An electrolyser can be designed to convert carbon dioxide from a mixed flue-gas stream without first separating it into pure CO₂. It does not necessarily extract CO₂ as a gas: instead, the cell is designed so CO₂ reacts at an electrode while other gases are less involved in the desired reaction. Dilution, competing reactions and catalyst sensitivity make that difficult, and the studies available show research results—not widespread commercial deployment.
What it means to electrolyse unpurified flue gas
Flue gas is a mixture, not a stream of pure CO₂. Depending on its source and treatment, it can include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. In direct gas-fed electrochemical conversion, the mixed gas reaches an electrode, and electrical energy drives reactions that transform some of its CO₂ into products.

“Selective” describes which reaction the cell favors; it does not mean the device has necessarily separated pure CO₂ from the other gases. A 2020 Chemistry World report described University of Toronto researchers led by David Sinton converting CO₂ from simulated flue gas into ethylene and ethanol. That report is coverage of a research result, not evidence of an industrial plant operating on untreated emissions.

CO₂ is diluted
Nitrogen and other gases lower the CO₂ partial pressure—the share of the gas mixture attributable to CO₂. That leaves less CO₂ available at the reaction interface and can make it harder to sustain conversion. A 2023 Applied Energy study identifies low CO₂ partial pressure as a central challenge in its multicomponent flue-gas system.

Other reactions compete
Oxygen can undergo reduction, while hydrogen evolution can divert current from CO₂ conversion. The balance depends on operating conditions and the cell design, so the same feed composition need not produce the same selectivity with every catalyst or electrode.
Impurities can affect catalysts differently
Industrial gases may contain sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides or carbon monoxide as well as oxygen and nitrogen. Their effects are not interchangeable: a gas can compete in the cell or affect catalyst performance, and the result depends on the impurity, its concentration and the materials and operating conditions used. The 2024 Nano Energy study, for example, examined impurity and dilution effects for a particular Ni-N-C catalyst and discussed sulfur-related degradation.

What researchers have tried
Pressure and temperature in a modeled direct-gas system
The 2023 Applied Energy study by Di Tian, Zhiguo Qu and Jianfei Zhang analyzed direct electroreduction in a multicomponent flue-gas system, including the influence of potential, temperature, pressure and competing reactions. For its proposed Cu-based system, it reported 71% CO₂-reduction selectivity and a current density of −148 mA/cm² at −1.17 V versus RHE, with a 273 K inlet-electrolyte temperature and an operating pressure of 20 atm. These are study-specific results, not general performance figures for electrolysers; the paper also included techno-economic modeling, which does not establish commercial profitability.

A catalyst studied with impurities and dilution
The 2024 Nano Energy paper reported 92% CO₂-reduction selectivity for its Ni-N-C catalyst under the impurity and dilution conditions it studied. It also discussed high-speed cyclic scouring as a way to alleviate sulfur-related degradation. Neither the selectivity result nor the proposed mitigation should be treated as a guarantee for other catalysts, gas mixtures or operating systems.

A simulated-flue-gas demonstration with chemical products
The 2020 Chemistry World account of the University of Toronto work describes selective conversion of CO₂ from simulated flue gas into ethylene and ethanol, with pressure and catalyst design used to address competing reactions. Simulated flue gas is not the same as demonstrating sustained operation on every real industrial exhaust stream.
A different route: capture CO₂ into bicarbonate first
Not every system described as flue-gas capture and conversion feeds the gas directly to a gas-fed reduction electrode. In a bicarbonate-mediated design, a basified liquid electrolyte first captures CO₂, producing bicarbonate, and the captured carbon is then electrochemically converted. This combines capture and conversion, but it is a different feed architecture from direct gas-fed reduction.

A Small paper by Ye-Bin Zou and colleagues, first published in 2025 and appearing in the 2026 volume, reported a simultaneous capture-and-conversion system using a nickel single-atom catalyst. For that specific laboratory system, the paper reported at least 120 hours of stable operation, 60% CO₂ capture/utilization efficiency, more than 20,000 mL of syngas with an H₂/CO ratio of about 3, and 25% lower energy use than the sequential route used as its comparator. Those figures describe that system and comparison; they are not benchmarks for direct gas-fed electrolysis or for all flue-gas conversion.

The percentages in these studies measure different things under different system boundaries and conditions. They should not be ranked as if they were a single head-to-head test. For a meaningful comparison, check the feed architecture and gas composition, the product and definition of selectivity, operating voltage, current density, pressure and temperature, stability duration, and what processes are included in any energy or cost comparison.

Is this ready for industrial use?
The cited work establishes experimental and modeled approaches, not broad commercial deployment. Industrial readiness would depend on more than a high selectivity figure: gas delivery, tolerance to the actual exhaust composition, catalyst and electrode durability, sustained operation, product separation and whole-system energy and cost all matter. The available sources do not establish a commercial deployment rate, plant-scale performance, emissions reduction or cost saving for this technology.
