Your PS4 or PS5 runs the game; the PS Remote Play app streams that console session to your phone, and Backbone provides the physical controls.
What Backbone does—and what Remote Play does
The setup has two linked parts: the phone and Backbone act as the screen and input device, while the console runs the game. PS Remote Play connects the phone to the console over a network and sends the console session to the phone. Backbone itself does not run or stream PlayStation games.

You need a PS4 or PS5, a PlayStation account, a compatible phone, the PS Remote Play app, and a network connection. Sony says Remote Play can work over broadband or mobile data. Sony’s PS Remote Play mobile support page explains the app and connection requirements.

How to connect Backbone to a PS4 or PS5
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and enable it. On PS4, enable Remote Play in Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and activate the console as the account’s primary PS4. If you want to wake the console remotely from Rest Mode, enable the relevant internet and network wake options in its power settings. Sony’s setup instructions cover both consoles.
- Install PS Remote Play on your phone. Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Attach the controller. Extend Backbone One, connect its plug to the phone, then close the grips around the phone until it is secure.
- Choose your console in the app. In PS Remote Play, select PS5 or PS4. The app searches for the console associated with your signed-in account and displays its screen when connected.
- Play using Backbone’s controls. The controller sends your inputs to the phone and Remote Play relays them to the console. Sony says you do not need the Backbone app for basic controller use. Sony’s Backbone One – PlayStation Edition support page describes its use and compatibility.
Phone compatibility and power
| Phone | Compatibility listed by Sony | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 10.0 or later, with a USB Type-C port. | Confirm your phone has USB-C and fits securely in the controller. |
| iPhone | iOS 15 or later for iPhone compatibility with Backbone One – PlayStation Edition. | Check the exact iPhone connector and physical fit before buying. |
Backbone has no battery and draws a small amount of power from the phone. It includes a pass-through port so you can charge the phone while playing. The phone still needs the PS Remote Play app; the Backbone app is not required just to use the controller. Sony’s compatibility and product details provide the listed OS requirements.

Network speed and mobile data affect play
Sony recommends upload and download speeds of at least 5 Mbps as a standard for Remote Play, and at least 15 Mbps for best performance. These are Sony’s recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular experience: connection stability also matters. Sony warns that Remote Play can use substantially more mobile data than many video streaming services. Check your mobile plan’s allowance if you play over cellular data. Sony’s Remote Play mobile documentation gives the speed guidance and data warning.

The PlayStation Edition is not limited to PS Remote Play. Sony describes support for other compatible applications, including mobile games and streaming services that support controllers. That does not mean every mobile game or streaming service will work; compatibility depends on the individual app. Sony’s launch announcement names examples of supported app categories.

Backbone, other controllers, and PlayStation Portal
If you do not want a phone-mounted controller, Sony also supports on-screen controls in Remote Play and pairing certain DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controllers with compatible devices. PlayStation Portal is a separate dedicated Remote Play device for PS5; it is not required to use Backbone. Choose based on whether you already have a compatible phone and console, whether you want built-in physical controls, and where you expect to have a reliable network connection. Sony’s documentation does not establish a price or performance comparison between Backbone and Portal.
