How Does a Photo-to-Lithophane Generator Turn Pictures Into 3D Prints?

A lithophane turns a photo into a physical relief that reveals its image when backlit. Here’s how to generate, print, and display one, including the differences between monochrome and layered colour methods.

A photo-to-lithophane generator turns a picture into a thin, textured 3D panel that reveals the image when light shines through it. The printer does not print a flat photograph: it prints thickness variations, with thinner areas appearing brighter and thicker areas darker. The result can look surprising because an ordinary 3D printer is making a grayscale image out of physical geometry. Learn how lithophanes encode images in thickness.

What a lithophane is—and why it needs light

A lithophane is a relief panel whose changing thickness represents the tones in an image. In a conventional version, the thinner parts let more light through and look bright; thicker parts block more light and look dark. Viewed without light behind it, the image may be difficult to read. Backlighting reveals the contrast.

That makes the display part of the image-making process. Hold the print against a window or mount it in front of an LED panel or light box. Even, white light is a useful starting point; warm or coloured light can change the appearance. The print is a physical image, not a photograph pasted onto a wall. The generator’s guide explains its backlighting options.

How to make a photo lithophane

  1. Choose a photo. Use a picture with a clear subject and useful tonal contrast. A generator may offer image adjustments and a preview, but not every photo will reproduce equally well. The generator guide describes its image controls.
  2. Choose the shape and size. Select a flat or shaped design and position the image. Check the preview and thickness options before exporting; the available controls vary by generator.
  3. Export a model. The cited workflow supports STL and print-ready 3MF. STL is a widely used geometry-exchange format; a 3MF can also include print setup information for compatible slicers. See the generator’s export workflow.
  4. Slice and print. Open the file in your slicer, inspect its orientation and settings, and prepare it for your printer. Treat generator recommendations as a starting point rather than universal settings: printer, filament, model, and slicer profiles can all affect the result.
  5. Light the finished panel from behind. Test it against a window or use an LED panel or light box. Adjust the position and light until the image reads clearly.

Monochrome or layered colour?

A classic lithophane uses the panel’s thickness to create a light-and-dark image, commonly in a light-coloured filament. A more involved method adds thin cyan, magenta, and yellow layers over a white lithophane base. In the described workflow, the white base provides the tonal image and the coloured layers tint transmitted light. It is a specific technique, not a universal recipe for colour lithophanes.

Approach How colour or tone is made Requirements and trade-offs
Monochrome Thickness variations create the image’s light and dark areas. A simpler backlit grayscale effect without a colour stack.
Layered CMY Thin cyan, magenta, and yellow layers tint light through a white tonal base. The cited method uses four filaments and requires more setup and calibration; it is not automatically better for every photo or printer.

Settings for the cited colour workflow

3D-Lithophane.com’s 2026 colour instructions recommend 0.1 mm layers and 100% infill, and suggest a 0.2 mm nozzle for finer colour detail while noting that a 0.4 mm nozzle can also work. These are recommendations for that workflow, not guaranteed settings for every machine or material. Check the colour workflow instructions.

The tool says it can export a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Creality Print, or PrusaSlicer, or a ZIP of individual filament STLs for other slicers. Its instructions say to set initial layer height to 0.1 mm because the generated 3MF does not set it; using 0.2 mm may distort the front colours. Confirm the values in your slicer’s current profile before printing, since software and profiles can change.

What you need to make and display one

  • A compatible FDM 3D printer: ELEGOO’s manufacturer guide describes lithophane printing with FDM. The available information does not establish a particular printer model as necessary or best. Read ELEGOO’s lithophane guide.
  • Light-coloured filament: ELEGOO identifies white or natural PLA as suitable material. Filament brands and formulations may transmit light and reproduce tones differently, so results are not guaranteed to match. See the material guidance.
  • A light source: A window can work, or use an LED panel or light box. These are display options, not prerequisites for making the model.
  • A slicer: Use software compatible with the exported file and your printer to check orientation and prepare the print.

Photo privacy: what the generator says

The flat-generator page says the browser converts the photo into a grid of height values and sends those values to build the model, while the photo itself is not saved. That is the operator’s description of its own processing, not an independent security assessment. Review the live page’s privacy information before uploading an image, particularly if it is sensitive. Read the generator’s current page.
