Compared with the newer Ford class, it serves the same broad role and is close in headline size, but uses older steam-powered launch and recovery systems and a different flight-deck and weapons-handling layout. The Ford design aims to move aircraft and ordnance more efficiently, generate more sorties, and require fewer personnel; the sortie-rate advantage is promising but not yet established as a universal operational result.
At a glance: similar scale, redesigned systems
The Navy’s 2025 carrier briefing lists Nimitz-class carriers at about 97,000 tons full load and Ford-class carriers at about 100,000 tons. It lists both at more than 30 knots and more than 65 aircraft. These are class-level summary figures, not a statement of Truman’s current embarked air wing or a guarantee that every deployment carries the same number of aircraft. The basic change is not a new mission or a dramatically larger hull. Ford retains the supercarrier role while redesigning how aircraft are launched and recovered, and how aircraft and weapons move around the flight deck and hangar.

| Accommodations in the program-office comparison | 5,922 | 4,660 |

The last four comparisons come from NAVSEA’s CVN 78 Class Program Office slide dated April 4, 2022. They are program-office comparison figures; the sortie numbers describe a design comparison, not a rate independently demonstrated on every deployment. The accommodations figures are not equivalent to the total personnel aboard on a particular mission. (NAVSEA CVN 78 Class Program Office, “Carrier Class Comparison”)

How aircraft launch and recovery differ
Nimitz: steam catapults and Mk-7 arresting gear
Truman’s Nimitz-class design uses four steam catapults to launch aircraft and Mk-7 series arresting gear to recover them. The launch and recovery systems perform the same essential jobs as their Ford counterparts, but use different technology.
Ford: EMALS and AAG
Ford uses four Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems (EMALS) and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG). EMALS uses stored kinetic energy and solid-state electrical power conversion rather than steam. NAVAIR says it is designed to provide computer-controlled launch settings for a broad range of aircraft, from lightweight unmanned systems to heavy strike fighters. Its stated design aims include more precise control of launch speed, less stress on aircraft, and lower maintenance demands; these are system objectives, not a quantified Truman-versus-Ford deployment test. (NAVAIR, “Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS)”)

AAG uses energy absorbers, power conditioning, and digital controls. NAVAIR describes it as designed to recover a broad range of aircraft with less maintenance and manpower than the Mk-7 systems used on Nimitz-class carriers. Those benefits should be understood as intended characteristics rather than a claim that every operational result has been measured publicly. (NAVAIR, “Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG)”)

What the sortie-rate figures do—and do not—show
Increasing sortie generation—the pace at which a carrier can launch and recover aircraft—is a central Ford design objective. NAVSEA’s 2022 comparison lists 120 sustained sorties for Nimitz and 160 for Ford, alongside a flight deck of 4.5 acres versus 5 acres. A larger deck alone does not establish combat power or prove that a ship will achieve a particular daily rate; deck arrangement, aircraft mix, maintenance, mission demands, and operating conditions matter too.

There is some operational evidence, but it remains preliminary. In a 2026 public statement, U.S. Fleet Forces Command said that preliminary reports from the Ford sortie-generation test program showed the flight-deck design, EMALS, and AAG had contributed to an increase over a Nimitz-class carrier. The command also said it was still analyzing the data. That supports describing the early finding as promising, not treating the 160-versus-120 comparison as an independently validated 33 percent increase for every Ford deployment. (U.S. Fleet Forces Command, “USS Gerald R. Ford Crew Demonstrates Resilience, Readiness During Extended Deployment”)
Ford’s first deployment offers a measure of activity, not a controlled class-to-class comparison. The Navy reported that the carrier spent 239 days underway during its 2023 deployment and recorded 10,396 sorties and 17,826 flight hours. Without matching dates, operating conditions, mission mix, and counting methods for Truman, those totals cannot establish which class generates sorties faster. (U.S. Navy, “Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group Returns from Historic Deployment”)

Flight-deck workflow and weapons handling
The program-office comparison gives Ford a 5-acre flight deck versus 4.5 acres for Nimitz, but the more significant distinction is the arrangement of work across the ship. NAVSEA’s comparison lists about 390 feet of horizontal weapons movement on Ford against about 1,500 feet on Nimitz. The shorter path illustrates how Ford’s redesigned weapons-handling arrangement is intended to reduce movement and help aircraft turn around more efficiently. These figures describe the program’s comparison, not a standalone measure of how quickly either ship can complete a specific mission.

Crew, maintenance, and lifecycle trade-offs
Navy material describes Ford as designed to need fewer personnel and lower lifecycle operating and support costs than Nimitz. The reduced-accommodations figures in NAVSEA’s 2022 slide—4,660 for Ford and 5,922 for Nimitz—are not a simple headcount of ship’s company, air wing, and staff. Personnel aboard also depend on deployment and mission requirements. Similarly, a class-level claim about a smaller crew does not specify the total number of people embarked on a particular voyage.

Lifecycle savings are a design expectation over a long service life, not the same thing as a lower initial purchase price. AIRLANT’s 2025 briefing reports acquisition costs with different fiscal-year bases, so those figures should not be compared as if they were prices stated in the same year. (AIRLANT, “U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers (DV Brief 2025)”)
What this means for Truman
Truman remains a nuclear-powered U.S. supercarrier in the Nimitz class, with a broadly similar headline size and stated aircraft capacity to the Ford class. Ford’s distinction is its newer launch and recovery technology and redesigned workflow, intended to support more efficient operations, higher sortie generation, and lower personnel and maintenance demands. The Navy’s early public test reporting points toward a sortie-rate improvement, but the published analysis is still preliminary; the class comparison should therefore separate design goals from proven results in a specific deployment.
