With direct Nginx TLS, the origin server controls its HTTPS settings. With delegated edge policy, a provider handles the visitor-facing TLS connection—but the edge-to-origin connection still needs its own encryption and certificate-validation rules. The practical choice is not simply “Nginx or edge”: it is where each TLS decision lives and how you verify both connections.
What changes when TLS policy moves to an edge?
Without an edge proxy, a visitor connects to Nginx, which presents a certificate and negotiates TLS. When a proxy such as Cloudflare sits in front of the server, there are two separate connections: visitor to edge, and edge to origin. The edge’s visitor-facing certificate does not, by itself, establish that traffic from the edge to Nginx is encrypted or that the origin is authenticated. Cloudflare’s encryption-mode documentation describes these as distinct connections.

That distinction is the core of the decision. Direct configuration keeps policy at the Nginx origin. Edge delegation can centralize visitor-facing policy in the provider, but it does not remove the need to configure and maintain origin TLS, certificates, and any route that can bypass the proxy.
How does direct Nginx TLS configuration work?
Nginx terminates HTTPS and negotiates the protocol and cipher settings specified by its configuration, subject to the capabilities of the installed Nginx and OpenSSL builds. The official Nginx HTTPS guide illustrates the relevant directives:

This is an example, not a universal recommended cipher policy. Nginx’s defaults have changed over time, so check the documentation for the versions actually deployed rather than copying an old configuration as a timeless baseline. The Nginx SSL module reference documents the directives and notes that the module requires OpenSSL; if it is not included by default, Nginx must be built with --with-http_ssl_module. TLS 1.3 support also depends on a sufficiently recent OpenSSL version.
Protect the private key and serve the certificate chain
The certificate is public; the private key is secret. Nginx’s HTTPS guide says the key should have restricted access while remaining readable by the Nginx master process. The SSL module documentation also specifies certificate-chain ordering: put the primary certificate before intermediate certificates in the certificate file. These are separate operational responsibilities from choosing protocols and ciphers.

What does delegated edge TLS change?
An edge provider terminates the visitor’s TLS connection and applies its visitor-facing settings. The provider then connects to the origin under a separate policy. The edge may use HTTPS to the origin, but the mode determines whether that connection follows the visitor’s original scheme and whether the origin certificate is checked.

- Full: Cloudflare uses the visitor’s requested scheme for the origin connection and does not validate the origin certificate. If a visitor arrives over HTTP, the origin connection can therefore be HTTP; if the visitor arrives over HTTPS, Cloudflare uses HTTPS but does not authenticate the origin certificate.
- Full (strict): Cloudflare validates the origin certificate. Its documentation says the origin must accept HTTPS on port 443 and present an unexpired certificate issued by a public CA or Cloudflare Origin CA, with a hostname matching the requested or target hostname. A certificate or setup failure can produce a 526 error.
Cloudflare describes Full (strict) as its recommended mode whenever possible, subject to stated exceptions for Enterprise customers using Strict (SSL-Only Origin Pull). That is Cloudflare’s product guidance, not a vendor-neutral standard. Its Full (strict) requirements cover certificate prerequisites and failure behavior.
Enterprise-only SSL-Only Origin Pull
Cloudflare documents Strict (SSL-Only Origin Pull) as an Enterprise-only mode. It always uses TLS to the origin and validates the origin certificate. See Cloudflare’s Strict (SSL-Only Origin Pull) documentation for its scope and behavior.

How do the two approaches compare?
| Decision area | Direct Nginx TLS | Delegated Cloudflare edge policy |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor-facing protocol policy | Set in Nginx, within the limits of the deployed Nginx and OpenSSL versions. | Managed at the edge; origin settings remain a separate decision. |
| Origin-leg encryption | The visitor connects directly to Nginx over HTTPS. | Depends on the selected mode. Full follows the visitor’s scheme; Full (strict) uses HTTPS to the origin. |
| Origin certificate validation | Nginx presents its certificate to the visitor; no separate edge-to-origin validation applies. | Full does not validate the origin certificate; Full (strict) does. |
| Configuration location | Nginx deployment configuration. | Edge provider settings for visitor-facing policy, plus origin configuration and certificate operations. |
| Key operational concern | Version compatibility, certificate-chain order, private-key permissions, and changes to Nginx configuration. | Origin certificate validity and hostname, HTTPS availability on port 443 for strict mode, and routes that may bypass the edge. |
Which approach should you choose?
Keep TLS control in Nginx when
- You need the origin server itself to own and expose the visitor-facing TLS policy.
- Your deployment process already manages Nginx configuration, certificate renewal, and private-key access.
- You want to avoid making the visitor-facing handshake dependent on an edge provider.
Delegate visitor-facing policy when
- You want to centralize visitor-facing TLS management at an edge provider.
- You can also define and maintain a deliberate edge-to-origin policy, rather than treating the edge certificate as proof that the origin leg is secure.
- You can keep origin certificates valid and ensure any direct-to-origin access is handled intentionally.
These approaches are not mutually exclusive: Nginx can still serve HTTPS to the edge while the provider manages the visitor-facing connection. The important choice is whether the origin leg is encrypted and, where the provider supports it, whether its certificate is validated.

What to verify before changing policy
- Identify the actual TLS endpoints. Determine whether visitors connect directly to Nginx or through an edge, and whether any hostname or route can reach the origin without the proxy.
- Check the Nginx and OpenSSL builds. Confirm that the SSL module is available and that the deployed versions support the protocols and directives you plan to use. Use the Nginx HTTPS guide and SSL module reference for version-specific behavior.
- Review the origin certificate setup. Confirm that the certificate chain is ordered correctly and that the private key is restricted while readable by the Nginx master process.
- For Cloudflare Full (strict), verify every prerequisite. The origin must accept HTTPS on port 443; the certificate must be unexpired, issued by a public CA or Cloudflare Origin CA, and match the requested or target hostname.
- Test the change through the real request path. Check both visitor-to-edge behavior and edge-to-origin behavior. If strict validation fails, investigate the origin certificate and hostname configuration; Cloudflare identifies such setup problems as a cause of 526 errors. Also check for redirect loops or mixed-content issues after a mode change, which may require adjustment.
