In an ideal flyby, the craft leaves Earth with about the same speed relative to Earth that it had far away on approach, but traveling in a different direction. Since Earth is moving around the Sun, that turn can increase or decrease the spacecraft’s speed and energy relative to the Sun.
What happens to the spacecraft near Earth?
As the spacecraft approaches Earth, gravity accelerates it, so it reaches its highest Earth-relative speed near closest approach. As it moves away, gravity slows it. In the idealized two-body picture, the spacecraft’s far-field speed relative to Earth is approximately restored after the encounter; gravity has changed the direction of its velocity, not its magnitude. That equal-speed comparison applies far from Earth, before and after the encounter—not at closest approach, where the craft is moving faster. It is an idealization: actual mission trajectories involve other bodies and may include small propulsion corrections.
Why can its speed relative to the Sun change?
Earth is moving around the Sun. To find the spacecraft’s Sun-relative velocity, combine its velocity relative to Earth with Earth’s velocity around the Sun. The flyby turns the Earth-relative velocity vector; adding Earth’s unchanged orbital velocity to the newly directed vector can therefore produce a different Sun-relative velocity.

In vector terms, the incoming and outgoing Earth-relative velocities have approximately equal magnitudes but point in different directions. Their difference is the change in the spacecraft’s Sun-relative velocity. Depending on the flyby geometry, the craft may gain or lose heliocentric speed and orbital energy.
This is an exchange, not energy from nowhere. The spacecraft trades a tiny amount of orbital energy and angular momentum with Earth. Earth’s change is extremely small because it is so much more massive than the spacecraft, and the total energy of the system is conserved. NASA describes a gravity assist as picking up a tiny amount of a planet’s orbital momentum around the Sun in its New Horizons press kit.

What determines the size and direction of the change?
The flyby’s incoming velocity and approach geometry determine how sharply the spacecraft’s path bends and which direction it leaves in. Mission designers select the trajectory to achieve a desired speed, direction, or orbital-plane change. NASA’s New Horizons press kit identifies the spacecraft’s speed relative to the planet, closest-approach distance, and direction as factors in the change.
- Reference frame: Earth-relative speed and Sun-relative speed are different quantities. A statement that the craft “speeds up” needs to specify which one.
- Speed or direction: In the ideal Earth-relative model, far-field speed is approximately the same before and after the flyby, while direction changes. The Sun-relative speed can change.
- Approach geometry: Incoming velocity and closest-approach distance and direction affect the turn and the resulting trajectory.
How large can an Earth-flyby change be?
There is no standard boost: the result depends on the mission’s chosen geometry. For example, NASA said the September 2025 Earth gravity assist for OSIRIS-APEX was expected to change the spacecraft’s velocity in its orbit around the Sun by 15,660 miles per hour (7 kilometers per second) and alter its orbital plane by about 1.5 degrees. Earth assists can also change a spacecraft’s path without being described as a speed boost. NASA said the OSIRIS-REx Earth assist would move the spacecraft onto Bennu’s orbital plane. Principal investigator Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona, Tucson, described it as using “Earth’s own gravity instead of expending fuel.” See NASA’s OSIRIS-REx announcement.
