For lossy audio, a higher bitrate gives the encoder more data and can improve fidelity, but it also increases file size or streaming data use. It does not guarantee an audible improvement: codec, encoder settings, the audio itself, and listening conditions all matter. Lossless audio is different—its decoded data matches the original, so a larger lossless bitrate does not mean extra fidelity.
What bitrate tells you—and what it doesn’t
Bitrate is the amount of encoded data represented or delivered over time, commonly expressed in kilobits per second (kbit/s). For the same duration, a higher average bitrate generally produces a larger file and uses more data when streaming.
For lossy compression, the encoder works within a data budget and discards information it predicts will matter less to a listener. More bits can give it room to preserve more of the signal, but there is no single bitrate that guarantees a particular sound quality. As MDN’s audio codec guide puts it, “The higher the bit rate, the higher the quality can be.” The word “can” is important: bitrate permits quality; it does not guarantee it.
Bitrate is not interchangeable with sample rate or bit depth. They describe different aspects of digital audio and encoding, so raising one does not automatically change the others.

Why the same bitrate can sound different
Codec and encoder settings
Codecs use different algorithms to compress audio, and settings or encoder implementations can affect the result. Two files encoded at the same bitrate therefore need not sound equally faithful. Compare specific codecs and configurations rather than treating a bitrate label as a universal quality score. MDN’s codec guide describes how codec configuration affects output.
Source material
Some audio is harder to compress than other audio. Noise or hiss increases signal complexity, and content, frequency bandwidth, and stereo-coding choices can all affect how an encoder uses its data budget. A bitrate that works well for one recording may not preserve another equally well.

Listener and playback conditions
Lossy encoding removes information, but that does not mean every listener will notice the loss. A version may be transparent—indistinguishable from the source to a particular listener under particular conditions—without being bit-identical. Audibility depends on the content, listener, and playback setup. MDN explains that some high-quality lossy effects may be difficult or impossible for an average listener to discern in some situations; this is not a guarantee for every file or person. Audacity’s discussion of audio quality likewise emphasizes that transparency is contextual.
Lossy versus lossless: bitrate means something different
Lossy codecs reduce file size by discarding some information. Lossless codecs compress data without changing it on decoding: the decoded audio reproduces the original data. MDN states that decoding audio compressed with a lossless codec such as FLAC or ALAC yields a result identical to the original “down to the bit.” A higher bitrate for a lossless file reflects how much data that material and encoding require, not added fidelity beyond the source.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Choose lossless when exact reproduction, archiving, or editing flexibility matters. Keeping a lossless source is useful if you may later edit or create compressed versions, because repeatedly re-encoding lossy audio can compound artifacts. Choose lossy when storage or network bandwidth is constrained and the fidelity trade-off is acceptable. These use cases are described in MDN’s digital audio concepts guide.

Spotify says higher streaming quality uses more data and higher download quality uses more storage. Its automatic quality adjustment aims to avoid stuttering. Availability and listed options depend on platform and plan; check Spotify’s audio quality support page for the current settings. The table illustrates a service’s choices, not how a given bitrate will sound in another codec or encoder.

A larger file, higher bitrate label, or spectrogram alone cannot establish that one version sounds better to you. For a meaningful comparison, use the same source and identify the codec, encoder settings, bitrate mode, and playback setup. Match loudness so a level difference does not bias the result.

- With Scarlett 4th Gen, you have all you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
- Prepare the two versions from the same source and note their encoding settings.
- Match playback loudness and use the same equipment and listening conditions.
- Use a controlled comparison, such as an ABX test: listen to A and B, then decide whether a hidden sample X is A or B.
- Interpret the result narrowly. It indicates whether you could distinguish those files under those conditions; it does not predict what every listener will hear.
Audacity recommends controlled listening such as ABX testing for judging audibility. Codec comparisons also need matched conditions: the Opus comparison page summarizes tests with different content, sample rates, and bitrates, and warns against reading exact quality at a particular bitrate from its overview graph. There is no universal conversion such as “this many Opus kbit/s equals MP3 at 320 kbit/s.”
Choose a setting by purpose, not by the biggest number
- For streaming on a limited connection: a lower service setting uses less data; automatic quality adjustment may help avoid interruptions where the service offers it.
- For everyday listening: choose a lossy setting that sounds acceptable to you on your usual playback setup. A higher setting is worthwhile only if its audible benefit matters to you.
- For archiving or future editing: keep a lossless source when exact reproduction or flexibility is important.
- When comparing codecs: compare the actual files and conditions, not bitrate numbers alone.
A BBC Research & Development report, A subjective evaluation of high bitrate coding of music, found in its tested context that AAC encoders could preserve the original’s quality. That result supports the possibility of transparent lossy delivery in particular conditions; it does not establish that all AAC settings, recordings, or listeners will have the same outcome.
