Voice over wireless IP is voice communication carried over an IP network through a wireless connection. In the common Wi-Fi case, it is voice over IP (VoIP) using a wireless local area network (WLAN), often called voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) or VoWiFi. IP carries the voice service; Wi-Fi provides the wireless link.
How does voice over wireless IP work?
In a typical enterprise setup, a wireless IP phone connects to a Wi-Fi access point. The access point forwards its traffic into the wired IP network, while call signaling reaches a call-control system that processes and routes calls. The exact devices and protocols depend on the phone system and deployment, as Cisco’s wireless IP phone overview illustrates.

The wireless link and the voice service are separate parts of the arrangement. IEEE 802.11 defines WLAN media access control (MAC) and physical-layer (PHY) functions. Voice service uses IP networking along with signaling and speech codecs. Cisco’s documented system gives SIP and SCCP as signaling examples, and G.711 and G.729 as codec examples; these are not universal requirements.

What do VoIP, VoWLAN, and VoWiFi mean?
- VoIP means voice over IP: phone calls carried over an IP data network.
- VoWLAN means voice over a wireless LAN. In common usage, it describes VoIP calls carried over a WLAN.
- VoWiFi is another term used for voice over Wi-Fi. Its specific implementation and service arrangement can vary.
The terms describe related parts of a system, not necessarily the same implementation. In particular, Wi-Fi calling offered as a service and an enterprise VoWLAN deployment should not automatically be treated as identical.

What does a network need to carry voice over Wi-Fi?
A WLAN designed for voice needs voice-aware configuration and layout, rather than simply the setup used for data-only access. Cisco’s VoWLAN troubleshooting guide distinguishes voice WLAN considerations from data-only WLAN use. For a particular deployment, assess the intended use, coverage and roaming needs, security configuration, and the voice features supported by the phone system and WLAN equipment. There is no universal device checklist or numeric performance threshold established by these sources.
Is voice over wireless IP the same as ordinary cellular calling?
Not by definition. The term describes voice carried over IP using a wireless IP network for access; the common example is Wi-Fi. Cellular calling may use different network technologies and service arrangements. Whether a particular phone call uses Wi-Fi, cellular service, or another path depends on the device and service implementation.

What is the standard behind Wi-Fi voice?
IEEE 802.11 specifies WLAN MAC and PHY functions. The IEEE Standards Association’s IEEE 802.11-2024 catalog says the standard includes procedures for transporting voice, audio, and video over WLANs. That describes WLAN capabilities; it does not prescribe one universal voice service, phone system, or signaling protocol.
