a role in maintaining contact; it does not show that researchers can translate each call into a sentence.
- Identify the channel. Is the claim about airborne sound, ground vibration, or another sensory cue?
- Separate detection from interpretation. Evidence that elephants distinguish seismic cues does not by itself reveal the exact meaning of those cues.
- Check the social context. Contact and mate-attraction are distinct functions, even when both involve rumbles.
- Keep the scope attached to the number. “Perhaps nine” refers to call types in a reviewed African elephant repertoire; “up to 2.5 km” is a response distance reported in a review, not an all-conditions range.
- Look for direct comparison before ranking species. The sources summarized here do not offer a common test of human, great-ape, and elephant communication across syntax or intentionality.
What research still needs to clarify
A 2014 review of elephant vocal learning describes the field as still early in understanding the context and function of vocal learning and its neural processing. That is a reason to keep claims precise: evidence of vocal learning or complex call use does not settle whether elephant signals have human-like linguistic structure.
Further work that connects signal production, perception, social context, and neural processing can sharpen what researchers know about how elephants use calls. Seismic research also benefits from separating the well-supported behavioral result—detection and discrimination—from more uncertain explanations of mechanism and routine communication range. These are open scientific questions, not reasons to dismiss the communication abilities already documented.

The most defensible picture is therefore neither that elephants are “talking like people” nor that their signals are mere noise. Elephants use a rich, socially embedded signaling system whose strongest evidence here concerns low-frequency vocal calls, contact and mate-attraction functions, and detection of seismic information. Human language and great-ape communication raise related but distinct questions, and the available sources do not justify collapsing them into one scale.
