A Fitbit can track and display some information when your phone is not nearby, but it is not completely phone-free: current setup and app-based syncing require a compatible phone, and GPS behavior depends on the model. Selected devices have built-in GPS; others rely on a connected phone.
What works when your phone is away?
Your Fitbit can record and show some activity information on its own screen. The precise stats and controls depend on the model. For example, Google says Versa users can view stats on the watch itself; phone calls, texts, calendar alerts, and app notifications are phone-linked features. Google’s Versa getting-started guide describes the watch’s on-device and connected features.

That makes a Fitbit useful for tracking activity without carrying a phone, but it does not mean every feature works independently. You need a compatible phone for current setup, and app-based syncing uses the Fitbit app.
Can you set up a Fitbit without a phone?
Google’s current setup instructions require the Fitbit app on a compatible iPhone or Android phone. The stated minimums are iOS 16.4 or later and Android 11 or later; new users also need a Google Account. The official setup guidance does not establish a computer-only setup method. Google’s Fitbit setup requirements provide the current requirements.

If setup fails, complete it through the Fitbit app rather than trying to pair the tracker from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says setup should be completed through the app: Fitbit setup troubleshooting.
What happens to syncing and your data?
Syncing connects the Fitbit with the app, where account-linked information can be accessed. Current setup and app-based syncing therefore still depend on a compatible phone. Google’s account guidance says existing Fitbit-account users could continue using that account until February 2, 2026; after that date, a Google Account is required to log in. Google’s reviewed support guidance does not establish a dependable, cross-model period for retaining unsynced data. Don’t assume a particular number of days; sync periodically when you can.

It depends on whether your model has built-in GPS or uses phone-connected GPS. A device with built-in GPS can record a route without relying on the phone’s GPS. Google lists Charge 5 and Charge 6 as examples of models with built-in GPS. Google’s GPS guide identifies the GPS type for supported devices.

Devices that use phone-connected GPS need the phone for that GPS function. Google’s examples include Inspire 3 and Luxe. For connected GPS, the device must be able to sync with the Google Health app, and the app needs location permission on the phone. A Fitbit using built-in GPS still needs a phone for setup and app-based syncing.

No. Wi-Fi is available only on selected Fitbit watches, and Google says it is unavailable on Sense 2, Versa Lite Edition, and Versa 4. Supported networks also have limitations: public Wi-Fi that requires a browser login or captive portal is not supported. Wi-Fi availability on a particular watch does not remove the current phone requirement for setup and app-based syncing.

What to check before relying on a Fitbit away from your phone
- For activity tracking: Check which stats your specific model displays on-device.
- For route recording: Confirm whether your model has built-in GPS or phone-connected GPS.
- For notifications: Treat calls, texts, calendar alerts, and app notifications as phone-linked features.
- For setup and syncing: Have access to a compatible iPhone or Android phone with the Fitbit app.
- For charging: Match the cable to the exact model. Google says Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe share a charging cable; other models have their own arrangements. See Google’s Fitbit charging guide.
