Online gaming works by exchanging gameplay information between players’ devices over a network. In a common client/server setup, each game client sends player actions to a server; the server updates the shared game state and sends relevant changes back. Each player’s device then renders the scene locally. Games can use other arrangements too, including a player-hosted server or peer-to-peer connections.
What happens when you play online?
A typical online match repeats a simple cycle: players send actions, the game’s networking system carries them, and connected devices receive updates about what has changed. In a client/server game, the server processes gameplay and keeps the authoritative version of the match state. Each client uses the information it receives to maintain its own view and draw the game.

- You act: You press a control, such as move or fire, and your game client sends the action or command over the network.
- The game processes it: In a client/server design, the server evaluates the action and updates the match. Unreal Engine’s networking example, for instance, has the server spawn a projectile and resolve its collision and damage.
- Updates go back to players: The server sends selected changes to connected clients. Each client updates its local representation and renders the result, including relevant visual and sound effects.
- The cycle continues: Players keep acting and the game state keeps changing. Network delay or lost information can mean that a client’s view temporarily differs from the server’s state.
As Unreal Engine’s Networking Overview puts it, “The server, as the host of the game, holds the one, true, authoritative game state.” That describes Unreal’s client/server model; not every online game uses the same architecture.

The server usually sends game state, not graphics
In ordinary multiplayer networking, a server does not normally stream the finished graphics to each player. It sends gameplay information, and each player’s device renders the scene locally. Cloud gaming is a different delivery pattern: Unreal documents Pixel Streaming separately from its ordinary multiplayer networking.

What do matchmaking and lobbies do?
Matchmaking helps select or connect players for a session according to a game’s rules. A lobby gives players a place to gather before a match starts or they join play. Platform services may also support invites, joining friends, session management, voice or text chat, and allocating a server; which features are available depends on the game and platform.
Finding players is separate from carrying gameplay data. Steamworks explains that matchmaking and lobbies do not provide the networking for a match: the game still needs a networking system, such as its engine’s networking, peer-to-peer connections, or game servers. Steamworks describes the distinction in its Multiplayer documentation.

Who hosts the match? Common network arrangements
Games differ in which device or service runs the session and controls gameplay. These arrangements bring different trade-offs; none is best for every game.

| Arrangement | Who hosts or communicates? | Practical trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated server | A separate server runs the match rather than a player’s machine. | It avoids making one participant the local host and can suit persistent or large-scale play. Unreal describes it as often used where multiplayer needs to be persistent, secure, or large-scale; Steamworks recommends its game-server path for highly competitive games and persistent servers. These are platform-specific guidance, not universal rules. |
| Listen server (player host) | One player’s machine runs the session and that player’s game. | It can be convenient for casual sessions, but the host may have an advantage and their device must do server work as well as player-facing work. |
| Peer-to-peer | Players’ devices communicate with one another, sometimes using a relay. | Steamworks notes that this can suit smaller groups. Fairness, reliability, security, and topology depend on the particular game and implementation. |
What a relay does
A relay forwards network traffic between participants. Steam says its Datagram Relay prevents IP addresses from being revealed and may improve ping or connection quality in many cases. Microsoft describes relay use in its own client-host guidance as a way to avoid IP leaks associated with traditional peer-to-peer implementations. These are benefits of specific implementations—not guarantees of low latency, complete safety, or a feature present in every game.

Why do online games lag?
Network updates take time to travel between devices, and connections can deliver information unreliably. While updates are in transit or missing, a player’s locally rendered view may not match the server’s authoritative state. What players call lag can have different causes, including distance, network routing, congestion, local wireless conditions, server load, or the game’s network design.
There is no single acceptable ping threshold or universal fix established by the platform documentation cited here. A relay may improve connection quality in some cases, but it cannot be assumed to eliminate lag. The effect of any particular cause depends on the network and game.

What to remember about online play
- Players’ devices exchange game information over a network to share a match.
- In a common client/server design, the server processes gameplay and maintains authoritative state while clients render local views.
- Matchmaking and lobbies help players find and group up; they are distinct from the networking that carries gameplay.
- Dedicated servers, player hosts, and peer-to-peer connections are different ways to run a session, each with trade-offs.
- Network delay or unreliable delivery can make players’ views differ temporarily; no one fix or ping number applies to every game.
