A specially prepared surface—not droplets defying gravity on their own—can direct liquid drops uphill and even upside down. A 2019 report described the surface as fluorinated porous silicon dioxide, treated to repel both water and oil. Water applied in a controlled pattern was used to program paths for droplets, though the proposed molecular explanation was still under debate.
How can droplets move uphill and upside down?
The surface supplies the conditions for the motion. Chemistry World reported that researchers from China and Germany made a superamphiphobic surface from fluorinated porous silicon dioxide. “Superamphiphobic” means it repels both water and oil. The researchers used water droplets applied from increasing heights to program the surface.

The authors proposed that the water created negatively charged defects in the silicon oxide. Those charges would form a gradient in surface charge density, helping propel and steer droplets. The molecular mechanism, however, was still under debate in the 2019 report. The precise microscopic process should therefore be treated as a proposed explanation, not a settled account.

What did the researchers make the droplets do?
The report described water, blood, glycerol, and aniline droplets moving in circles, across flexible surfaces, up vertical slopes, and upside down. These routes were guided by the specially prepared surface; the droplets were not moving without an external surface or escaping gravity through a general property of liquids.

- CERAMIC COATING FOR CARS: Delivers an extremely glossy, mirror-like finish on clean paint. Use as a standalone paint sealant or as a quick ceramic topper that deepens color and adds slickness. Not a one-step miracle coating and not a paint corrector
- 50-WASH CERAMIC PROTECTION: A true ceramic paint sealant, tested to a 50-wash durability rating for months of protection. Seals and shields your paint so it stays slick and beads water long after ordinary spray waxes have washed off
- CERAMIC SPRAY WAX ALTERNATIVE, QUICK AND EASY: Wash and dry first, then spray a thin, even coat onto one panel at a time and buff immediately. A thin, even coat ensures optimal bonding and maximum gloss
- EXTREMELY HYDROPHOBIC: True ceramic technology repels water, road grime, mud, and dirt, so your car stays cleaner between washes and rinses clean faster. Use on cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, boats, and motorcycles
- ULTRA SLICK SURFACE: An extremely smooth finish that is safe for all paint colors and clear coats, so the surface stays slick to the touch and dirt has less to grab onto between washes
In one reported pattern, alternating patches with and without a charge gradient let droplets travel distances almost 100 times their own diameter. Chemistry World also reported speeds 10 times higher than those of drops propelled by the Leidenfrost effect. Those comparisons are secondary-source summaries; the report does not establish the detailed measurement conditions or definitions needed to interpret them more precisely. Chemistry World’s 2019 report identifies the underlying study as Q Sun et al., Nature Materials (2019), DOI 10.1038/s41563-019-0440-2.
Could the surface power a device?
The team also demonstrated a small cargo-carrying device: a plastic sheet balanced on four droplets acting as wheels. According to the report, it moved across the surface without additional energy input. That is a research demonstration, not evidence of a ready-to-buy transport system.

- EFFORTLESS CLEANING -- Lifeproof Home Ceramic Coating prevents stains, smudges, fingerprints, water-spotting, soap-scum build-up, mineral build-up & more. When surfaces do get dirty, wipe away with ease! Protects surfaces for up to 6-12 months.
- SUPER-SLICK, ANTI-STICK, & ULTRA HYDROPHOBIC -- Lifeproof Home gives surfaces that super-slick, clean glass feeling, repelling liquids, stains, and other unwanted elements. DO NOT USE ON FLOORS due to super slick properties.
- MULTI-SURFACE SAFE -- Lifeproof Home is invisible and safe to use on nearly any hard surface including granite counters, stainless steel, appliances, laminate, marble, glass, metal, tile, porcelain, stone, painted cabinets, coriander, and many other home, kitchen, & bath surfaces.
- NON-TOXIC COATING -- Rest easy knowing your surfaces are protected in a non-toxic coating. Lifeproof Home has passed MTT Cytotoxicity testing.
- EASY SPRAY APPLICATION -- Starting with a cleaned surface, simply spray on desired surface, buff in with included microfiber towel, flip towel and remove any residue. Let cure (wait 1 hour for dry use, 4 hours for wet). Lifeproof Home coating can be removed anytime with Isopropyl alcohol. For best results, ensure surface is cleaned thoroughly before application.
The report named microfluidics—the controlled handling of small liquid volumes—and water harvesting as potential application areas. These are prospective uses, not established products or deployed systems. The findings describe a research material and experiment, not an ordinary water-repellent coating.

What remains uncertain?
The 2019 report gives an overview of the result but does not establish exact experimental conditions, detailed definitions for its speed and distance comparisons, or uncertainty estimates. It also explicitly notes that the molecular mechanism was still under debate. The reported demonstrations support the claim that a patterned surface can guide droplets along unusual paths; they do not by themselves establish how broadly the effect would work outside the study’s setup.
