A PDF can contain links that technically resolve but still send readers to the wrong date or section. In a case study published by DesignClarity, an independent QA pass reopened a generated planner, checked all 8,556 internal link annotations, and reported zero broken links in the final build. The same workflow had caught hundreds of misdirected links during development after page insertions shifted raw page-number destinations.
What did the PDF link test check?
DesignClarity describes generating a two-year digital planner in Python, then reopening the finished PDF with pypdf for a separate verification pass. The final planner had 871 pages, including 730 daily pages. The author reports that the QA pass checked the exact page count and all 8,556 internal link annotations, with zero broken links in the final build.

The checks went beyond whether a destination existed. The script extracted text from selected destination pages to confirm that a calendar link landed on the expected date page. It also checked the week-to-week chain across all 105 weeks, including the transition from December to January, and scanned the static PDF for JavaScript, external URI actions, and network calls. The author reports a file size of 2.5 MB and 5,226 tab links from six recurring tabs across the 871 pages.

These are results reported by the author for one planner, not an independent reproduction or a general performance benchmark. They describe what that particular automated pass checked; they do not establish that every navigation behavior or PDF viewer will work correctly.

What failure did the QA process catch?
During development, the author says that inserting pages after links had been assigned caused hundreds of links to point to the wrong places. Those links relied on raw page numbers. When the document’s layout changed, a destination’s page index changed too, while the stored link still pointed to the old index.
The final implementation used named destinations instead. Rather than target a page by its position in the file, a link could refer to a stable label associated with a date or section. This makes links less vulnerable to page insertions and moves, though it does not remove the need to verify the built PDF.

How to check a hyperlinked PDF reliably
- Build the PDF, then reopen the output. Run validation against the saved file rather than assuming that the document-generation code produced a correct result.
- Check every link annotation where practical. Confirm that each internal link resolves to a valid destination; sampling may miss isolated failures in a large file.
- Test meaning as well as resolution. For destinations with predictable content, extract destination-page text and compare it with the expected date, section, or label.
- Check navigation sequences. Validate ordered chains, such as week-to-week links, across boundaries where labels or numbering change.
- Inspect for unintended active content. Scan the static file for JavaScript, external URI actions, and network calls if the document is meant to remain offline.
- Test in the intended viewer. Open the PDF in the apps and devices readers will use, then verify that links are visible and activate as expected.
DesignClarity’s account illustrates why these checks answer different questions: a link can resolve structurally yet point to the wrong date, and a PDF that passes file-level checks may still behave differently in a particular app.
What the automated result does not prove
The author says testing in mobile annotation apps such as GoodNotes and Notability was still pending. The reported automated pass therefore does not establish compatibility with those apps or with every PDF viewer. It also cannot be treated as proof of all possible rendering, tapping, or navigation behavior beyond the checks described.
