Hide the start-date series so only the task-duration bars remain visible, and reverse the task axis if the first task appears at the bottom. Excel has no dedicated Gantt chart type; this method creates the familiar schedule view from a standard chart.
What you need before creating the chart
Set up one task per row in a continuous table with three columns:

- Task: the task name that will appear beside its bar.
- Start: a real Excel date for when the task begins.
- Duration: the task length as a number of days.
Keep the start dates and durations in separate columns. The start series positions each task along the timeline; the duration series determines the length of its visible bar. Microsoft’s Gantt chart instructions use this stacked-bar approach and cover Excel for Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 for Mac, Excel 2024 and 2024 for Mac, Excel 2021 and 2021 for Mac, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. Ribbon labels can vary slightly by version and platform.
Build the Gantt chart from a blank worksheet
- Enter the schedule data. Put task names, start dates, and durations in adjacent columns, with one task per row. Make sure Start cells are recognized as dates and Duration cells contain numeric day counts.
- Select the data range. Include the task names and both numeric columns, including their headers if present.
- Insert the chart. Choose Insert > Recommended Charts > Stacked Bar. Excel creates a stacked bar chart with each task represented as a category.
- Hide the start-date series. Select the first data series—the portion representing each task’s start—and choose Shape Fill > No Fill in the chart formatting controls. The start series remains in place to offset the duration bar, but its color disappears.
- Put the first task at the top if needed. Select the vertical task axis, open Format Axis, then set Axis position > Categories in reverse order. This changes the display order when Excel shows the first task at the bottom.
- Make the schedule readable. Add a descriptive chart title, format the date axis so the timeline is understandable, and remove the legend if it does not help explain the chart. Microsoft’s chart guidance covers titles, axes, series formatting, and saving chart templates.
- Check the result. Confirm that each bar begins on the intended date, spans the intended number of days, and is beside the correct task name.
Why a stacked bar chart works
A bar chart places categories vertically and values horizontally, an orientation suited to task labels and timeline values. In this setup, each task is a category. Excel stacks its start-date value first and its duration second. The invisible start segment pushes the visible duration segment to the correct position on the calendar; reversing the task categories changes which task is shown at the top. See Microsoft’s overview of available chart types for its description of bar-chart orientation and use with long labels.

Fix common Gantt chart problems
- Each bar has two visible colors or segments: select the start-date series and set its fill to No Fill.
- Tasks run in the wrong order: select the vertical task axis and enable Categories in reverse order in Format Axis.
- Bars do not line up with the intended calendar: check that Start contains actual date values, Duration contains the intended numeric day counts, and the chart uses the start and duration series in that order.
- Long task names are difficult to read: retain the horizontal bar layout and increase chart size or adjust the label formatting. Microsoft notes that bar charts can be useful when category labels are long.
- The legend is confusing or redundant: remove it if the chart communicates only task names and timing, or make sure the underlying series are clearly labeled.
Build a chart manually or start with a template?
Building the chart yourself gives you direct control over the task, start-date, and duration data and lets you learn how the chart is assembled. If you prefer a ready-made workbook, Microsoft also points to free Gantt chart templates. Check a template’s fields and formulas against your schedule before relying on it; template structure and compatibility can differ.
If you will reuse a customized chart, Microsoft documents saving it as a chart template (.crtx), which retains chart formatting and colors. Follow the applicable instructions in Microsoft’s chart creation and formatting guide.
