The examples are trimmed versions of app code, and the post says it was drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by the team, so treat the implementation as a case study rather than an independently verified platform guarantee. How does an Android app become the default launcher?
Registering an activity for Home makes the app eligible to be selected; it does not take the current launcher away from the user. ReClaim’s described manifest filter combines ACTION_MAIN with CATEGORY_HOME, and also includes DEFAULT and LAUNCHER. The user must still choose the app as the default Home handler.

For Android API 29 and later, the team describes requesting the ROLE_HOME role through RoleManager, with the system Home settings picker as a fallback. Its important diagnostic lesson is to check what the Home intent actually resolves to, rather than trusting role state alone. In the team’s reported bug, the role appeared to be held while preferred-activity resolution remained out of sync; after reboot or process death, Home could show a chooser. Reselecting the launcher in system Home settings repaired that condition. This is a reported implementation issue, not evidence that every launcher will encounter it.

The activity uses singleTask. In the described setup, pressing Home while that activity is already in front reaches onNewIntent(), where the app can return to its main page and close an overlay. The post also identifies clearTaskOnLaunch, stateNotNeeded, and excludeFromRecents as task-behavior choices, and adjustNothing as a way to keep the home task from resizing when search opens. These flags should be selected for the intended task behavior rather than copied as a universal launcher recipe.

How can a launcher list and launch installed apps?
ReClaim uses Android’s LauncherApps API to query launchable activities for the current user, then registers a callback for package additions, removals, changes, and availability changes. It launches a selected activity with startMainActivity, falling back to a package launch intent when needed.
On Android 11 and later, package visibility affects which installed packages an app can see. The article says ReClaim declares QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES for its core launcher function. That permission is subject to Google Play review; declaring it does not guarantee approval, and apps should justify it against current Play policy.
Use visual restraint as a deliberate interface choice
The product keeps full-color icons for chosen favorites, while its complete app drawer is an alphabetical, text-only list with search and an A–Z index. The stated design aim is to give access to installed apps “without making distracting apps visually appealing.” This is a product trade-off, not a measured claim that a text list changes usage behavior.

How does Kotlin usage tracking handle midnight?
The team describes using UsageStatsManager both to suggest apps to block based on the preceding seven days of use and to show per-app totals. Access to usage data is a special capability: the user grants PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS access through Settings. The implementation checks the relevant app-op rather than treating it as an ordinary runtime permission.
Daily aggregate usage buckets can include time from the previous day until they roll over, according to the team’s account. A total based only on those aggregates may therefore be wrong at local midnight. ReClaim’s described approach replays raw events returned by queryEvents() and sums foreground intervals for the day.
To avoid counting overlapping foreground transitions twice when an app briefly moves between its own activities, the implementation tracks a count of nested foreground transitions. It also adds the currently open session using elapsed time measured from SystemClock.elapsedRealtime(), because that session may not yet be represented reliably in historical usage data. This is the team’s stated solution to the edge case, not an independently tested guarantee across devices.

How can a launcher block apps opened outside its own screen?
A check immediately before launching an app only covers launches initiated through the launcher. To observe a user switching to an app elsewhere, ReClaim describes an optional accessibility service that watches window-state changes, ignores System UI and ReClaim itself, debounces repeated events, and opens a full-screen block activity when a blocked package comes to the foreground.

The blocked-package set is held in memory and refreshed from temporary and scheduled blocks. The article gives 1,000 milliseconds as the event debounce interval in its implementation; that is a configuration detail from the post, not a recommended universal value.
A third-party launcher cannot force-stop another app’s process. The pattern described is to redirect the user to a block screen or Home, not to kill the app. The implementation also includes a narrow picture-in-picture bounds exception so a video left playing after a block can be dismissed.

Accessibility is a sensitive product and policy decision
ReClaim says it presents a disclosure before directing users to Accessibility settings. Its explanation says the app is not an accessibility tool, checks only foreground app identity, and does not read or send screen content. Google Play reviews accessibility-service uses that are not for accessibility purposes. This is a description of ReClaim’s approach, not legal advice or a guarantee of policy approval; developers should review the current policy and design the disclosure and service scope carefully.

The post says the described approach has no public API for expanding the notification shade. ReClaim used reflection to call a hidden StatusBarManager method and guarded the call so failure would be tolerated. Hidden APIs can vary across Android versions and are not a stable foundation for a core feature.

For web search, it tries ACTION_WEB_SEARCH and falls back to opening a browser URL. These are compatibility paths to validate on target devices, not guarantees that every device has the same handlers.
What does this case study establish—and what does it not?
ReClaim’s account illustrates why a visually minimal launcher still involves platform integration: default-role and actual intent resolution can diverge; package visibility shapes app discovery; usage events need careful time accounting; and system-wide interception relies on a sensitive accessibility mechanism. The post does not provide independent performance tests or evidence that the launcher measurably reduces screen time, so those outcomes should not be inferred from the implementation details.
There is also a chronology distinction around availability. The October 1, 2026 post says ReClaim was not yet on Google Play when it was written and mentions a waitlist. The newer official ReClaim site describes an Android launcher and displays a Google Play download link; use that current product page for availability rather than repeating the post’s earlier status. Its positioning is “A minimal Android launcher that strips away the noise. No icons, no clutter. Just what matters.”
