But it is not a guaranteed upgrade: a material’s overall performance depends on how electrical and thermal transport change together, at the temperature where it will operate.
What does thermoelectric performance mean?
Thermoelectric materials convert a temperature difference into electrical voltage, or use electrical current to move heat. Their material-level performance is commonly described by the dimensionless figure of merit ZT:

ZT = S²σT/κtotal
- S is the Seebeck coefficient, which describes the voltage produced per temperature difference.
- σ is electrical conductivity.
- T is absolute temperature.
- κtotal is total thermal conductivity.
Because electrical transport appears in the numerator while heat conduction appears in the denominator, optimizing just one property does not establish that ZT has improved. The 2024 Nature Communications article describes the measure as ZT = α²σT/κtot, using α for the Seebeck coefficient.
How can doping change performance?
Doping introduces selected atoms into a host material to adjust its properties. Depending on the host, dopant, concentration, and resulting structure, it can affect several parts of the ZT equation:

- Model: TEC1-12706.
- Size: 40mm x 40mm x 3.6mm.
- Refrigeration power: Qcmax 50-60W.
- Operation Temperature: -30°C-70°C(-86℉-158℉)
- Carrier concentration: Changing the number of mobile charge carriers can shift the balance between Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity.
- Band structure: In some systems, dopants can alter the electronic states that govern charge transport.
- Phonon scattering: Defects or other features introduced by doping can scatter phonons, the main heat-carrying vibrations in many solids, and may reduce thermal conductivity.
These effects depend on how the dopant behaves in the material. The 2024 Nature Communications study discusses foreign atoms distributed in a solid solution as a way to tune carrier concentration, band structure, and high-frequency phonon scattering. It contrasts this with low-solubility dopants that can form clusters, nanoprecipitates, or boundary complexions. “Doped” therefore does not describe one universal mechanism.
What do reported examples show?
Published results illustrate how doping strategies can be associated with improved material-level metrics, but the figures apply to particular compositions and measurement temperatures—not to every material containing the same element.
Bi(Te,Se): a room-temperature power-factor example
A 2024 Journal of Alloys and Compounds article reports a series involving Se alloying, Sn doping, and Cu introduction. In its stated compositions, room-temperature carrier concentration fell from approximately 5.5 × 1020 to 2.21 × 1020 cm−3, while room-temperature power factor rose from approximately 4.17 to 9.78 μW cm−1 K−2. For Bi0.92Sn0.07Te0.4Se0.6-2%Cu, the paper reports room-temperature ZT of approximately 0.29 and a peak ZT of approximately 0.41 at 373 K. The authors attribute reduced total thermal conductivity in part to reduced electronic thermal conductivity and point-defect phonon scattering.

Na/Sn-doped PbTe: a higher-temperature example
A 2023 research article on Na/Sn-doped PbTe reports a maximum ZT of approximately 2.0 at 773 K for PbTe doped with 4% Na and 2% Sn in a Te-rich environment. It also reports an average ZT of approximately 1.21 across 323–773 K. These figures describe that stated composition and temperature range, rather than PbTe generally.

The two examples are not a direct ranking: they use different hosts, compositions, and temperature conditions. Their peak values also answer a different question from an average across an operating range.

- High Reliability: High reliability with no pollution for sustainable energy generation.
- Efficient Heating : Heating side is empty for optimized thermal efficiency.
- Easy to Use : Red wire to positive, black wire to negative for simple electricity generation from temperature differences.
- Lightweight and Portable : Light weight and compact design for easy portability.
- Long-lasting : Long life span for continuous use without replacement.
- Composition and processing: Record the host formula, dopant identity and concentration, alloying additions, and whether the dopant is reported in solid solution or associated with clusters or other features.
- Temperature: Note the temperature of a peak value and the range used for an average. A peak ZT and an average over a working range are not interchangeable.
- Electrical transport: Look for carrier concentration, electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor.
- Heat transport: Check total thermal conductivity and, when available, its electronic and lattice contributions.
- Evidence level: Distinguish a measured material property from a generator or module’s output and efficiency. The cited examples report material-level results, not device performance.
A 2024 assessment of individual and segmented thermoelectric materials maps selected examples of published performance across temperature regimes, including Bi2Te3 near room temperature and SnSe and PbTe at higher temperatures. It presents selected high-performing examples, not a representative guarantee for every composition in those material classes.
