For the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, field hockey qualification is a team process: 12 teams per gender will compete, earning places through the host pathway, the FIH Hockey Pro League, continental championships and four Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The top two teams at each LA28 qualifier tournament earn a place. These are the currently published rules; qualification systems can change from one Olympic cycle to another. How many teams qualify for LA28?
The published LA28 system provides for 12 teams in each gender’s Olympic tournament. Places are available through four kinds of pathway: the host nation, the FIH Hockey Pro League, continental championships and Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The exact allocation and eligibility conditions are set by the cycle’s qualification system, so a route’s presence does not mean every team can qualify through it.

What are the LA28 qualification routes?
Host place
The host pathway can provide a place, subject to the conditions in that Olympic cycle’s official system. Do not assume that a host automatically receives a place or that the conditions used for one Games apply to another. Check the published LA28 system for its specific terms.

FIH Hockey Pro League
The Pro League is part of the LA28 pathway. The system’s eligibility and allocation provisions determine how this route awards places; participation in the league alone should not be treated as automatic Olympic qualification. This route was not part of the Paris 2024 pathway.
Continental championships
Continental competitions offer direct places, but the events and allocation rules vary by cycle. For LA28, use the official system’s named competitions and rules rather than assuming that the continental champions—or runners-up—qualify under the same arrangement used previously.

Olympic Qualification Tournaments
LA28 will have four Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The top two teams in each tournament qualify, provided they have not already secured a place through another route. These tournaments give teams that missed a direct place another opportunity to qualify.

How is a team place different from an athlete place?
These pathways qualify a team by awarding a place to its National Olympic Committee (NOC); they do not qualify individual athletes independently. The rules for how many athletes an NOC may enter are specified separately for each Games. For Paris 2024, the official system set a squad limit of 16 athletes per team; that historical limit should not be assumed to apply at LA28.

How did qualification work for Paris 2024?
Paris 2024 is a useful example of how the routes can differ by cycle. France received a host place in each gender after meeting the FIH condition of ranking 25th or better in the world rankings after the Tokyo Games. Five continental champions also earned places: the winners of the African Hockey Road to Paris, Pan American Games, Asian Games, EuroHockey Championship and Oceania Cup. Finally, two Olympic Qualification Tournaments awarded places to their top three finishers. The field was 12 teams per gender. A continental runner-up did not inherit the winner’s place
Under the Paris rules, if host France had also won the EuroHockey Championship, the runner-up would not have received that direct Olympic place. It would instead have been allocated through the Olympic Qualification Tournaments. That cycle-specific rule is why a continental runner-up should not be described as automatically qualifying.

Belgium qualified through a tournament
India qualified for Paris 2024 by winning the Asian championship. Belgium, which finished second at the EuroHockey Championship, later secured its place by finishing in the top three at the Valencia Olympic Qualifier.
