Selecting multiple clips in Vegas Pro is mostly about using the right selection gesture and understanding what the timeline is actually selecting (events) versus what the media bins are selecting.
This guide walks through every dependable way to select multiple clips on the Vegas Pro timeline, with keyboard shortcuts, exact mouse actions, and fixes when the behavior doesn’t match what you expect.

Works across common recent versions like Vegas Pro 19 and Vegas Pro 20, and the core selection logic is consistent across them.
What Vegas Pro means by selecting clips (events)
On the timeline, Vegas Pro treats each placed item as an event. When you “select clips,” you’re selecting those events so you can move them, ripple them, cut them, apply effects, or copy/paste.
#1 Best Overall
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
Two things can confuse new users:
- Selection vs. focus: A clip can be selected, and a different clip can have the editing focus.
- Timeline type: Selection on the timeline (events) behaves differently from selection in Project Media (media assets).
Keyboard shortcuts you’ll use constantly
These are the shortcuts that cover the majority of “select multiple” workflows.
| Action | Windows shortcut |
|---|---|
| Add/select additional events (range) | Shift + Click |
| Add/remove events (non-contiguous) | Ctrl + Click |
| Select everything | Ctrl + A (depending on context) |
| Copy | Ctrl + C |
| Cut | Ctrl + X |
| Paste | Ctrl + V |
| Delete | Delete or Backspace |
Shortcut labels can vary slightly if you changed Vegas key bindings, so if something feels “off,” verify key commands in your installed version’s preferences.
Method 1: Select a single clip
Start simple: click an event (video or audio) on the timeline. The clip highlights to show it’s selected.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Method 2: Add more clips with Shift (contiguous range)
Use Shift when you want everything between two points. This is ideal when multiple events are adjacent on the timeline (or you want a clean “range select”).
- Click the first clip you want included.
- Hold Shift.
- Click the last clip in the range.
Vegas selects all events in that range according to the timeline ordering. If your events aren’t truly contiguous in time on the tracks you care about, you may end up selecting more (or less) than you intended—switch to Ctrl selection (non-contiguous) if you need precise picks.
Method 3: Add/remove clips with Ctrl (non-contiguous selection)
Use Ctrl when you need to select multiple clips that aren’t next to each other.

- Click one clip to select it.
- Hold Ctrl.
- Click additional clips to add them to the selection.
- To remove a clip from the selection, hold Ctrl and click the selected clip again.
This is the fastest method for picking an odd set of clips scattered across time or across different tracks.
Method 4: Drag a selection marquee (box select)
Vegas Pro supports box selection: draw a rectangle over multiple events to select them in one pass.
- Click and hold the mouse on an empty area of the timeline (not directly on a clip).
- Drag a rectangle that covers the clips you want.
- Release the mouse button.
If the box select isn’t catching everything, try slightly expanding the rectangle so it fully overlaps each event block.
Method 5: Select all clips on the timeline
If you need to move/copy/remove the entire edit, select all events on the timeline.

- Click anywhere in the timeline so it has focus.
- Press Ctrl + A.
Be careful: in some contexts, Ctrl + A can affect other panels (like Project Media). If you press it and selection seems wrong, click the timeline and try again.
Method 6: Select all clips within a time range
This method is best when clips are spread across tracks but share a common time window.
- Set the timeline cursor (playhead) where you want to start.
- Create a time selection by dragging on the timeline ruler (or using the transport controls, depending on your setup) to define a start and end.
- Use the selection command that selects events in the current time selection (commonly found via menu or by using the selection tools tied to time ranges in your version).
Because Vegas Pro’s exact menu wording can differ by version and key bindings, treat this as the workflow: define a time range first, then select events constrained to that range. If you can’t find the command quickly, search your version’s menus for terms like Select, Time Selection, or Events in Time Selection.

Method 7: Select clips across multiple tracks without losing your mind
Multi-track selection is usually straightforward, but the “gotcha” is that you may accidentally activate a tool mode that changes how clicks behave (for example, trimming versus selecting).
Try this reliable approach when you need multiple clips across tracks:
- Switch to the default selection mode (often the standard Arrow/Select tool, depending on your toolbar).
- Box select: drag a marquee rectangle covering all the relevant tracks and time span.
- If you need to exclude a few clips inside the box, start over with a smaller marquee and use Ctrl to add only what you want.
If Vegas won’t let you select clips on a track, check track controls (like mute/lock) and ensure the track isn’t locked against editing or selection.
Method 8: Use the Project Media / timeline sync carefully
Sometimes people click items in the media bin (Project Media) and expect them to behave like timeline clips. They’re different objects.
- Project Media selection is for assets (files, takes, generated media).
- Timeline event selection is for placed clips you can edit, move, and apply timeline operations to.
When your goal is “select multiple clips I already placed,” click directly on the timeline events—not the media list.
Common problems and troubleshooting
Problem: Ctrl + Click selects the wrong thing or won’t add clips
Fix: Make sure your cursor is over the timeline event block, not on a gap, automation lane, or an area outside the event. Also confirm you’re not in a trim tool or another special editing mode.
Try: Click one clip, then press Ctrl + Click on a clearly separate event block.

Problem: Shift + Click selects too many clips
Shift selection is range-based. If your events overlap time in complex ways, the “between” interpretation can feel surprising.
Fix: Use Ctrl selection for precision. Box select is also safer when you can visually confirm the selection area.
Problem: Box select doesn’t work
Fix: Start the drag from a truly empty area of the timeline (background), then drag over the events. If you start the drag on top of an event, Vegas may interpret the action as a move/trim instead of selection.
Try: Zoom in on the timeline and attempt selection again with a larger rectangle.
Problem: Nothing highlights when you click
This usually means track lock/edit protection or an unexpected input mode.
- Check for locked tracks or protected tracks.
- Confirm the timeline has focus (click the timeline first).
- Try switching to the standard selection tool.
Problem: Ctrl + A selects the wrong panel
Fix: Click the timeline panel so it’s the active target, then press Ctrl + A again.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Problem: Effects or operations apply to only one clip
Even if multiple events are highlighted, some operations depend on selection type and track compatibility (for example, certain edits might apply to a single “active” event).

FAQs
Does Vegas Pro let me select multiple clips on the same track?
Yes. Use Shift + Click for a range or Ctrl + Click for non-contiguous events. Box selection also works across multiple events on the same track.
Can I select multiple clips and ripple-move them together?
Usually, yes—if all selected events are valid for the operation you’re performing. If ripple behavior doesn’t match expectations, verify you’re using the correct editing/move mode and that the clips are on unlocked tracks.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does my click turn into a trim cursor instead of selection?
That happens when you’re near event edges/handles or when a trimming tool is active. Move your cursor to the middle of an event block and/or switch back to the standard selection tool.
Will box selection select both video and audio events?
It can. If your marquee covers both event types across the timeline area, Vegas will select any events intersecting your box.
I selected multiple clips but copy/paste only duplicates one. What’s wrong?
Most often, not all intended events are actually selected (or the selection is partially blocked by track settings). Re-check the highlighted events and try a quick copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) to confirm the selection is recognized.
Bottom Line
If you remember just three gestures, you’ll be fast: Shift + Click for contiguous ranges, Ctrl + Click for non-contiguous picks, and marquee box selection for multi-track bursts. Everything else is a variation on those rules.
