Meta Quest 3 mixed reality combines a live, full-color camera view of your room with virtual graphics rendered by apps. Depth and room-understanding features can help those graphics relate to nearby surfaces, while spatial anchors can help keep them in place. What you see is camera-mediated passthrough—not a direct view through transparent lenses.
How does mixed reality work on the Meta Quest 3?
The headset captures your surroundings with stereo cameras and displays that view inside the headset. A system compositor then combines the passthrough image with virtual content from an app. Depth estimation and room-mapping capabilities can add spatial context, so virtual content may appear at different distances, be visually hidden by a physical surface, or remain associated with a position in the room.

These capabilities form a layered system: passthrough supplies the view of the physical world, the compositor combines that view and app graphics, and spatial features help apps relate content to the environment. The specific effects depend on what an app implements.
What happens between the cameras and the virtual scene?
1. Cameras capture a view of the room
Quest 3 uses stereo cameras to capture the physical environment and display it in real time in full color. Because the view is shown on screens inside the headset, passthrough is a camera-derived representation of the room rather than optical see-through. Meta’s passthrough documentation describes the system and its practical limits.

2. The compositor combines passthrough and app graphics
In native implementations, passthrough is rendered by a system service into a separate layer submitted to the XR Compositor. An app submits a passthrough placeholder layer; the system supplies the camera view and combines it with the app’s rendered content. The app does not have to render the standard passthrough image itself. See Meta’s implementation documentation.
3. Depth helps with front-to-back placement
Depth estimation gives the system information about how far physical surfaces are from the headset. An app can use that information so a real surface visually covers a virtual object when it should be in front of it. This is occlusion: a rendering effect that changes what appears in front, not a way for virtual objects to become physically present.

4. Room understanding provides context
Space Setup uses cameras and depth sensors to create a 3D scan of the environment. Meta’s Scene API can identify room features such as floors, ceilings, and doors, giving apps information they can use to build interactions around a room rather than treating it as an undifferentiated camera image. Meta outlines these capabilities in its mixed-reality overview.
5. Spatial anchors can preserve placement
Spatial Anchors can help an app maintain a virtual object’s position in a room during a session and, when supported by the experience, between sessions. That lets an app return to a placement instead of treating every frame as an unrelated overlay. Persistence and other behavior depend on the app’s implementation.

What mixed reality can—and cannot—do
- Passthrough is not a direct optical view. You see a live camera representation displayed in the headset.
- Occlusion changes appearance, not physical interaction. A real object may visually cover virtual content, but the virtual object remains digital.
- Room understanding is distinct from raw camera access. Standard passthrough is composited by the operating system without giving an app the environmental images or video. Raw frames for computer-vision processing use a separate camera-access path subject to permissions and policy requirements.
- Passthrough is not a precision visual aid. Meta warns developers that latency and visual quality vary, and advises against requiring fine text reading or precise real-world movement based on the passthrough view.
- Safety boundaries still apply. Horizon OS supports stationary and user-traced roomscale boundaries; passthrough can appear as a person approaches a boundary edge.
How to compare Quest 3 mixed-reality experiences
Rather than assuming every app uses the headset’s capabilities in the same way, check which features an experience actually implements:
- Does it use passthrough as a background, or make virtual content interact with the room?
- Does it use depth-based occlusion so physical objects can appear in front of virtual ones?
- Does it understand room features such as floors, doors, or ceilings?
- Can it preserve virtual object placement between sessions?
These are useful capability questions, not a measured ranking of apps. Meta’s September 28, 2023 developer announcement described Quest 3 passthrough as delivering 10 times more pixels than Quest 2. That is Meta’s own historical comparison, not an independent benchmark. In the same announcement, Meta reported a 31% increase in TRIPP’s seven-day average daily active users after the mindfulness app incorporated passthrough-based features; the reported change does not establish that passthrough alone caused the increase. Meta’s announcement also quoted Cubism creator Thomas Van Bouwel saying passthrough and hand tracking suited the game’s simple format and that mixed reality seemed to reduce onboarding friction by letting players stay connected to their environment.
