Zelle lets people send money through participating U.S. banks and credit unions using the recipient’s enrolled email address or U.S. mobile number. The money goes to the bank account linked to that contact detail. Transfers to someone already enrolled typically arrive within minutes, but completed payments generally cannot be reversed—so verify the recipient and amount before sending.
What you need to use Zelle
- A checking or savings account that meets your bank or credit union’s eligibility rules.
- Access to a participating institution’s mobile app or online banking, where you enroll and send payments.
- The recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number enrolled with Zelle. You do not need their bank account number.
Both people need eligible accounts, but their enrollment status affects how the transfer proceeds. Zelle’s guidance describes the service for U.S. bank and credit union accounts; the institution determines which of its accounts qualify and what rules apply. How to send a Zelle payment
- Open your bank or credit union’s app or website. Find its Zelle enrollment or payment option and follow the institution’s steps.
- Enroll your contact detail. Link an email address or U.S. mobile number to an eligible checking or savings account, following your institution’s prompts.
- Choose the recipient. Enter or select the email address or U.S. mobile number the recipient has enrolled. Check the recipient identity displayed, if available, and confirm the contact detail directly with the person.
- Enter the amount and review. Check both the amount and recipient before confirming. Zelle recommends sending money only to people you know and trust.
- Confirm the payment. The transfer is directed to the account associated with the recipient’s enrolled contact detail. Your bank or credit union’s app is the place to check its status.
How long does Zelle take?
When the recipient is already enrolled, Zelle says transfers typically arrive within minutes. That is not a guaranteed completion time for every payment: availability can depend on the financial institution and transaction. Check the payment status in your banking app or online account. Zelle’s timing guidance describes the typical case.
What happens if the recipient has not enrolled?
Zelle notifies the recipient and prompts them to enroll using the same email address or U.S. mobile number you used to send the payment. Until they enroll, the payment is pending rather than delivered to an enrolled account. Zelle says the payment expires and the funds return if the recipient does not enroll within 14 days. Check its unenrolled-recipient FAQ for details.

Can you cancel or reverse a Zelle payment?
A payment to a recipient who is already enrolled generally cannot be reversed once completed. Zelle says you can cancel a payment only while the recipient has not enrolled. If a payment is still pending, check its status and any cancellation option in your bank or credit union’s channel; do not assume a completed transfer can be recalled.
If a payment appears missing, check its status with your financial institution. For suspected fraud or an unauthorized transaction, contact the bank or credit union promptly. Zelle says qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement, but eligibility is not guaranteed for every loss. Its cancellation guidance explains the distinction.

Is Zelle safe for buying from strangers?
Zelle is designed for payments to people you know and trust, not as a substitute for a marketplace payment method with purchase protection. Zelle does not provide purchase protection if an item bought through the service never arrives or is not as described. That makes it a poor fit for paying an unknown seller when delivery or condition is uncertain. Review Zelle’s FAQ on unenrolled recipients and purchase protection before using it for a purchase.
Fees and transfer limits depend on your institution
Zelle’s Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions offering the service reported that 99.40% of consumer checking and savings accounts linked to Zelle did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money. That network-wide, dated survey figure does not establish the fee for your account; check your bank or credit union’s terms.
